And yet another disappointment from the people who brought us Tarzan the musical. It almost seems like Disney isn't even trying to make something good. The general trend for them it to just put the minimum into song and acting and go all out in spectacle. Most likely, if Disney tried to do something original on Broadway, it would probably have the minimum in the story too. But that's all I'll say on Disney here.

I've listen to this soundtrack twice, and I did not really care for what I heard. The songs that were added in were generally not good, with few exceptions (I liked "She's in Love"). When there wasn't something wrong with how the songs were sung, it was a problem with how the song was written. As for the songs that were taken from the movie, they ranged from the level of decent to barely passable, but nothing actually stood out from how the songs were done in the movie. "Part of Your World" and "Kiss the Girl" were done fairly well, and while "Under the Sea" was OK, I was hoping for something better. I didn't care for "Poor Unfortunate Souls," but then again, I didn't really care for the voice of Ursula. It just doesn't have anything on the darker sounding voice or the Ursula in the movie. The voice of Ariel was much better fitting than Ursula's, and she sand her songs pretty well. And while the voice of Sebastian wasn't as good-fitting as Ariel's, he still performed them fairly well. While I can't say anything about how the spectacle worked, I at least have a general idea of how the storyline worked. The CD doesn't contain a synopsis to compare changes from the movie, but the presence of the song "The Contest" shows that the ending is different. I looked up the synopsis on Wikipedia.org, and I have to say, I don't really like what they did with the ending. I won't say anymore than that so that I won't ruin the experience of someone going to see it.

I don't really care for this soundtrack at the moment, but it will probably grow on me like Tarzan did. But even if that is the case, I will still probably prefer the movie to this. I only really bought this because I collect musical soundtracks and I have all the other Disney ones. If that weren't the case, I probably wouldn't have bought this, because I hadn't heard anything good about it and I didn't expect much from it after Tarzan. But whether you buy it or not is your call. I just hope you enjoy it more than I did.
