The subtitles didn't bother me in this passionate tale of forbidden love. Exquisite movie! You can't stop watching....it took off from the beginning and held you close. Tita and Pedro are passionately in love, but the family has an ancient tradition. The youngest girl in the family must remain unmarried to care for her parents. Tita's mother is a woman who is unyielding and stern, so Pedro marries Tita's older sister so he can be near her. In the story, you feel the sexual tension between the two and so for Tita, she takes on the part of the family cook and transforms food into sexual passion for Pedro by using ordinary spices. Her creations bring out the heated desires in everyone. Sort of a Tom Jones type movie at the dinner table!
Very sensual movie and you feel so deeply for Tita and Pedro. It also has it's comic moments when her sister takes off with some bandits only to return much later as their leader. She knows the love Tita and Pedro feel for each other and takes Tita's side in all this. The sister that Pedro marries is a shrew at best and she knows she will never have her husband's love so she can make it miserable for Tita at times. This is probably more a movie women can immerse themselves into for a few hours. Beautifully done all around.

Pros: A story that is rich in food and plot.
Cons: none.
I had borrowed a DVD from a friend a while ago and still hadn't watched it, so I finally got a chance to watch "Like Water for Chocolate ("Como Agua Para Chocolate"). As I sat down to watch (with a cool drink in hand because today was a very hot day) I quickly became immersed in this intoxicatingly beautiful story. Can food stir up emotions? Food can definitely be an aphrodisiac, but can it stir up feelings of sadness and love too? This is a beautiful story of three young daughters, Rosaura, Gertrudis and Tita, the youngest. Their mother Dona Elena (Regina Torne) is the wife of a fairly well.

Pros: Beautiful story
Cons: Dubbed voices are a little goofy
Even though I would consider myself to be culturally inept, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I was introduced to me by my sister, who coincidentally, likes all things foreign. Anything to do with the good ole US of A is benign to her. We first watched this movie in Spanish, with English subtitles, but I found the reading to be tiresome and it disallowed concentration on the more subtle points of the movie. I found a copy that was dubbed in English on E-bay. Surprisingly, I didn't have much competition in the bidding department, and got my copy for around $5. I'm amazed; it must..

Pros: High calorie treat with a rather original and entertaining storyline
Cons: Little lasting nutritional value
In the spring of 1993, director Alfonso Arau s film Like Water For Chocolate (Como Agua Para Chocolate) was all the rage, not only in Mexico where it was produced, but throughout the United States as well. It became the highest grossing foreign film ever in the U.S. as of that time. It is a Mexican adult fairy tale that deals with such issues as romance, passion, obsession, revenge, and most especially, culinary magic. Like Water For Chocolate belongs to the tradition of magical realism that has been a strong force in Latin American literature and film for some time. The net result is a film..

Like Water for Chocolate (1992)

Pros: direction, sets, cinematography, interesting story
Cons: characters, sinister undertones to the relationships
Perhaps the best known film from Mexico, Like Water for Chocolate became an international critical and commercial success during the spring of 1993. The film combined romance, cuisine and early twentieth century Mexican culture into a heady brew of magic and eroticism. The story was based on a novel by Laura Esquivel, who also adapted the screenplay. Tita (Lumi Cavazos) is raised by a stern, shrewish widow Elena (Regina Torne) who forbids her to marry. Tita is satisfied with helping servant Nacha (Ada Carrasco) prepare meals, at least until hunky Pedro (Marco Leonardi) shows up. Pedro...

Tragically Beautiful

Pros: universal themes of human nature and love, poetic language, excellent acting
Cons: none
On the good advice of trusted people, I rented the DVD of Like Water for Chocolate. I found it to be a most poignant and beautiful film brimming with the passionate themes of true love and destiny. The version I watched was in Spanish, with English subtitles. The language is poetry in motion, flowing through each scene with the intensity or subtlety of its purpose. The screenplay is very well adapted, and the cast is superb. Like Water for Chocolate tells the story of an amazing woman, Tita. She is bound by a ridiculous family tradition that states the youngest daughter must never marry and...
