Ladykillers (2004, VHS)

The Ladykillers - Coens and Tom Hanks pulled our chains here

Pros:
There were some creative and funny moments.

Cons:
Overall, this was a lame movie that travled the low road.

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (AKA The Coen Brothers) decide to remake a quirky 1955 British comedy and enlist Tom Hanks to play the lead. This is a case where big names get a little too big for their britches. It s kind of like George Bush and John Kerry getting TV time. You know these guys are not really very good at public speaking and only play in prime time because they are running for President. Bush can t keep a train of thought, and his jokes are lame. Kerry is stiff as a stiff, and his Votox seems to be wearing off (which is probably better than Dole and his Viagra). That s how this movie.

  A few funny moments don't make a movie ~ The Ladykillers (2004)

Pros:
Tom Hanks is way creepy; a few funny moments; the music

Cons:
Lack of chemistry; stereotyped characters

Being fans of the Coen brothers, the boy and I had both been interested in seeing The Ladykillers when it was released in the theaters. With all the negative reviews and bad publicity it got, we never went out of our way to see it, and before we knew it, it was released on DVD. Fast forward a few months, add some more negative reviews and bad publicity, and last weekend we couldn t even find it on our local video store s New Release shelves. After actively searching for it, and finding it in the bargain video section, we truly wondered just how bad it was going to be. First of all, know that..

The LadyKillers - Should have died upon conception

Pros:
The music and cinematography are top-notch

Cons:
everything else.

Can someone please tell me what was the point of this movie? This movie is so painfully unfunny; I would undertake a full day of dental work without Novocain, before I let myself undergo this torture again. Not one of the characters, with the exception of Irma P. Hall, as landlady, Marva Munson is even remotely interesting. Matter of fact, if they d all gotten blown up prior to the end of this unintended disaster, I think everybody watching it would have applauded. As it stands, I wanted to burn a Tom Hanks figurine in effigy. Tom Hanks (who plays a character portrayed by Alec Guiness in the..

Never Trust A Man With a Really Wierd Hair Do

Pros:
The Muson Character

Cons:
Cheap jokes

Somehow I knew when I saw the advertisements for this movie that I was not going to like it all that much. Just the way Tom Hanks talked and the stupid hair dew that he had. What was that all about? But when I needed something to watch this was one of the newest available and I was in the mood for a comedy so I went ahead and rented the movie. After all I normally think that Hanks is an excellent actor so how bad could the movie be. Apparently this movie is a re-make of a movie that was done in 1955 starring Alec Guinness and a very young Peter Sellers. I don t have first hand knowledge of...

  Good as Guinness
Review created: 04/23/04

Pros:
This is a great, even better, remake of a great original.

Cons:
Language, plus useless first word of the title. (Hey, I'm grabbing at straws here.)

If there is a film (or book) title that begins with "The" and that can't be improved by removing the word, it's rare. Now that we have my negative criticism out of the way, we can concentrate on this film's positive qualities, which are numerous and manifold. As you no doubt know, this is a remake of the 1955 classic, starring Alec Guinness, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellars (a very early appearance), and others. For starters, I urge (urge, urge) you to see the Guinness film before you see the new version not in order to make invidious comparisons, but in order to appreciate what an amazing...
