This is one of the greatest musicals ever performed and the cast of this edition is especially talented. I was deeply saddened when the play was retired, but at least now I can relieve the music that has been a part of my life since I was a child.
To put it simply, the musical version of "Les Miserables" is one of staggering achievement and destined to be remembered as one of the greatest musicals of all time. The score glows with impressive variations; the haunting lyrics tell a tale of love, mayhem and woe one usually associates with the great Stephen Sondheim. This double cd runs 104 minutes-about half of the entire show. It is not quite as famous as the original London recording, but you do not have to wade through all the Cockney accents in this Broadway recording. The story takes place in France anyway, so no British accents are needed. I saved over ten dollars by buying this cd on ebay!
The cast is outstanding! Versus others, like teh london cast it is a matter of preference for aparticular voice, but even those are excellent in comparision. For this cast it is Frances Rueffle versus Lea Salonga, this Fantine, Randy Graff is excellent versus the redition of the London's Patti Lupone, whom I usually love (in Evita). Colm Wilkinson will always shine as Jean Valjean, as he carried oth productions in UK and Broadway. Judy Kuhn (Chess US) and Michael Ball (Aspects of Love) are stellar members of the cast.
it was very good, came fast! the music brought sweet tears to my eyes as i was engulfed by the music that only a genius could write. The music remined me of rome when the sun rises and the birds sing
I was looking for a recording of the original cast of Les Miserables and found it other places for more than three times the price.
Colm Wilkinson is the actor who played Jean Valjean in this recording which is especially precious to me since I was able to see him sing it live in New York City.
He asks God to bring his son home safe from war and I now have a son at war. I listen to this recording each time I pray for my son to come home and other recordings just aren't the same.
I was delighted to find this recording on Ebay.
The CD was exactly as promised and I am very happy to have it.
Ebay is a great source for finding things where otherwise there would be no connection between what you want and who has it. It makes wonderful connections for people and I thank you.
Best musical in my opinion. Colm Wilkinson and the voice of Eponine are the highlights, but many others are close in the running. I've seen the musical three times and would see it again in a blink. Buy the CD. See the musical.
Les Miserables is a great score, and this production is wonderful. It's the type of music which rings in your ears days later. Listening to this CD, I can place myself in Lincoln Center, and just let the power of the music wash over me.
There are few other musical pieces that warble out the haunting passion and beauty of these Les Mis songs, especially those sung by Colm Wilinson. Victor Hugo would have been proud. G.Wylie
I bought this CD set to replace a damaged one. I wore out my old set that was purchased the year it was put out on CD (took 15 years!). I love it! Definitely a good buy if you like stage musicals!
Les Mis is truly a an experience that evokes every emotion we ever knew we had. One of the finest pieces of writing ever as well as some of the world's greatest singers and actors make the music of Les Miserable an experience. If one has been "blessed" enough to see the performance live you know what I mean.
I love the music & the lyrics. It conveys the despair of the characters as the listener comes to know them. The show moves on and the listener learns of their love, loss, bravery & finally hope. It is a great CD for someone who is interested in "the rest of the story".
I love Les Miserables. It is a great CD, and a very passionate musical. I have read Victor Hugo's book, and loved it too. I fell in love with the movie from playing a medely of it in our school's orcestra. So many people loved the music, that we are doing it for our school's musical next fall. The music is great, and I absolutly love all of their voices. I love many musicals, and Les Mis is my favorite! :)

Pros: There is substance and weight to this score. Excellent addition to any collection.
Cons: You really need to see the staged show in order to understand the full message.
Personal Prologue: Victor Hugo's epic work Les Miserabl s has been a defining influence in my life. After reading the book countless times, seeing every movie version available, and viewing the stage show 3 times, I've wondered why I reach for the original Broadway cast recording by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg again and again as I work on projects, grade student papers, or simply relax with a cup of tea. Some music entertains, other selections relax or energize, but this score provides a rich tapestry of music and message that speaks to my soul and renews my spirit every time I.
