Love Actually is actually a sleeper movie -- one of those films that didn't get much publicity but is an amazingly witty and interesting movie. I'm not a big fan of watching the same movie more than once, but this is one movie that I've easily watched 10 times.

The movie weaves together the lives and stories of different on the days leading up to Christmas. The Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) of England and his secretary, the Prime Minister's sister (Emma Thompson) and her husband (Alan Rickman), two movie stand-ins, a has-been rock idol, a cater-waiter, a recent widower and his son, an artist and his friend's fiance, and much more.

The stories show the joys of love, the pain of loss, and the excitement for new beginnings. Brilliantly told, the movie captivating and fun, with moments of sadness intermixed. By the time the film comes to an end, you are laughing and filled with happiness.

As an added bonus, the movie has a great soundtrack -- including 'All I Want for Christmas'.

I Was One Giant Goose Bump for Love Actually
Review created: 11/09/03

Pros:
Great casting, great music, great chemistry...

Cons:
Too many story lines - I wanted separate movies for each!!!

Preamble Hot men. Gorgeous, but non-threatening women. Hormones. Relationships. A wedding. Christmas. Bitchin' music. My gawd! Could you ask for a more perfect movie?! The Story This is gonna be difficult to explain. The story is really about relationships - love, desire, betrayal, lust, forgiveness, and possibilities. It involves several people, all intertwined in one way or another however, you don't figure this out until much later. I'm not going to list ALL of the stories - just some of them :). Daniel (Liam Neeson) is a recently widowed man who has a moody, but adorable eleven year-old...

  Obsessive Optimism - 'Love Actually'
Review created: 05/08/04

Pros:
Bill Nighy. Hugh Grant. It dodges your hatred.

Cons:
It's not that fast, so you might catch it.

The truth is, the old question about the half-full/half-empty glass is utterly useless. Now sure, it s a whimsical pseudo-Koan that pseudo-adults in suits and dresses that wear their tags on their sleeves can pop into the conversation with a wink over the martinis they don t like but are oh so fashionable. But, it s a question with no pragmatic application, and mainly because the triviality of the question s posture is such that the nay-est of nay-sayers will readily play along with glass half fullness . Instead of glasses and their contents, I prefer to look at weathermen (err... persons)....

Love Actually - Stupid Title. Fun Movie.

Pros:
Cute, Light, some good performances

Cons:
Cute, Light, some people will hate it

Okay, some things just need to be said. And someone has to say them. I nominate me. So here s the thing. Love Actually is just a really stupid, lame, ridiculous movie title. It matters not one bit whether the movie is horrible or brilliant, the title just doesn t roll off the tongue. There, I got that out of the way, and I feel much better. But really, with all the money it undoubtedly took to make this film, all the stars taking part in it, all the complicated plot work, and they couldn t think of anything else to call it? It s like going to the trouble of putting together Bouillabaisse and..

Take your girlfriend to L.A. -- Love Actually (Lean-N-Mean2 write-off)

Pros:
All you need is love.

Cons:
You don't need the boobs or the fat jokes, but oh well, they be there.

My first thought when I read about Love Actually was "You've got to be kidding." Eight love stories all at once. I say, I say, it just ain't possible. Then finally, I decided to take the plunge. Smart move, self. There is no secret surprise that everyone's been holding back, y'all. This is actually eight (or more) different love stories, all happening at the same time, just before Christmas. Sure, there are connections -- this guy is this girl's brother, these two work at the same place, but ultimately the connections are superfluous. What matters here is that magical four letter word that we.

Love Actually in many flavors and styles
Review created: 08/01/04

Pros:
Interesting look at all the different sorts of love out there in the world.

Cons:
All of the stories are brief and simple, which really drags the film down.

I found myself pleasantly surprised when I saw this rather jumbled tangle of a film about friends, families, and love. I had expected something that was silly, and a bit of a farce, not something that was ranging through the entire spectrum of human experience. Set during the weeks before Christmas, in several families and couples, it's a look at the modern world, and how we manage to still make it, despite our best efforts to mess it up. Billy Mack (Bill Nighly) is a has-been rock star who's done too many drugs, drank too much booze, and with the aid of his agent, he's trying to make a hit...
