I must admit I am only half way through this epic series on PBS, and i am absolutely amazed at the brilliance of Ken Burns at the connection he makes between the story tellers(family and relatives) and the viewer. I had two grandfathers in WWII, and never had the chance to talk about it with them, even though it is an american based documentary it definately gives you a wide angled perspective of the world war in general. If you have a heart for veterans or are a relative of a veteran, this is a must see!!It brings you right into the homes of these soldiers and their sacrifices. It's worth every penny.
This is the best of the best. Seeing it thru the eyes of the veterans themselves and/or their relatives gives a perspective of WWII. I lost a cousin at Pearl Harbor. He was on a battleship. Another cousin was at D-day. His buddy walking next to him stepped on a mine. My cousin suffered masive shrapnel wounds--Never really recovered. mentally or physically. I remember Dec 7th. I remember buying US savings STAMPS at school with my allowance to help the war effort.(these stamps were like 25 cents.) After you collected so many stamps you would convert it into a $25.00 savings bond. ALL of my classmates bought stamps with their allowance. On Saturday we would go around town with our little red wagons collecting paper, metal etc for the war effort. We gave what we could, a little money, and a LOT OF TIME. We could have been playing, baseball, ice skating etc. but our "Boys" needed us. God bless them all
I lost my father prior to being born. Any source of information about this time is a treasure to me. I have looked for as much about the 8th Air Force as I can possibly find. This visual synopsis draws all if that information into a tight bundle to remind all of us as to why men such as my father paid the ultimate price so that we today might enjoy the lives we have.
I really have enjoyed the videos. However, I must admit I can only watch about 2 hours or so and then must have some time as they can be troubling and are very strong and graphic. They were put together with excellent skill. I can only imagine the terrible things that so many people went through because of this war and because of the baseness and lack of dignity many inflicted on others. I know to well that people are not willing to learn from history and fear that this saga in some way will repeat itself again. I hope not in my lifetime, not in my country and definitely not in my family. A wonderful production but not for the faint of heart or weak.
Love this video. The price was really, really good. I would rather pay $43 on ebay rather than $120 in the store for a brand new DVD. What a buy. The transaction was outstanding.
very Informative and insiteful to what faimlies back home as well as the solders themselves went through togive the US populations the freedom's they enjoy
This a Story of four tows in the US. Were selected individual are the story. I question the towns. Were you could pick more better. Maybe there be another War. Baseball and the Civil War are Burns better works. But for the Old Vet. This will give you flash backs. The ending was heart breaking, even the hardest nail would bent with it. If you have a stronge interest in WW II add this one to your collection
I bought the series because my father-in-law was in the Bataan Death March and a prisoner of war for 3 1/2 years. It is a wonderful series. We recieved great service and a great buy on the series.
I have seen "a lot" of documentaries and specials about, the Greatest Generation, and the struggles of WWII. This one, delves deeper into the cost of the war at home, with a story line that threads through our history, domestically and overseas. Despite being "Long and Indepth" (15 hours/ 7 parts) it never seemed long, boring, or forced. Wide ranging and relevant, even today. (those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it) Tells the story of four small towns and the changes experienced during the wartime buildup. Mobile Alabama, Sacramento California, Waterbury Conneticut, and Luverne Minnesota. These four towns tell the story of a whole generation of Americans. A MUST SEE for sure. A+
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it. As a WW II buff I have watched many movies, tapes,cd's,etc about WW II. I found this very enlightning. Great insight. My favorite movies are 1)Wake IS, 2)Sands of Iwo Jima, 3)Guadacanal Diary,4) The Longest Day, 5) A Bridge Too Far. Add this one.
I am a W-W II history buff, and I think this is a wonderful DVD it has great original footage from the 40's . It tell the story of how the war effected 4 towns in america from 1941 to 1945. I recomend this Dvd to anyone who is interested in W-W II history !
This flim by Ken Burns finally that made it into the main stream press, and available to the public is a flim that should have been shown 10 or 20 years ago! The flim is graphic, but at lease it tells of what really happened in WWII! I just wish that more flimmakers, like Ken Burns would take the oppturnity to take a "leap into the un-known" and tell the whole true about our history!
I bought this DVD collection because I think everyone who lives in this country not forgot the sacrifices that the men and women made who fought in WW II. Ken Burns did a great job. I saw this first on PBS and I knew that I had to have the DVD for my DVD collection.
Excellent coverage of WWII from the perspective of the people and family's that lived during those days. Great vintage film clips, very few re-runs from other films, Perilous Journey WWII in color, America in the 40's. Excellent film for the WWII buff.
Really brings home the difficulties of that most difficult war. Makes one rethink about what is important in life. Gives a background to politics today as well.
The War is another excellent documentary by Ken Burns. This heart-wrenching story tells the amazing journey of four American towns, and their soldiers. I would recommend this video to anyone who has an interest in American history.
I remember the post war years, the automobiles and the music. This was not for me rather for my husband's father who served in the Pacific theater in the Navy. I purchased another DVD set of "The War" for my daughter who serves on the USS Enterprise of the Atlantic fleet and she just returned from serving in the Persian Gulf. There are no words or catchy phrases that can pay enough tribute to the Armed Forces of the United States of America. The story of the war is a marvelous tapestry woven from the threads of so many lives. Thank you to Ken Burns!
A great work that vividly shows the horrors of the War and and shows the impact it had at home...Some of the video I don't believe has been shown to public before... Great pictures of Hitler's death camps.....
I had read an interview with Ken Burns during which he said this was his best production to date. I decided to order the series through Netflix, but was so impressed midway through the first few DVDs that I decided to just order a copy for my archives. It also was most interesting to me because I and my father grew up in one of the towns (Sacramento, CA) which was highlighted throughout the films. My father graduated from college in the Spring of 1942 and enlisted as an officer in the Navy in August 1942, serviced in the Pacific. A truly riveting film, the interviews are inspirational and generate so much more examination of the human condition during wartime. I was most impressed by the soundtrack, which was edited so realistically to show the "closeness" and spontaneous nature of battle. I recommend this show highly for our young people as a much needed educational tool.
Great price for a new, sealed DVD box set. Great experience, great seller!! Received item fast and in great condition, no problems. Will check out other products since the prices are very reasonable!!
Ken Burns - The War. He goes so in depth on everything he does and this is no exception. If you are interested in World War 2 or think you know a lot about it, I am sure you will learn something new. Probably a lot. Great set, you'll love it.
THIS IS ONE OF THE PREMIER DOCUMENTARIES OF ALL TIME FOR THIS SUBJECT MATTER! THE BASIS FOR THIS SERIES IS "THE WAR" AS SEEN THRU THE EYES OF THOSE THAT ACTUALLY PARTICIPATED IN ITS CONDUCT. EYE WITNESS ACCOUNTS ARE BY FAR THE MOST ACCURATE AND INTERESTING ACCOUNTS IN WHICH TO BASE A DOCUMENTARY ON AND THIS SERIES HAS GONE TO GREAT LENGTHS TO BRING US THESE TYPES OF ACCOUNTS/FACTS.
My father was in World War Two and he always encouraged me to learn history so we did not re-live it. He passed in 99 but I know this documentary by Ken Burns would have been my father's favorite DVD sets. It is the most comprehensive and educational series on WWII I have ever seen. I have become a large Ken Burns fan and will be looking to purchase his DVD series on the Civil War as well. I highly recommend this series. You will not be disappointed. It is loaded with first hand interviews and old actual footage. It is a complete history lesson about WWII in a 6 DVD set.
The best documentary of WWII ever produced! This is the only documentary than involves you with the private feelings of the family and towns to a really get a feeling of what these families were going through. The individual fighting the war covered very personally. This film really hits the soul of those watching it to be thankful for their sacrifices and how they save the world. I bought this because I could not view it due to the time of night it played but I also knew this was a film that I must buy and keep as I collect WWII documentaries. They are my way of escaping the current times that our nation and its people are in.
