Lady Madonna and its' B-side, The Inner Light, provide an interesting example of how The Beatles could make opposing social, political or religious commentary within the confines of a single record. The themes of both songs deal with religion, but the message of each song is diametrically opposed to that of the other. How did The Beatles do this and get away with it? The answer is simple--because they COULD! It has to be said: "Lady Madonna" was more a contractual obligation than a genuine creative statement. The Beatles hadn't put out any new music since Christmas of 1967, and they had postponed the recording of a new album until the summer of '68 in order to travel to India for a few months and learn the secrets of the Universe at the feet of the Maharishi (it didn't take). They owed EMI/Parlophone another single before they could launch their own Apple Records, and they needed to put out a new 45 RPM in order to keep their name on the charts in the interim (and generate a bit of cash to help...
