Once again, They Might Be Giants do what they please and while many fans were turned off to some of the songs I think TMBG were simply being true to themselves. There are some real classics here (Older, Drink!, Bangs) and a few annoying tracks (Mr. Excitement, Cyclops Rock). Overall, it's a keeper. 4 1/2 Stars.
I bought this CD to expand my TMBG collection. Compared to the other TMBG CDs I have, this is my least favorite. There was only one duplicate song that was on another CD that I own and now I know why the other songs aren't on any other of their CDs.
The sound of the songs is not totally different from pop rock--a lot of the tunes are catchy, upbeat, easy to sing along with, and just fun. But the lyrics--what each song is actually about--is about as close to unadulterated silliness as you can get. They're both absurd and clever. And the sound of each song matches the subject, somehow. Like I said before, their style is friendly to the pop-attuned ear, but this album does have quite a variety of flavors, if you will.
You've got "Another First Kiss": a sweet, pretty, and simple little song. And "Cyclops Rock"--I'm not sure why it's well liked by TMBG fans, but I guess it is. It sounds kind of like hard rock, except that it's aware of its own silliness. The track "Mink Car" for which the album is named has more of a smooth jazzy feel. And just the instrumental intro to "Older" will make you chuckle even before the hilarious first verse begins. Okay, so probably it's mostly funny for us elderly folks. (-;
If you don't know TMBG, there's probably no way to describe it. You just have to listen for yourself. And if you do know TMBG and like their other albums, this one should be no disappointment. It may be my favorite; it's also the album that introduced me to TMBG, so that may be why.

TMBG: Now 50% original!

Pros: Many solid songs, good range of music
Cons: Old songs, some experiments don't work out well
My first clue that my favorite band had changed radically appeared in the album title: never before had They Might Be Giants gave a song and album the same title. Just looking at the track listing, I knew this wasn't quite the same band I first became enamored with. The second occured the other night, as I heard the unmistakable sound of the Johns during a Chrystler PT Cruiser ad. I'm so proud; they've finally fulfilled their lifelong dream of selling out. Oddly enough, I'm sincere in that sentiment. So with the warning that I would consider this the worst Giants album ever, I slipped "Mink...

The Reigning Kings of Geek-Rock Return
Review created: 09/10/01

Pros: Original, unique, and diverse. Offers plenty of what Giants fans have come to expect.
Cons: A few tracks have been available elsewhere for a while now.
It has been more than five years since They Might be Giants, reigning kings of geek-rock, have released their last studio album. Such a long break does not mean that co-frontmen John Flansburgh and John Linnell have been resting on their laurels. Quite the contrary. In the years since Factory Showroom, the group's last studio release, they have been pushing hard against their ever-expanding musical boundaries. They have increased their presence with mainstream audiences by contributing to the soundtracks for Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me and Malcom in the Middle. They have dipped...

Mink Car: My Least Favorite TMBG Album So Far.
Review created: 08/30/01

Pros: Some good tracks.
Cons: Nothing as catchy, or as rocking as TMBG fans are used to.
Every time I buy an album by a band I'm a big fan of, it comes with a large amount of trepidation. I'm always wondering whether the band can move me in the way that they have with the past albums, and basically, if they can live up to themselves. After being fortunate enough to catch the Giants in concert, and them putting on a really, really excellent show, I figured that this album was a shoe-in, a no-brainer, great Giants addition. As it turns out, this is the most diappointed I've been with TMBG. There are some solid tracks on the album. But there are also some tracks that I won't listen..

Old Giants Still Rocking
Review created: 11/16/02

Pros: Eclectic mix of top-notch new (and some kinda old) TMBG tunes.
Cons: A few bland inclusions ("Another First Kiss")
A spacy, light, experimental mood permeates They Might Be Giants seventh studio album, _Mink Car_, and it is very welcome. The band hasn't sounded this loose since their 1990 breakthrough _FLOOD_. Every album since then had been getting gradually darker - which had it's advantages, especially on the eerie _John Henry_ - until they sounded downright trapped in _FACTORY SHOWROOM_. They work well with a full band, but eventually that big brass sound seemed like it was trapping our dear Johns and pulling a lot of the enthusiasm and adventure out of their studio endeavors (while having a...

A Review

Pros: Some things about it are positive.
Cons: Some things may be negative.
This is a strange little CD. I'm torn between two opinions of it. It's got a lot of fine songs, and is the most sing-alongable they've produced since maybe Lincoln (1989). The first three songs are perfection, and it never gets awful aside from a three minute excursion known as "Another First Kiss" (which I don't bash for it's sentimental lyrics, but it's puke-inducing production). "Cyclops Rock", "Man, It's So Loud In Here", "Hovering Sombrero", "Older", and "Working Undercover for the Man" are classics. "My Man" is one of my favorite They Might Be Giants songs. They have finally returned to.
