This documentary-style depiction of medical army life during the Korean war puts the viewer alongside the draftees and regular army personnel. It's worth watching time after time.

1970 Robert Altman's M.A.S.H. - historic, groundbreaking, TV show inspiring........and edgy, even after all this time. A must see for a variety of reasons. It's a classic, dig?

Bought this for my husband - a classic all around! He has only seen parts of the movie and always regretted tuning in too late. Now he has his own copy. Also bought the sound track earlier on.

The TV show was way better. It was way to slow. If I would have watch the movie before the show I would have never watch the show.

Yes, It IS Better Than The Show
Review created: 12/06/06

I am a long-time, die-hard fan of the M*A*S*H TV show, and during the first time watching the DVD, I had to keep reminding myself that the movie was in fact the original, true M*A*S*H, not the TV show. Once I had that established in my head, I was able to truly watch the movie for what it was. As you can tell from my subject heading, this movie IS better than the TV show. Actually, I wish the TV show had kept more of the characters that were exclusive to the movie, such as Hawkeye and Trapper's 4th roomate from the movie, Elliot Gould's character (Babe, as Hawkeye referred to him). I even showed it to a friend of mine who, like me, was a die-hard TV fan, and he told me it was better than the show. The sad part is that most people have never heard of the movie of M*A*S*H, but only the TV show. If you know someone who likes M*A*S*H (or through some bizarre twist of fate has never heard of the M*A*S*H series at all) the TV show, this movie is a great gift idea. I also recommend watching the movie a second time through with the commentary on. There is a lot you learn from the commentary that you would not find out anyway else. To reiterate, I HIGHLY recommend watching M*A*S*H, the movie.

Real drama mixed with humor make this a real classic. Only a movie of such quality could spawn a series that ran for over ten years! A+ rating!

A Review of the film M*A*S*H
Review created: 06/28/02
by: AliventiAsylum-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
excellent dialogue, good chemistry between characters, shows reality of war

Cons:
documentaries on DVD seem to use the same material and don't seem that different

I have to wonder just how many people actually think of the movie first when they hear the word M*A*S*H spoken. How many people even know that it was originally a movie? The television series was a hit for eleven years, but it all started with a wonderful film directed by Robert Altman. If you have never seen the movie, only the television show, do yourself a favor and rent the movie. I had seen the movie a few times on television, but there were scenes which were cut. The new DVD release is completely restored and uncut; a real treat to watch. How do you sum up a story when there really is...

M*A*S*H: "The game of life is hard to play, I'm gonna lose it anyway..."

Pros:
Funny, irreverent, provocative, controversial, "politically incorrect..."

Cons:
Some viewers will be turned off by the "political incorrectness" of some scenes.

Probably no cinematic comedy produced by Hollywood in the last half of the twentieth century is as irreverent, disdainful of authority, critical of war and its effects, and, incidentally, as funny as M*A*S*H, that 1970 comedic masterpiece starring Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt, Gary Burghoff, Sally Kellerman, and Robert Duvall. Written by Ring Lardner, Jr., and directed by Robert Altman (in his directorial debut), this is another one of my all-time favorite films; one I've seen many times, and one that I recently purchased on DVD. M*A*S*H is actually a very difficult film to..

Pros:
Fine acting, sharp dialogue

Cons:
It's too much a product of the Vietnam era

Although most people nowadays tend to associate the title M*A*S*H with the Emmy-winning TV series which aired originally on CBS from 1972 to 1983, the truth is that the very popular show is a spinoff from two sources - the novel by Richard Hooker (real name: Richard Hornberger), and the 1970 film directed by Robert Altman (Nashville, Gosford Park). Based on Hornberger's experiences as a draftee doctor who served in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, the three incarnations of M*A*S*H all share various characters, settings, and situations. Most of the action takes place at...

Pros:
Altman's Direction, Story, Music, Humor, Antics, & Cast.

Cons:
Nada.

When film buffs mention like directors like John Ford, Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, or Elia Kazan. They know what films they would be mentioned or immediately know a movie by watching and be aware of a style. Then there s the late Robert Altman who is known by his own cinematic style. Overlapping dialogue, lots of improvisation, and a huge cast, Altman has made many films that in a variety of genres where some movies were considered seminal while others were considered his worst. Yet, Altman defined himself through his own improvisational style and his deep collaboration with actors into...

Review created: 10/31/02
by: mfunk75 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The horrors of surgery sleep side-by-side with the absurdities of war, ensemble acting

Cons:
Altman's commentary track on the DVD

MY REVIEW OF THE MOVIE PROPER (4 l_l) The Robert Altman style, so familiar to moviegoers over the last thirty years, was unleashed in this film about doctors at a Korean War-era Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. The documentary-style camera work, laying back from the action but given license to zoom in and out as it sees fit, works its wonders best in the operation scenes. Three tables of patients and doctors, all acting at once, and the camera still manages to capture every piece of relevant information, without making the whole mess confusing. The overlapping dialogue, which I imagine gave...
