I read this book straight through, only pausing to wipe my eyes or blow my nose. An incredible good read that leaves one looking at life and love in a new light. This book reminds us that we are all indeed mortal. That our time on earth is brief and temporary. Every day is precious and should be cherished. Although I am a dog owner and dog lover, I found myself examining all of the relationships in my life after reading this book. We way to often judge, and find character flaws in the people around us, often the ones we love the most. What we should be doing is loving them.......unconditionally. A truly great read, even if you don't own a dog!
John Grogan writes about his relationship with his dog Marley; but it is so much more than that. Marley is big, goofy and sometimes destructive, but Grogan reaches somewhere most of us can't go to understand and love this beautiful creature for what he is -- a loyal companion who returns Grogan's love unconditionally. The relationship between Grogan and his wife as they start their marriage and family with the dog named Marley is hillarious. Marley runs wild through an upscale outdoor cafe in Boca knocking down people and tables as he goes, he tears up the house and gets kicked out of dog school...but he seems to understand the loss of their baby as he stands so quietly with his head down as Jenny hugs him and sobs. The book is well written, moves quickly along and ends up to be so much more than a book about a dog. It's about life, dedication, loyalty and promises.
I saw this book at Barnes & Noble, and borrowed it from the library first. As a dog owner & dog lover, I laughed & sobbed, and decided to buy 2 copies; one for me, and one to loan to friends!
great transaction. thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is a must have for anyone who has ever had a dog! The Author is so expressive you can picture everything that is going on. If you have even thought this might be a good book, you are right!
this is a great book for all pet owners, especially if you have a lab. received the book from my daughter, read it and loved it. didn't want to loan out my book because my daughter signed it from her and her dog....purchased a new copy for a friend who also owns a yellow lab. sure hope he enjoys it as much as i did.....i am absolutely going through the exact same situations as in the book...can't wait to see the movie...
This was a great book! I couldn't see to put it down. I found myself finished within a matter a three days! This is by far one of the best books I have read in the past five years.
I have been meaning to read this book for a good while and just now had the time. It is a wonderful story for all dog lovers. I laghed and I cried and saw my own dogs in the story. I would reccomend it for all dog lovers.
I had this book sitting on my book shelves for a while now and picked it up to take to the beach for the weekend. I finished it in 2 days as I couldn't stop turning the pages to see what mischief Marley was going to get into next. This book made me laugh out loud and cry out loud... definately worth the read.
This is a fantastic book for dog owners. You can really relate. I have a golden that is just as "playful" as Marley. I also had Corgi that died a couple years back that was 14 years old - so I know what it was like to have an aging dog that you are not ready to part with. Warning - I cried through the last two chapters. Great book.
I loved that I could easily relate with the experiences in the book. I am an owner of a laborador retriever and a lover of the breed. While reading the book it reminded me of my late black lab named Jake, who was also a hundred pound bundle of mischief and love. I was able to relate a lot of Marley's behaviors to those of Jake's and that allowed me to remember and cherish those moments. The scenarios described in the book of the dogs disobedience as well as loyalty and compassion for the owner are bound truths and John Grogan captures every ounce masterfully!
I would recommend this book to any dog (esp. Labrador) lover.
I can not say enough about the book. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommend it to any animal lover! Seller was quick with delivery and item was in very good shape. Thanks
This is one of the most joyfull book I have ever read. I read it as slowly as I could because I didn't want it to end. It if for anyone who has ever had that one in a million dog. The one that you get one time only in a lifetime if you are really lucky. I was, so this spoke to my heart. It put a real smile on my face, however, I knew what was coming at the end of the book and I hated to face the inevitable.......................I shed a lot of tears. This book was a real journey, that warms the heart.
This book kept me laughing in the beginning and crying at the end. A wonderful book about a relationship between a man and his dog..If anyone ever raised a pup to a full grown dog, they will see themselves in this book.. The love the writer had for his dog is one, that anyone who loves a dog can understand..
Sweet, touching and hilarious. The true story about author John Grogan and the tornado named Marley that changed his life. A GREAT read for anyone that's ever loved an untameable being- pet or person.
Our family has always had a dog, and when we could afford it, always had golden retrievers. We both love to read, and like to read about dogs; even bloodhounds (Virginia Laniers' books). A close firend recommended the Grogan book, and I first read a copy from the library. When I wanted to buy one, I didn't bid very wisely, so got three copies of it! I will keep one, and share the other with two of my granddaaughters who also currently own goldens. I appreciated all the humor and love coming through the writing, also. Raising dogs from the puppy stage can indeed be a trying time. All ours, were quite normal and lovely as adult dogs. One of the others was quite a bit like Marley as a puppy. The other one is still a puppy; all were out-doors animals.
Thank you for providing such an entertaining reading experience. Do you have more books in progress?
This Book is one of the best uplifting, comical and also serious books I have ever read. All animal lovers need to get a copy of this book to read for yourself.
