Chicago director Rob Marshall's pretty but empty (or pretty empty) film has all the elements of an Oscar® contender: solid adaptation (from Arthur Golden's bestseller), beautiful locale, good acting, lush cinematography. But there's something missing at the heart, which leaves the viewer sucked in, then left completely detached from what's going on.
It's hard to find fault with the fascinating story, which traces a young girl's determination to free herself from the imprisonment of scullery maid to geisha, then from the imprisonment of geisha to a woman allowed to love. Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), a young girl with curious blue eyes, is sold to a geisha house and doomed to pay off her debt as a cleaning girl until a stranger named The Chairman (Ken Watanabe) shows her kindness. She is inspired to work hard and become a geisha in order to be near the Chairman, with whom she has fallen in love. An experienced geisha (Michelle Yeoh) chooses to adopt her as an apprentice and to use as a pawn against her rival, the wicked, legendary Hatsumomo (Gong Li). Chiyo (played as an older woman by Ziyi Zhang), now renamed Sayuri, becomes the talk of the town, but as her path crosses again and again with the Chairman's, she finds the closer she gets to him the further away he seems. Her newfound "freedom" turns out to be trapping, as men are allowed to bid on everything from her time to her virginity.
Some controversy swirled around casting Chinese actresses in the three main Japanese roles, but Zhang, Yeoh and Gong in particular ably prove they're the best for the part. It's admirable that all the actors attempted to speak Japanese-accented English, but some of the dialogue will still prove difficult to understand; perhaps it contributes to some of the emotion feeling stilted. Geisha has all the ingredients of a sweeping, heartbreaking epic and follows the recipe to a T, but in the end it's all dressed up with no place to go.--

Finally, an honest representation of what a Geisha really is. "Memoirs of a Geisha" clearly depicts a part of the Japanese culture which is highly respected and honored by the Japanese. Geishas are revered by the Japanese; as Americans rever movie stars in the United States. "Memoirs of a Geisha" is an outstanding movie; one which should be filed in the "must see again and again" section of your DVD collection.

For Myself I was so amazed from moment on in to the very end. This story well written took me to a place I shall never forget! Geisha! One of a kind. What i adore with this film is this is not your everyday American movie. It takes you to a place of different faces and places. Ones that aren't on the set fighting or your horror film. It takes you to a place and lets you see the wonders of other countries and shows that you don't have to be labeled to make a fascination film. Beauty and art is written all over this film and I am sure it will be just as a delight for others as it was myself....N.Y

The costumes are absolutely incredible, a real feast for the eyes. The soundtrack is absolutely magnificent and makes you feel like you're right in the midst of the action.

Beautifully Haunting......I read "Memoirs of a Geisha" in my book discussion group several years ago, but just recently rented the movie. It was fantastic, so I immediately purchased my own copy. The movie is true to the book, with some small changes not affecting the overall storyline. I thought the characters were well-cast and believable, and the cinematography was amazing. I particularly enjoyed the special features about the movie's set development and musical score. This new information has allowed me to appreciate the movie even further each time I watch it. The story is sad yet hopeful. The first time I watched it, I was brought to tears several times. This beautifully haunting adaptation is a joy to watch again and again.

Very good movie.This movie shows the history of these women who were their sold by their families at a young age to become a geisha. Alot of them were treated horribly, but if they were chosen to become a geisha they had it made for the rest of their lives.
The relationships between the characters in this movie were touching. The jealousies and the friendships and loves were very well shown.
I highly recommend this movie.

THis was an excellent movie that took me totally by surprise. A co-worker of mine suggested that I view this movie and let me borrow it. It kept my attention the whole time and it was just an awesome movie that I wouldn't have considered ever watching if she hadn't suggested it. It took me a while to actuall y pop it in and watch it but boy when I did I was up until 2am watching this movie and I had to go to work the next day!

Great movie, even better bookThis is a great movie for any collection and the book is even better. You really come to appreciate the life of a geisha and japanese culture after watching this film. Many people have misconceptions of what a geisha is and this story takes you inside their world. The movie follows pretty closely to the book and the filming is just beautiful. Definitely recommend!

Memoirs of a GeishaI decided to buy the DVD because I heard if its excellent reviews. The movie was great to me because the actors/actresses made you feel the mood or emotion they portrayed. I was interested in knowing what the life of a Geisha was about. I believe I have learned cultural respect from this viewing and would recommend the movie to others.

What a beautiful, moving piece of flowing art! The movie, along with a theme throughout the movie, "water", is the best way to describe this movie. It's always moving and no matter what happens to Sayuri, the main character, she keeps perservearing through abuse and hardship. She really is a courageous heroine, and I think what makes her so appealing, is that as a human being, it is easy to identify with her. I am not just saying this because I am a woman. I am the last person in the world who loves "chick flicks". I don't like movies that are all wrapped up in a pretty pink ribbon. And, this movie is not just a pretty package. Besides the emotionally intriguing storyline, the visual effects of the movie, is sheer BEAUTY. I swear, I was so caught off guard at the shocking beauty of this film, that I was in tears thoughout the whole film. It's like going to a play or performance & you realize for those few moments, that people can be better than they ever thought, and the talent and inner beauty of these people is truly moving. There are only a few moments like that, in which we see past the physical. It's like hearing a beautiful voice singing, only the voice you are hearing is that of the story of this beautiful human being, Sayuri. Maybe that's why I liked it so much~because it makes you feel proud to be alive.
I tried to convince my father to see this movie, but he was not going to give it a chance, because it was a "chick flick". His loss, I say, because the movie is a treasure not to be missed!!!!!

Love a good longing for love love story with a happy ending. Fell in love with the main character because she was so hopefull and never gave up. I din't even think it was to long, although it is a long movie. Will watch it several times in the future.

This movie is long, but it keeps you staring at the TV screen to see what is happening and what will happen next.
This is a movie of cunning strength in the will and drive of women in that culture and what they go through for their version of happiness.
Well worth renting but I don't suggest buying as it will not be a movie that you would watch more than once.

When I first was going to see this movie I thought I wouldn't like it. I was so wrong! This movie captures you from the beginning and just sucks you in until the end. You feel every disappoint and every struggle as if you are there. It was so much better than I ever expected it to be. After seeing it, I had to have it!

This film is extremely acurate and helps others look at the culrtures in the orient. Very exciting, romantic and captivating. I own the dvd and have watched it 12 times. You'll never get bored of it. Great performance!!!

This movie is good but it is one of those movies you have to pay very close attention to. You also will probably have to watch it more than once to really understand it completely. The acting was excellent, the storyline was very interesting & real. It was educational for me to understand another culture & way of life. The costumes & scenery are spectacular.
I would recommend this movie to anyone interested not only in a good story but also in educating yourself on other cultures of the world.

I loved this movie. I find that alot of romantic movies all the same, that the characters never really have to sacrafice to get who they want, but this movie shows sacrafice, love, and commitment to things that they may not want to do,to get the one they love.
