I bought the Linksys RV082 to replace my Netgear FVS338 which didn't seem to be performing up to the specifications. This unit is a better performer but no where near as polished as the Netgear FVS338.
The pros are that it has an internal power supply and only needs a regular PC Type Power Cord. The unit also comes with Rackmount Ears which other devices at this level do not. The unit is somewhat easy to set up and it performs well until you get in to the VPN end of things.
Cons - Would be the lack of examples in documentation as well as the pitiful "VPN Client" that it comes with. This is nothing but a wrapper for the already built in Windows PPP Connection. This in my opinion gives a false sense of security for people that are using this to connect remotely. I was never able to get it to work with a "Real" VPN Client so I can not comment on its performance.
The reason I bought this was to do a Gateway to Gateway VPN Tunnel (using two of these devices) between two locations. Getting them to connect was easy but the connections would drop occasionally and required a reboot to get them back up. This never happened with the Netgears that these replaced.
Once the tunnel was up and running they did however perform better than the Netgears which is what I was looking for. I did however go back to the Netgears strictly for their reliability.
If you are looking for a good somewhat low cost VPN Router / Firewall that you aren't going to use for Site to Site connections I would suggest giving this a try. It has a very high throughput for the speedy connections that we are getting now like FIOS.
I have installed about 20 of these. The PPTP server is easy to use and setup. Also the 192 bit AES tunnels are stable and easy to use too. Just find your tolerance for encryption overhead and make yourself secure. You can't go wrong for the price, and it's not thrid party, it's supported by Linksys.
