I really liked the song selection, and I wanted to hear Elton with the symphony, but the quality of the recording was not up to his usual studio standards. I realize it is a live recording, and it can be difficult to get the mix right with a large symphony and a musician like Elton, but I was still hoping for a better recording.

Pros: A powerful live performance combining this star's pop music with the backing of a symphony orchestra.
Cons: Sometimes difficult to find in stores; Recorded prior to Elton's throat surgery, his voice is a bit rough in quality.
Elton John Live In Australia With The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra" (MCA Records, released 1987) is an incredible album. Elton John is a showman and musician extraordinaire in his own right, but when coupled with a symphony orchestra backing him musically, the results are phenomenal. Every song is powerful; one not only hears the music, but feels it. The fourteen tracks bear a sound that outdoes the original recordings. As stated on the jacket's back cover, the concert took place on December 14, 1986 before an audience of eleven thousand people in Sydney Entertainment Centre. The album's...

Pros: Great idea that really works
Cons: Johns voice is a little off (due to illness)
Every since I saw Emerson, Lake and Palmer on the Works tour with the full orchestra in tow, I have been a sucker for this type of presentation. This does not mean I think every song that throws in a violin is great. It just means that I happen to enjoy the rich, full sound that only an orchestra can provide. With that little insight into my thinking let's take a look at a very under appreciated album by Elton John. This album I found in a bargain bin and wondered why I have never heard of it before. A live recording of Elton John and no one had ever heard of it?? Puzzling. So, buying it, I...

Pros: Musical genius
Cons: none
While this is an older album of his, it is still my favorite. This album is a live performance of his best songs as of 1988, I believe. It was performed in Sydney Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It is his greatest artistic piece of work to date. If you are having a romantic dinner or just a quite night at home by yourself, this is the album to play. Tonight has always been one of my favourite songs and it, like others is done wonderfully here. IF you are ever depressed and need one of those CD's that will help you move through it all, this is it as well. Trust me, if you like.
