  Motorola V188 cell phone

This was a replacement purchase for the same cell phone I already had. This is one of the best that Motorola has in my opinion. It is simple to use. It doesn't have all of the frills that a lot of today's cell phones have, but if you just need a basic cell phone that isn't difficult to understand, this is the cell phone to buy!!!

It's new and all I had to do is put my SIM card in and it's ready to use. It is identical to the one I had that got ran over. And it was soooooo much cheaper than getting another one at T-Mobile.

I bought this phone to use in europe with a french sim card and it worked perfectly. I needed a simple phone that was small in size but had enough features to keep me in contact with the usa. so, for a small price I gat a very good phone and with the purchase of the sim card was able to stay in contact with my busines and family at a very reasonable price. I would recoommend this phone especially if traveling to europe.

  Motorola V188 Met My Expectations
Review created: 06/03/08
by:

I bought an unlocked Motorola V188 because I was taking a trip to Europe and needed a quad band GSM phone. The Motorola V188's compact size and and clamshell case were perfect for slipping it into a pocket. I purchased a SIM card in Germany, popped it in the V188 and was ready to go. The built in calculator, currency converter and alarm clock came in handy as well as the text messaging capabilities. I didn't need or want alot of extra features, which kept the cost down. Battery life was not great, but the charger was a 110/220 Volt so I could use it in Europe with just an adapter to fit it into European outlets. It turned out to be the perfect phone for a bargain price for me.

Motorola V188 Phone is an Excellent Buy
Review created: 05/24/08

My wife was havinf trouble with her Motorola V188 Cell Phone. It was about two years old and had been a good phone till recently. We went to Ebay, searched for and purchased this like new Motorola V188. It is great. The phone itself looked like it was new, straight out of the box, actually better than described in the advertising. Thank you for a great transaction and product.

Motorola V188 - Good Global Phone
Review created: 05/17/08

The Quad Band feature means that you can use it almost anywhere in the world. The unlocked means that you can use it on any network. The 110-220V means that you can charge it in Europe or the USA.

It is a little large by today's standards, but not too bad.

great phone for use outside the USA
Review created: 05/13/08

Very inexpensive travel phone!

As soon as I received it I took it to Ireland, where I bought a 10 euro sim card with 10 euros of time on it. That took care of all my calls for my 10 day trip.

Now my sister is taking it to China. Much less expensive than buying a phone overseas or roaming overseas with my USA phone.

Would like to have had the charger
Review created: 05/11/08

I was surprised when my cellphone arrived without the charger. I emailed the seller to ask for the charger and never heard anything. I, perhaps wrongly, assumed that I would get at least the basic equipment to charge the phone as I have with the other four cellphones I have purchased on Ebay over the past three years. The phone was fine in spite of the Rap Ringtone.

This is a great, simple phone. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer models, but it's perfect for someone that just wants a phone, a phone book, and a few extras. The only drawback I've found is the screen lighting isn't as bright as I would expect, so when I dial I sometimes have to look closely to see the number I've entered. I'm very satisfied with this phone.

  Motorola disappointed
Review created: 03/02/08

My wife had a model V188 Motorola phone. It was a flip phone, and one of the ears broke holding the phone together. I ordered a new one from an e-bay supplier. The phone I recieved was brand new, but when I tried to use it, the new one did not work. I should say, it worked perfectly, except no one could be heard when they talked on the phone. It was like the microphone inside the telephone was not there. The supplier has said they'd credit the sale. Dave in Orlando

I bought this for two reasons. 1. I left my old phone in my pocket while laundering. 2. Everyone in the NFL wears Motorola headsets.
The screen is a bit small, and the numbers are also on the small side. The battery life is good. I love the flashing blue antenna.
I really like this better than my old Nokia.

  Motorola V188
Review created: 02/16/08

I'm a guy who just wants a simple phone for daily work, business, and home that has some basic features (requirements for me):

1. Battery life - This phone's standard 860mA hr. Lithium holds enough power to leave it on 24/7 and only charge once per week when calls are minimal. On heavier call weeks I get several days before charging. I had to borrow a phone while mine was in service (explained later) and it happened to be one of these "fancy" units with camera, MP3, etc. I quickly learned after having to charge the dumb thing every day no matter what, I really missed my V188 - not to mention other irritations with gadget laiden phones.

2. Ease of use - The V188 was not as simple as I would have prefered, but after spending some time with it I got familiar and now I like it (a gadget savy friend even put a custom ring tone in for me)

3. Phone book - easy access, single "down arrow" push and you're in the phone book. Push a letter and jump to alphabetically placed entry. Entering numbers and information is slow with the keypad.

4. Speaker Option - This phone has a pretty decent speaker phone option. I've had conference calls with this little thing in the middle of the table and it did a good job with the volume and the microphone is sensitive enough for the party on the other end to hear adequately.

5. Standard 3-conductor 2.5mm accy socket for headset. I use Etymotic Research's EtyCom and it comes with the 2.5mm plug. I don't like using adapters and such so I want it to fit my phone directly. The V188 is one of the few that is simple (enough) and came with the right jack for my EtyCom headset. The combination works flawlessly.

6. Reliability, reception - This phone gets much better reception inside buildings than most other phones I have observed. It doesn't matter if they are $400 or $700 phones, the V188 clearly is one of the top for signal strength (I use T-Mobile, and maybe that has an effect, not sure).

Problems:

I am not sure what is causing this problem but the only way I can explain it is the phone "locks up" occasionally and the only way to get it going again is to pull the battery and re-start. The problem started after about 8-10 months of use. It may be related to the SIMM card because I did have another Motorola phone lock up as well. Since I could not find these phones new anymore, I bought a used one from Ebay and It locked up as well. I tried a trick thinking the SIMM loses connection momentarily and the phone gets lost. The trick is adding 2 layers of regular scotch tape on the top side of the SIMM card itself so that when it's slipped in the socket, it fits tighter. It does seem to be working so far (1 week) It would typically lock up on a daily basis.

In conclusion, while this phone is not the "latest gadget", I think it was one of Mot's better units. I'm really bummed that technology and designs won't sit still for more than 6 months! I will have to buy a drawer full of used V188's to keep as back-ups!

good phone for trip to Italy

I bought this phone used to use during a trip to Italy, and it worked well. Bought a SIM card on arrival, which I inserted, and I updated minutes as needed. Telephone worked fine. A good, inexpensive, solution for communication in Italy. SMS was hard to use, however.

An unexpensive option for a backup phone.
Review created: 11/20/07

Good things are: Inexpensive phone, small, dual screen, good ringtones.

Bad things: I find it too delicate and in couple of cases some parts will stop working, like keyboard, or the flex cable that conects the screen.

there is nothing i really care for on this phone. i had a similar one, but this one was nothing like it. a very cheap phone, not many options at all. does not close all of the way so the phone stays on unless you hit the red button. would never recommend this phone to anyone. this is what i get for buying online i guess, have learned my lesson. have gone out and bought another phone after 2 weeks of using this one.

It's a lightweight phone that serves the purpose. It's a little confusing to work, but do-able. The instruction book did not match the index, so it makes it even more difficult to navigate the functions.

I like the speaker phone even though it's not extremely clear.

The cell phone was cheaply made and had a charger configured for Europe. It stopped working in less than a week and then was out of stock when returned. Money was refunded promptly. I did not buy this model again anywhere else.

  My "new" Motorola phone
Review created: 09/06/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I baught this phone because I had bid on and won one just like it that was purple, unfortunately, I was then informed that the purple was "held up in customs". This one was the same phone, from a different seller, but black. And listed as "new, never opened".
I paid the same price and sacrificed my passion for purple because I was desperate, as my phone had recently died.
Unfortunately for me, my "new" phone came, in a bubble envelope, with a car cahrger. No box, no directions, no extras that normally come with a "never opened" phone. Also, it has little "bite" marks on it, like someones small dog chewed it!
By the time I purchased a cover, (purple, of course) and the needed accessories,I could have gone anywhere to get the phone.
The phone it's self gets great recetion. I use it for my business, so I like that it has speaker phone. I ususally prefer a bar style phone, but I have learned to like this one.

Not the same as my old V188
Review created: 09/04/07

I bought this phone to replace a lost Motorola V188. This new phone was a big disappointment. It didn't work as well as my old V188. It dropped calls all the time. In less then a month it has started to fall apart. The back won't stay on. Now the antenna has fallen out and won't screw back in. I suspect this phone is a clone and not a real V188. Either that or Motorola doesn't make them like they used to. This is a terrible phone and I don't recommend it.
