Mary Poppins, the Disney movie based on the books written by British author, P.L. Travers, is an all-time childhood favorite of mine. Yet, it has also become quite popular with my two children, as well. Both of the girls enjoy the fantastical story, dancing and memorable, catchy songs. At the time of its production in 1964, Mary Poppins was actually quite technologically advanced in the way of their special effects. We did one of those horrible, evil things this Xmas. Worse than coal in the stocking. Even worse than when your grandmother would give you those horrible, itchy, fluorescent sweaters. We gave gifts to people that were so not expecting them. Granted, we wanted to give them gifts (well, I wanted to give them cookies as a gift, but the other half thought this wasn't enough or something, so...), so we did. But we had that awkward, "oh, you should have told us. We left yours at our house," response that everyone knows better than to believe. So, surprise surprise when we were greeted with gifts...

For as long as I can remember, this has been one of my very favorite movies. One of Disney's finest films ever, it employs the technique used in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the unfortunate Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and other live actions films of introducing animated characters to interact with the live ones. This magic occurs when Mary Poppins, Bert, and the Banks children, Jane and Michael, jump through one of Bert's sidewalk drawings and land in an animated world with a lush green park and a horse race.
