Meet Joe Black is very good movie with a few surprises. Brad Pitts and
Anthony Hopkins give terrific performances and had nice chemistry The
supporting cast which when put together results in a wonderful movie
well worth the watch.

Great Flick!!!!!
Love the actors! Great story line and leaves room for a sequel.
Hubby really liked the movie and wanted it for his library.
Can make you laugh and get a little teary-eyed at the end. But knowing that the bad guys gets his makes it worthwhile!!!!!

The movie was used but in terrible condition. There were several parts where the dvd was so damaged you couldn't hear or see the movie. I have purchased many used DVD's before and never had one in this condition. Very disappointed to have wasted my money.

  A Strange Movie--An Allegory--With a Strange Ending
Review created: 01/06/08

I liked this movie from the very beginning perhaps because of its star power and lush photography and fantastic music. Actually, "Meet Joe Black" is weird.

It starts out with Bill Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) having a heart attack close to his 65th birthday. On a second front, his grown daughter Medical Dr. Susan Parrish (Claire Forlani) is meeting a great new guy with no name (Brad Pitt)in a coffee shop. They have a nice chat, part outside, and he is killed by a passing car. She doesn't know it.

The two plots--actually there are three--merge when Bill Parrish continues to have heart attack symptoms and hears weird voices in his head. Finally, the weird voice announces that he is Death and futhermore appears in the body of the mysterious stranger (Brad Pitt). Death takes the name Joe Black and makes a bargain with Bill Parrish: Bill can remain living as long as Death is enjoying himself. That means that Joe Black becomes the constant companion of Bill Parrish, who is really a corporate bigwig.

Now the third plot: Bill's company is entertaining a merger with Bontecou Enterprises. One of the key players in the merger is Drew (Jake Weber), who is corrupt. He uses the constant appearances of Joe Black to make Bill Parrish look weak and incompetent. He even goes to the extreme of having Bill terminated as chairman of the board. But the merger hasn't happened yet.

The second plot continues with Death (I mean Joe Black) falling in love with Dr. Susan. She thinks that Joe is the mysterious stranger, and Death lets her think so. Joe even talks about them going away together. Isn't that weird?

This movie lasts 178 minutes, and it actually takes that long to unravel all of this plot. I will say that it has a sort of happy ending.

Many critics have panned this movie. But if you give it a chance, it does make sense. Think of Joe Black as a vampire that is courting your grown daughter--and you are the only one who knows the truth. Think how horrified you would be; that is Bill Parrish's dilemma.

Trust me in this: this movie is eye candy with great actors doing a super job with lush photography and fantastic music. It is a great ride if you just can enjoy the fantasy and allegory.

In summary I have only had one questionably bad experience of dealing with Half.com. In the past five years which was due to a simple misunderstanding on my part. All my purchases have been as described and sent within a reasonable time line. I actually would rather buy from someone here than go through the hassle of a brick and mortar store. whachler@pacbell.net

I too think this is Brad Pitt's best work. Really good movie about human nature. It shows that Brad can actually act and this is one of the movies that he looks good in too.

I purchased this movie because this is the Brad Pitt actor before the whole Brangelina thing when he was still quite good and I still had faith in him being a decent man. Anyway, the movie shows a different side to the life and death saga we all go through. Very intense in a few parts and makes your mind think about things from a different point of view. I can't say what I "disliked" about it as there was nothing I didn't like in this movie other than the fact that it ended! See ya on eBay!

In my opinion this was Brad Pitt's best movie. Anthony Hopkins was perfect in his part. He made the movie shine. I cried when they walked over the hill, and cheered when he came back as innocent as a new baby. Will always be in My top ten list. I had missed it when it came out, now I have seen it five times.

I decided to buy this movie because I seen about half the movie on T.V., the half being the last half. I would be flipping the channels, and always catch this movie on the second half of the story. I decided to catch the first half by buying the movie. i am glad i did. This movie is a great, a must see for the romantic. I love the cast of actors, all great, the story line, a great, and their is nothing to dislike about this movie.

Meet Joe Black ~ Take A Buddy To The Movies W/O
Review created: 05/23/03
by: drdevience -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Everything

Cons:
not a damn thing

Meet Joe Black has gotten pretty much panned. It even sits at a 3 star over-all rating here on Epinions as I type this review. Why? I've just watched it again and I gotta say it just keeps getting better and better with each viewing. I love this movie! I can't believe you people. I come for you, and you want to stay, I let you stay and you want to go. What you have here is a story about DEATH. Not about dying per se, but about DEATH himself. Ya see, DEATH wants to know what it means to experience life. He's supposed to be claiming a corporate big wig, but decides to make a deal instead. If...

"I should have my head examined again."
Review created: 11/18/04
by: brendan2 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
some of the acting is semi-good

Cons:
the rest of the acting is atrocious, awful writing and directing, excruciatingly long runtime

Bad movies suck. An obvious, but true, statement. It's bad enough when I watch a bad movie of my own free will, but it's worse when someone else forces me to watch a movie I avoided for years because I knew it would suck. Now I like Brad Pitt, so I was pleased when my roommates, who are quickly becoming notorious for their atrocious taste in movies, suggested a Brad Pitt movie. I hoped for something like Se7en or Fight Club. Unfortunately, that was not happening, and we settled in to watch 1998's bomb Meet Joe Black. In this film, we get to meet Death himself, played by Brad Pitt. Death comes.

I Met Joe Black for the Take a Buddy to the Movies W/O~
Review created: 05/29/03
by: yourcloud -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Anthony Hopkins is beautiful

Cons:
it's almost as long as Titanic...

I don t know why people hate this movie. I have actually admitted to real life persons that I have seen this movie, in its entirety and I get a mixture of facial expressions that mostly remind me of a cross between smelling a case of mothballs and bitter beer face. (Not a pretty combination, rest assured.) I ve seen it twice now and I think it s pretty good for what it is about (as many have stated, including my pal Drdevience, it s the death takes a holiday concept.) I almost hated it too, but then something happened and I plugged on past the first twenty-five minutes and now I think it s...

I Didn't Think I Would Like It, But I Was Wrong!
Review created: 10/13/04
by: ktk3438 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Awesome talent, great story.

Cons:
Slow at times

This would not have been the type of movie I would have pulled off the shelf in the video store, and brought home to watch. I had looked at it in the rental store, read the box, and put it back more than once. It just did not seem to grab me from the description written on the box. But after it had been available for over a year or so, my wife went to the video store, read the box, and brought it home. She watched it alone, because she knew I did not seem interested in it. She liked it so much, that for her upcoming birthday, and she was thrilled to death. We owned that movie for over a year,.
