I saw this film at a sneak preview and left half way through, that's how bad I thought it was. Cottillard's performance is indeed terrific but at no point during the film does it become clear why Edith Piaf was either great or interesting. She merely comes across as an extremely obnoxious person - okay, one who could sing but that's it. And it was the already mentioned plot-holes that prompted me to go home during intermission. Friends assured me the next day that I had missed nothing. And I should point out that my judgement has nothing to do with this being a French film, on the contrary. But they could've honoured their legendary Piaf with a better script.
La Vie En Rose was a spectacular film. Totally absorbing, and superbly acted! I now see why Marion Cotillard won the OSCAR. I had not seen the movie before the awards and wondered what it was all about. It's a rare thing in movies these days to see actresses of this calibre and I am grateful my curiosity made me buy and view this film.
i did not expect it to make me feel any certain way. everyone i spoke to said they were crying but i simply did not really connect with the main char. although she did a hell of a job.
Whenever I want a DVD I look on Ebay first. How many times does one look at a DVD movie. I may look at one once and then again sometime later and perhaps another time with someone. Total 3 times at the most. Why buy brand new in the stores and pay so much when I can get a used DVD (by used I mean looked at a the most 3 times) for so much less. I have never been disappointed with any of the DVDs I have purchased from the reliable sellers who describe their articles as acturately as possible. They, too, do not want to get any poor ratings so they tell you what you will be getting. I shall keep buy from Ebay.
I bought the DVD for my mom who left France as a teenager and is now 87 years young, but we grew up listening and knowing who Edith Piaf was so when I had the chance to buy this I knew I had to. Mom enjoyed it immensely and even got to take a refresher course on her French. It was definitely worth it.
I never received the DVD from the seller through Ebay and wound up buying it elsewhere. However I had to comment on one of the best films I've seen all year. I believe the actress that portrayed Edith Piaf won an academy award and it was well deserved. To overcome all the negatives in Ms. Piaf's life to sing such beautiful music is truly amazing.
I never received the DVD, La Vie En Rose from the seller and it's currently being investigated by Discover Card. Nor have I heard anything from the seller to whom I sent a message some time ago. I would say they either don't have their act together or they are a scam seller.
I was amazed by the actress' transformation into Piaf! She was so credible and France was so "gritty." Read her biography some years ago and although the movie didn't have all her loves, etc., it certainly caught the essence of her painful life. No wonder the star won an Oscar! I recommend it highly.
I could not find this locally. Very please with quality and price. I didn't mean to order two but I pressed the wrong button. Sorry it took so long to respond.
This is a great movie...in French, of course. However, subtitles are available for those who don't speak French. The actress who plays Edith Piaf won the Academy Award for best actress this year for her performance. Well deserved. There was no literature to read background on the movie, but there is extra footage at the end about the filming of "La Vie En Rose."
Incredible portrayal by Clotillard! Everything I expected and more! Told in flashbacks that can be very intense! Lovely music and a very wonderful portrayal of Piaf's difficult life from childhood till her death. Edith Piaf fans should not miss this!
A wonderful film with fantastic music. An emotional adventure that keeps you riveted to the screen. Marion Cotillard is a great actress. She does an excellent job. It almost seems like she is the reincarnation of Edith Piaf. The wardrobe, the sets and the camera work really made me feel like I had traveled back in time. I highly recommend this movie.
Powerful acting! This is an awesome movie about the life of a larger than life, internationally acclaimed, immensely talented and a very sad, troubled woman. This is the extraordinary life of a very ordinary woman who loved life, for whom her songs WERE life, and whose only love was taken away from her tragically. The film has many well known and loved Piaf songs. It has English subtitles, but if you understand French, even better. This movie will touch you!
This movie is an emotional tour de force, wonderfully directed and also driven by a sensitive and skillfull actress and cast. With subtitles, even if you do not understand the french language you will be enthralled by this movie. If you do not know who the "little sparrow" was you will be made aware of the talent and passion of this tremendous international star. A cinematic emotional roller coaster.
movie I've seen in a long time.I love this movie I could not wait for it to come out on dvd so I could watch it again and share it with friend and family.LOVE THIS MOVIE
Its hard to out in words how I was impacted by this film. The actrees who portrayed Edita Piaf transformed herself magnificently, and the script was creative and beautiful. There were holes in her story that were brought together at the end. I saw the movie 3x and encouraged my teenage son and his friends to see the film.
They also loved the film. It was beautiful, and haunting, sad, joyful and lovely. Plz see this film. You will not be disappointed!
