I must admit I am only half way through this epic series on PBS, and i am absolutely amazed at the brilliance of Ken Burns at the connection he makes between the story tellers(family and relatives) and the viewer. I had two grandfathers in WWII, and never had the chance to talk about it with them, even though it is an american based documentary it definately gives you a wide angled perspective of the world war in general. If you have a heart for veterans or are a relative of a veteran, this is a must see!!It brings you right into the homes of these soldiers and their sacrifices. It's worth every penny.

  The best WWII documentary

This is the best of the best. Seeing it thru the eyes of the veterans themselves and/or their relatives gives a perspective of WWII. I lost a cousin at Pearl Harbor. He was on a battleship. Another cousin was at D-day. His buddy walking next to him stepped on a mine. My cousin suffered masive shrapnel wounds--Never really recovered. mentally or physically. I remember Dec 7th. I remember buying US savings STAMPS at school with my allowance to help the war effort.(these stamps were like 25 cents.) After you collected so many stamps you would convert it into a $25.00 savings bond. ALL of my classmates bought stamps with their allowance. On Saturday we would go around town with our little red wagons collecting paper, metal etc for the war effort.
We gave what we could, a little money, and a LOT OF TIME. We could have been playing, baseball, ice skating etc. but our "Boys" needed us. God bless them all

The War (2007 6 DVD Set) -- Ken Burns
Review created: 07/20/08

If you like war documentary's Ken Burns does a great job with "The War". It is an account of WW II from 1941 to 1945. There a number of great personal stories from veterans along with excellent real life footage to support the it. Maps showing movements during the war are also very helpful. The film is not an action thriller, but rather shows the personal side of war. It shows the devastation war has on the individual lives of the people in the action and back home.
Very well done and worth the purchase.

different pages!!! And a lot of these offers are FREE trials with
nothing else to buy...No commitments!!!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster
online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would
regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use
them to get a free PS3 System or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 30 day
free trial and it never cost me a penny and I received credit for it the
same day). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you.
After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 8-13 people
(depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link
(just post the same thing as I have on eBay, and you'll get your
referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your PS3 System or your selected item for free, I
chose the PS3 80gb System. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these
companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all

  War on nerves
Review created: 07/09/08

Sound effects from 'Band of Brothers', every MG sounds the same.4 engined bombers sound like little scout planes.
For all the research and attempt at unseen footage, why were so many of the same bits of footage repeated?
A truly hard out look at what it was like for them who lived in those times.
If all the combat and history lessons had been left out and the series focused on just the people and their stories it would have been easier to digest.

I saw this series on PBS when it originally aired and thought it was excellent - we didn't want to miss a minute of it. I purchased the DVD set for a gift for my father. He lived through WWII and missed much of the series when it aired. He was very happy to receive this gift and says it is the best documentary of the war he's seen.

Must have for those needing information about WW II
Review created: 06/29/08

I lost my father prior to being born. Any source of information about this time is a treasure to me. I have looked for as much about the 8th Air Force as I can possibly find.
This visual synopsis draws all if that information into a tight bundle to remind all of us as to why men such as my father paid the ultimate price so that we today might enjoy the lives we have.

Excellent, but not for the faint hearted or weak mind!
Review created: 06/18/08

I really have enjoyed the videos. However, I must admit I can only watch about 2 hours or so and then must have some time as they can be troubling and are very strong and graphic. They were put together with excellent skill. I can only imagine the terrible things that so many people went through because of this war and because of the baseness and lack of dignity many inflicted on others. I know to well that people are not willing to learn from history and fear that this saga in some way will repeat itself again. I hope not in my lifetime, not in my country and definitely not in my family. A wonderful production but not for the faint of heart or weak.

This a Story of four tows in the US. Were selected individual are the story. I question the towns. Were you could pick more better. Maybe there be another War. Baseball and the Civil War are Burns better works. But for the Old Vet. This will give you flash backs. The ending was heart breaking, even the hardest nail would bent with it. If you have a stronge interest in WW II add this one to your collection

  Ken Burns - The War
Review created: 05/15/08
by:

I have seen "a lot" of documentaries and specials about, the Greatest Generation, and the struggles of WWII.
This one, delves deeper into the cost of the war at home, with a story line that threads through our history, domestically and overseas.
Despite being "Long and Indepth" (15 hours/ 7 parts) it never seemed long, boring, or forced. Wide ranging and relevant, even today. (those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it)
Tells the story of four small towns and the changes experienced during the wartime buildup. Mobile Alabama, Sacramento California, Waterbury Conneticut, and Luverne Minnesota. These four towns tell the story of a whole generation
of Americans.
A MUST SEE for sure.
A+

  GREAT DVD- Graphic
Review created: 05/07/08
by:

This flim by Ken Burns finally that made it into the main stream press, and available to the public is a flim that should have been shown 10 or 20 years ago! The flim is graphic, but at lease it tells of what really happened in WWII! I just wish that more flimmakers, like Ken Burns would take the oppturnity to take a "leap into the un-known" and tell the whole true about our history!

  Short but complete
Review created: 04/28/08

I remember the post war years, the automobiles and the music. This was not for me rather for my husband's father who served in the Pacific theater in the Navy. I purchased another DVD set of "The War" for my daughter who serves on the USS Enterprise of the Atlantic fleet and she just returned from serving in the Persian Gulf. There are no words or catchy phrases that can pay enough tribute to the Armed Forces of the United States of America. The story of the war is a marvelous tapestry woven from the threads of so many lives. Thank you to Ken Burns!

  Ken Burns-The War
Review created: 04/27/08

I had read an interview with Ken Burns during which he said this was his best production to date. I decided to order the series through Netflix, but was so impressed midway through the first few DVDs that I decided to just order a copy for my archives. It also was most interesting to me because I and my father grew up in one of the towns (Sacramento, CA) which was highlighted throughout the films. My father graduated from college in the Spring of 1942 and enlisted as an officer in the Navy in August 1942, serviced in the Pacific.
A truly riveting film, the interviews are inspirational and generate so much more examination of the human condition during wartime. I was most impressed by the soundtrack, which was edited so realistically to show the "closeness" and spontaneous nature of battle. I recommend this show highly for our young people as a much needed educational tool.
