Excellent author. Good writing, but the choice of theme here doesn't accommodate his best talents. Read it anyway and wait for the next one.

Unlike the previous reviewer, I found this book to be quite bad. The characters seemed to be very wooden and shallow. They had no depth. The male and female primary characters instantly fall in love for no reason. Then they don't do anything but talk, but their dialog is so stilted and false. The plot is so laden with exposition, it's just deadly dull. Carr has a somewhat dated and purple writing style that worked well for "The Alienist" and its sequel but not here. This is just bad science fiction.

I love Killing Time by Caleb Carr. It is a wonderful exciting book full of twists and turns..it keeps you guessing and trying to figure out how the world is really working. Mr. Carr is a truly wonderful auther whos charcters are brought to life with his writing style. Killing time was so diffrent from his other writing yet his style of bringing life to the people portrayed was excelant. this purchase was acually a rebuy of the book...my original copy was burned in a house fire. I am very happy it was offerd for auction on E-Bay
