Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite...vive le Bastille Day write-off!

Pros:
Embraces the passion of the French Revolution in a way the English version can't
Cons:
Less character development, at times the music seems weaker
One of the most popular Broadway shows of all time, Les Miserables sprung into our hearts and onto the stage in 1986. But years before this English-language release, the composer-writer team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg pieced together a French-language version of the musical; this version played in Paris in the early eighties. The Original French Concept Album, released in 1988, serves as the best remaining link between the writers' inspiration to create a passionate retelling of the French Revolution and the blockbuster musical we know as "Les Miz". Why does the musical...

Pros:
Has lyrics in booklet! (In French of course)
Cons:
I can't understand those written lyrics...or 99% of the words being sung!

You know the story right? If you don't, here it is in a nutshell. Boublil and Schonberg's Les Miserables premiered in January , 1980 in Paris. It ran for about 12 weeks and closed. The creators did a recording of the show and its original cast and voila, that was that. Until 1982. That is when...

Like It Was Supposed To Be
Review created: 12/19/99

Pros:
Performed in the language it was born in
Cons:
On My Own isn't there....other songs altered (some for the better)
I am big fan of the English version of this musical, and being a french student I couldn't help but pick up a copy of the musical in its original language. I never listen to it in English anymore. There are some distinct differences from the American version of the musical. The instrumentation varies greatly in some parts, not to mention the fact that several of the songs translate into rather different lyrics than those heard on the American stage. Perhaps the most noticeable difference is the absence of that song every girl wants to sing, "On My Own." The replacement, "L'Un Vers L'Autre",...
