  Very nice unit-fast and reliable

I bought this unit for a good price on black friday. Have I knew how good it is, I would have not invested in a PDA and a bluetooth GPS antenna. It pick up way faster than the PDA and it's screen has anti glare. The unit is solid, no rattling pieces or weak points. The side buttons and top and bottom are covered in tough rubbery material. The display is sunk in so it makes it a bit protected. I bought it for my brother, but I ended up keeping it for myself. I was a bit unhappy that it does not come with Canadian maps but I found them for free online and a lot of other links to customize that little piece of magic. Here are some links from GPS passion, of course it is at your own risk since you are modifying the original software:
*Adding a map of Canada - download from the official MyGuide website (http://www.my-guide.de/foto/download/Canada.fbl). They also have Alaska and Hawaii.
*Adding POIs (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=69673&whichpage=5#438281)
*Adding a female voice for prompts (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=69673&whichpage=5#438281)
*MioMap v3.2 "Skin Exchange" (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=70131)
*"Customizing" (accessing the WinCE shell, Videos, ActiveSync, see details) your Mio C310x (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=61233)
While I am stil working on my MIO, more online search gets more ways to customize it.
EDIT:SOME PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ARE ACTUALLY REVIEWING THE C310 WHICH WAS REPLACED BY THE C310X, SO JUST MAKE SURE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME THING.

Good For Some... Terrible For Others

This is actually for the C310x which is the upgrade to the C310.
So I actually only spent $150 on those Black Friday sales spectacular. Had I paid full price, I would have returned it for sure and stuck with a big brand like Magellan, TomTom, or Garmin. Let me tell you why.

This thing is $400. Now in the competing price range, you get a very good Magellan or Garmin or TomTom. Not quite top of the line but pretty good stuff all the same. For this review, I'm comparing it to the Magellan 760.

Let's start with what it does well:
1) Finds where you are located quickly. Much more quickly than the Magellan 760.
2) Cute small screen and touch screen.
3) Powerful suction cup.
4) Long battery life.... heck the fact it has a battery is good.
5) Lots of setup you can do. You can configure everything even down to the touch screen keyboard to be language independant. You can even set up speed cameras and warms you when you are close.
6) Plays MP3

Here is what it does poorly:
1)Suction cup bracket is HUGE. You must mount it low since it takes up so much realestate.
2) Screen brightness is not sensor controlled but time controlled. So driving through a tunnel it's full brightness.
3) MP3 player. Come on. It's a nav unit not an audio player.
4) No street pronounciation. It just says turn left turn right not what the street is. I love that feature in the Magellan.
5) Screen is sometimes slow to catch up to what the car is actually doing. It tells me to turn right and after I did, it takes 3 seconds before the arrow turns and catchs up to me.
6) Control for everything. Seriously I don't need so many controls. I don't need 4 different map colors and the fact that even when I picked US English I can change the keyboard to be some weird layout.
7) Only 1 voice. You can't change between a male or female for the same country. You get one or the other.
8) The manual is crap. There's so many configurations and menus that it's confusing.
9) My main feature is favorites. Where are my favorite locations. In the MIO, you can only store 2. Everything else is a Point of Interest which in certain mode allows you to add addresses to that POI... if you can figure it out. It took me 2 reads of the manual to figure it out.
10) 2 volume controls? Pushing a button has a configurable volume while voice navigation is a + or - volume button. Why?
11) The routing software isn't as smart. I was trying to bypass known traffic areas in my neighborhood. The Magellan always directs me to the main road. When I don't, it recalculates and shows my the short cut that I always take. The Mio didn't. It kept telling me to turn back to the main road. The two roads run parallel for 6 long blocks and the Mio kept telling me to turn back to the main road 6 times. Also on the main road there's no left turn... ever. The Magellan knows and handles this by passing the block and making 3 consecutive right turns which is the same as making a left. The Mio? Heck no. It tells me to turn left!

Overall it's a good attempt but like the BMW M6, you shouldn't need to have the capability to configure everything before you start using it. You should be able to hit the "M" button and have everything set to sport mode. Everything should be straight forward and user friendly. It's like an engineer got a hold of this product and started adding capability to change things that quite frankly doesn't matter. For $400 I'd get something else. Since I got it for $150, I can't complain

I've used this mio 310x gps for over a 1 1/2 years now and I love it very much. It did take some getting used to really master this, but I consider myself a pro at it now. I've seen other gps' in action and once you familiarize yourself with one its hard to switch. I used it daily as I was a contractor that went from job to job all throughout the day, and this really came in handy. The new updates they have avaiable are well worth the money, but I did have a couple problems with the installation of the update, that I had to do some digging on search sites to find the right info to help me. Like all gps, please make sure you hide them when not in use or take them right out of your car, cause mine did get stolen recently and having to come on ebay to find and spend more money on a gps isn't a fun idea to me.

I brought a mio c30x navigator from Ebay. I'm happy with the purchase. the reason I decided to shop on Ebay is because Frys electronic discontinue selling it. Also on Ebay I could win it with a lower price that other stores are selling for.

  Good little device

I didn't get it for my car, I got it for cycling and when I travel for business. I do a lot of distance biking, often to roads less traveled. It keeps me on track, plus having the MP3 player is an added bonus. For business, I navigate new cities like a pro. I don't leave home without it.
It's easy enough to update, not that I've had to do it since I first powered it up.
It's a simple, easy to use GPS. When you see it on sale for under $200, buy it. You can't go wrong.

  Mio C310x GPS
Review created: 05/20/07
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Bought this during the Winter holiday sale of 2006 for $199 at Staples.

The Good news...
- Low price
- The pre-loaded maps are generally clear and easy to read.
- Display is bright and clear.
- It's relatively simple to operate.
- Turn on automatic night mode and the unit will display in blue at night and bright light for daylight.

Now the BAD news...

1. The maps are OUTDATED!! The GPS operating software is dated 2006 BUT the MAP software is dated 2005!!

2. MioTech tech support STINKS!! They don't answer email directly! Owners MUST register at Mio-tech.com and log on to ask questions which are usually answered in a "generally" manner within 2-3 days.

3. MioTech REFUSES to post any news on When the "new" map software updates will be available. TeleAtlas also REFUSES to answer anything except to contact MioTech!

4. Only a Male voice is available in US English!

5. No text to speech for streets but that's fine since the voice and display will tell the driver when next to turn or distance left to travel.

6. Battery life STINKS! Battery charge is about 2 hours so keep the unit be plugged in at all times! Unit MUST be sent back to MioTech to have battery replaced, which is subject to a replacement fee!!

7. Suction cup adaptor works except during cold weather (i.e. winter when the windshield glass is frozen oven). Lick a finger and apply it to suction cup to make it work!

8. Hard to use the "search" feature to find addresses/POI's.
- Since the GPS system used is from TeleAtlas, the search begins with street number first then street name then town then state. This is the EUROPEAN method as TeleAtlas is a EUROPEAN Company!
- Since the unit is sold and used in the US, the GPS software SHOULD use the AMERICAN method: ZIP code FIRST, then street number and street name! MUCH easier for North Americans!!

9. TeleAtlas EUROPREAN mapping software is used. Prefer Navteq which is an AMERICAN-based map software! Still own Garmin StreetPilot III with mapping software that's Updated at least ANNUALLY!!
- TeleAtlas has a BAD reputation for NOT updating maps OUTSIDE of Europe (It's a EUROPEAN company so NO incentive/desire is present)! Online info from various online forums and news sources state that EUROPEAN maps are Already Updated by TeleAtlas for 2007!! How biased is that?!
- Unfortunately for N. Americans, US based GPS companies DO use TeleAtlas maps so those GPS owners MUST WAIT for the GPS companies to get Updated map info from TeleAtlas and make it available for the GPS owners!
-- TeleAtlas maps are nicely detailed BUT ONLY IF it's UPDATED!!!

10. Time format is based on 24-hour setting only; 12-hour setting is NOT available (even though this is format used in North America)!!

After using this unit over the past few months, found MANY gaps in the map software of destinations that do NOT appear on the maps but actually DO exist! Obviously, this is due to the Outdated maps!

My first reaction when I bought the unit was "WOW!" but now .... I was probably Ripped-Off with a device that's ALMOST useless!!
- Many streets and places have changed in the New England area especially in the Big Dig state!!
- Many shopping centers that's been in existence for over 10 years are missing from the maps!

Buy a "brand name" GPS unit from either such brands like TomTom or Garmin! At least those units UPDATE their map software, generally on an Annual basis!

Note: C310x updates the C310.

My wife is from Mexico and does not know her way around the city very well. I purchased the Mio (which also speaks spanish) and she zipps around like she lived here her whole life. I recommend this little machine for personal or family. What a great addition to our household! Get one if you can. THe price was also reasonable with E/Bay!

I have owned this GPS for quite sometime now. I have completely hacked it and I am using it to its fullest extent. Even just for a GPS I personally think that it is a great buy for its price. Can't wait for the updates to come out in April 2007...

  Mitac Mio™ C310 GPS Receiver

I had never heard of the Mio brand, but I am glad that I bought the C310x GPS unit!! It is wonderful! the size if the unit is perfect, and it is pretty easy to operate. I wish there was and "Hard Copy" of the user guide, instead of having to use the CDROM, however, once you figure out the settings (really not that hare), the unit is great, and work extremely well. Just as good as my friends $500.00 Tom Tom, and she even commented that she likes the size better than the Tom Tom!!!For the money, this can't be beat!!

I were using the receiver to go to New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania with excellent results. My girlfriend is taking advantage of it and told me that she really like it too. Is easy to use and allways got the right place. And it is small to carry on if you do not want to leave it in the car.
I really recomend to buy and enjoy it.

  Awesome little unit!
Review created: 01/08/07

4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

PROS

(1) Quickly acquires GPS signal.
(2) Signal is not lost in downtown areas with tall buildings, in the mountains, etc.
(3) Good maps with accurate directions.
(4) There is a basic paper manual included, and the manuals on the included DVD are easy to read and accurate.
(5) The system has a neat, easy to use MP3 player.
(6) You can listen to music on the MP3 player AND navigate at the same time. The music will stop when a voice direction is given; after the direction is given, the music plays again.
(7) The unit can be used while walking, biking or riding a motorcycle. Further, there is an earphone jack to listen to directions when cruising on the motorcycle.
(8) Bright, easy-to-follow screen with night and day functions that switch automatically.
(9) Millions and millions of Points of Interest (POIs), including an individual listing of every Tim Horton's coffee shop near and far (a real plus for Canadians!!).
(10) If you turn the unit off during your trip (ie. if you stop for supper or for a night in a hotel), the unit maintains your navigation schedule; when you turn it back on, you don't need to re-enter your destination points, etc.
(11) 2-D and 3-D maps.
(12) Tech support was decent to deal with; advised that map updates will be available in April 2007.
(13) Sharp-looking unit.
(14) Comes with USB plug so that you can directly connect the unit to your computer for updates.
(15) There are North American websites and support for the unit, which wasn't available on the other unit.
(16) I have to attend several addresses, all over the city, every day with my job. I just enter the addresses in the unit (with one destination and several "via points") and the GPS does the rest... I just spend the day following the directions of the unit from address to address. I can also enter new "via points", such a nearby coffee shop, gas station, etc. during my trip.
(17) This unit will advise of your speed and let you know if you are over the speed limit (if you want this feature activated). You can also add areas with stop-light cameras, photo-radar cameras, etc; the system will warn you when approaching these areas in order to remind you to be "extra dilligent".
(18) THE PRICE! I picked this up for $229 Canadian!

CONS:

(1) Only available in white.
(2) There is no included adaptor to plug it into the wall.
(3) The maps really need to be updated in fast-growing cities.
(4) A stylus would be nice if you have bigger hands/fingers; no stylus included.
(5) There is no included SD card.
(6) English voiced directions are all male.
(7) If you're looking at paying $450-$500 for the unit, you may be best served to get a higher-end model.

OVERALL, I GIVE THIS UNIT A 4 OUT OF 5. I HAVE BEEN VERY PLEASED AND IMPRESSED, AND WILL SAY THAT THIS UNIT HAS BEEN WORTH EVERY PENNY THAT I PAID FOR IT. THIS IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE BEST UNIT ON THE MARKET FOR THE ENTRY LEVEL GPS/NAVIGATION SYSTEM.

  Major value for the price!
Review created: 02/26/07
by: homefndr -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Price! Price! Price! Features rivaling much more expensive units. Easy to use!

Cons:
Lacks abundant instructions. Sources for accessories needed. Voice prompts could be better.

Having owned a Magellan RoadMate 700 for some three years now, for which I paid about $1,200...I feel confident to comment on the relative value in the MIO C310X. My trusty Magellan fell off the windshield on a cold morning recently, and I believe the antenna connection became damaged, as it now searches for signals but can't seem to find the satellites. I considered sending it in for repairs, as I am really spoiled by these things now...having come to rely a LOT on the Magellan for street guidance and trip planning. Then, I saw Staples was advertising the MIO 310X for only $198.00...or about.

Slow processor, uses TeleAtlas for mapping
Review created: 12/05/06
by: hbj200 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Cheap

Cons:
Cheap, slow processor, low-quality screen, out-of-date map database, bad routine engine

Unfortunately, it's *always* true that you get want you pay for. 1) The unit is really slow, compared to Sony, Garmin, TomTom. Sometimes it lags behind your driving which can be frustrating *AND* dangerous. (Imagine, driving past an exit only to be told seconds later that you missed it and you started panicking.) 2) It uses the TeleAtlas database which is inferior to the Navteq one. A lot of people have said that streets that are 5 years old can't be found in TeleAtlas but can be found on all the online mapping sites (Live, MSN, MapBlast, etc.) Many review sites also claim that TeleAtlas...

  A great unit...
Review created: 10/09/06
by: bradles -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Small and compact, quicker satellite fix than any predecessor - even indoors! Brighter screen.

Cons:
Menu interface takes a little bit of getting used to.

I had purchased a ROAD ANGEL 6000 here in Australia (because of it's supposedly great red light camera database) - which crashed or froze no fewer than 5 times over 3 days! After looking around at products such as the Garmin Nuvi, I found myself won over by the Mio C310. Why? Well, because not only does the C310 have accurate turns (the RoadAngel 6000 was usually 100 - 150 metres off for turns in residential areas, and around 350 metres off a freeway!), but it has several "themes" for the look of the maps - both day

  Very poorly design operating system
Review created: 07/05/06
by: jannadem -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
It looks good

Cons:
It is not practical. Very frustrating to use it.

I would like to upgrade from my old Garmin eMap to something with larger and color screen. This is my second GPS which I bought recently and returned the same day. See my previous review for Magellan 300 http://www.epinions.com/content_238524665476. The MIO 310 is very bad product. The screen display had very unpleasant ghost like shadow around fonts. It looked like old TV which is loosing colors. These are the problems which I found and which make this GPS waste of money: Software is absolutely terrible! The programmer was probably smoking or sniffing something when working on it. I am very..

Not so bad really depend on what you wish for...
Review created: 07/14/06
by: rogerbbsi -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
As a navigation tool only. it is great.

Cons:
Forget about the POI

I bought this product at Staple, I was looking for a bigger one but it was the only model available at the time. I have tested this product with a Garmin model i3 who had only 128 meg of ram. Navigation is better with the Mio, The screen is better with the Mio too, Data bank is a lot better on the Garmin. French and English speaking language on the Mio 310 and only English on the GARMIN but it come written in 14 language at least. You have the name of all the street that you pass written on the map of the garmin but only the name of the street where you will change direction on the Mio. I...
