A Lesson for Church Schisms on Spirituality & Sexuality
Review created: 04/12/07
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

In this sensitive, yet timely, film, when stereotypes made by straight religious supremacists are being challenged, both religion and being gay are questioned by two young men. As they grow to know each other, they reach greater understanding of what being in love means, regardless of their previously held notions.

The story begins with a bet between friends. That bet triggers a Mormon missionary and a gay partier to rediscover themselves and to become close to each other.

While US denominations were (and still are) factionalizing over equal GLBT religious, spiritual, and legal human rights, denominations went into deep schisms, it's ironic that a bet brings two religious and gay men together. Perhaps this film could teach such tightly wounds up denominations and churches how to have a respectable dialogue about the issues of spirituality and sexuality!

Latter Days - The Power of Love
Review created: 04/18/08

A real love story. The film has it all: attraction, devotion, inner angst and finally the overcoming of all obstacles separating our lovely couple. The story line is just busy enough, the characters appealing, the plot progresses and the climax is satisfying. The ending is perfect.

Latter Days is an all to true story of what happens when a sheltered boy hits the real world. Wether the issue is sexuality or many other aspects of life, those of us that have been sheltered usually have trouble finding ourselves. This movie takes an honest look at the shallowness of a gay man and the unforgiving nature of a religious family. It presents a very real portrayal of both.

This movie is a Gem and NOT a "gay" Movie
Review created: 10/22/06

Only a person of the talent who brought us “Sweet Home Alabama”, and who was a Mormon Missionary as a young man, could bring us this movie. His talent and insight merges into his writing and directing a movie that would be nominated for an Oscar under different societal circumstances.

It eventually becomes a love story, but along the way it portrays accurately both young, promiscuous gay men and the gamut of Mormon Missionaries, some of whom can be jerks, while most are sweet, sincere young men who feel a responsibility to help people in need or those who are in emotional crisis.

This is a tender, yet serious movie, while also providing insight to the fact that the lives of gays in our society are not all sex and partying envied (mostly by homophobic men), as well as debunking the theory that gays are a threat to family values and our traditional family structure.

It also provides examples and hope that young flaky, promiscuous gay men can become grounded and responsible, as well as bigoted straight men being capable of the occasional good deed when their inner human being emerges.

Mary Kay Place delivers a wonderful performance as the LDS Missionary’s mother between them after the young man has been sent home from his Mission in disgrace, and summarily ex-communicated by his father the Stake President (Regional Manager in “gentile” terms), for simply kissing a man. The scene is powerful and worth watching the movie in itself.

The glue that holds this movie together, in my opinion, is Jacqueline Bisset’s amazing performance as the owner of a restaurant where the gay characters are employed, and her treatment of them as if they were her own family. She delivers a remarkable performance as a middle age lady with class and compassion for others while running a tight ship providing a positive role model for them.

Being LDS, but now voluntarily “inactive”, I can attest this film does NOT vilify or slander the Mormon Church. It merely presents but one conflict inherent in the current application of its Doctrine on many issues which haunt inactive members, resulting in their becoming “Jack Mormons”.

Towards the end of the movie, there is a plot twist reminiscent of the classic film “Laura” from the late 1940’s. Skipping this film for moral or political reasons will be your loss!

A true reflection of a gay Mormon Missionary

The reason why I can say that this is a true reflection of a gay Mormon Missionary is because I once was one as well. This movie moved me to the core and it is such a beautiful and inspriring love story! It is well acted and very artistic to look at.
Have a look at this film and discover for yourself the reason why this film has the Mormon church outraged (nothing about the Mormons in this film is untrue) and Movielovers intrigued.

I saw this movie on IFC. The subject matter interested me. The movie was a very good depiction of how alternative lifestyles are considered a taboo to many many people; especially by many religious sects. The way the mormon boy was treated by his family and church showed the extreme intolerance and ignorance of society toward homosexuality. I think in many ways it also shows the hipocracy in our society. I read a statement made by a politician once that the only way he would not get elected is if he was caught in bed with a dead girl or live boy. If he was caught in bed with a live girl in society eyes it would have been forgivable and excusable, although he was a married man.

There were some graphic scenes in the movie, that could have been left out but I was not offended by the scenes. Overall I like the movie. I bought the DVD because I wanted to watch the movie again and share it with my friends.

I bought Latter Days Dvd after seeing part of it on t.v. The only place I found it was on EBay. I was able to relate to Aaron in the movie coming from a religious family myself. I enjoyed all the inter-relations within the film. It was very realistic

This was my second copy of this movie to buy. I liked it so much I bought it as a gift for one of my friends. It is very well acted and you can't help but fall in love with Steve Sandvoss in the role of Aaron. This is a great screenplay from the same writer that wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" (C.Jay Cox). If you like movies that make you laugh and cry, then you'll love this one. Anybody that has dealt with the conflict of religious views and their sexuality will particularly relate and enjoy this story. If only there were enough real-life Aarons for all of us!
I will always be interested in the future projects of Steve Sandvoss And C.Jay Cox due to my admiration of this movie. There is plenty of eye candy and skin to make a great movie even nicer. You can't please everybody but this one comes close. All of my friends love it.

This is an absolutely great movie, with a good story and cast. Unlike some gay movies, this one is Hollywood quality. It follows an openly gay and promiscuous young man who makes a bet with his restaurant co-workers that he can score with one of the traveling Mormons living in the apartment complex next to him. Meanwhile, the young Mormon he targets has sexual identity issues of his own. 'Nuff said!!
