About the Karate Kid - One of the best 80s movies and Sports movies

The Karate Kid is about a teenage boy, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), who moves with his mother from Newark, New Jersey to Reseda, California, in the San Fernando Valley district of L.A.. The handyman of their apartment building is a kindly and humble Okinawan immigrant named Mr. Kesuke Miyagi (Pat Morita).

The last night of summer, Daniel and his new friends, including Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), are at the beach, when Ali's ex-boyfriend Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and his friends, pull up on motorbikes. Johnny and Ali begin arguing, and Ali blasts a radio. Angered, Johnny throws the radio to the ground. Daniel moves to pick it up, and ignores Johnny's warning not to get involved. Soon Daniel and Johnny fight, but Daniel loses. Unwittingly, Daniel has made an enemy of one of Cobra Kai karate dojo's best students. The Cobra Kai dojo is an arguably over-the-top portrayal of a sadistic, macho, and prideful form of martial arts, perhaps a symbolic representation of the "dark side" of martial arts.

Johnny and his cronies torment Daniel as much as they can. When Daniel retaliates with a prank at a Halloween dance (where Johnny is seen rolling what appears to be a marijuana cigarette laced with PCP), he is pursued by Johnny and his friends, who proceed to beat him until he can barely stand. Just then, Mr. Miyagi intervenes and rescues Daniel in a surprising display of karate (stunt work by Fumio Demura). Daniel, upon learning this, asks Mr. Miyagi to be his teacher (sensei).

With some persuasion, Miyagi agrees to accompany Daniel to confront the sensei of the Cobra Kai dojo and insist that he tell his students to stop their harassment of Daniel. However, the sensei, John Kreese (Martin Kove), is a vicious fighter (later revealed in the sequels as a Vietnam Veteran) who regularly barks out condemnations of mercy or restraint. To settle the matter, Miyagi announces Daniel will enter a Valley-wide tournament where Cobra Kai students can fight Daniel on equal terms. Miyagi also requests that Johnny and his friends stop bullying Daniel in the interim while the boy is trained. Kreese assents and orders his students to leave Daniel alone, but threatens that if Daniel does not appear at the tournament, the harassment will resume and Miyagi himself will be targeted as well.

Without spoiling the movie's ending, Mr. Miyagi and Daniel experience conflict as Daniel-son struggles with a male authority figure so intent on teaching focus and patience. But Daniel LaRusso's skill and mental toughness are put on the line in the ending karate tournament where Daniel must face the Cobra Kai clan!

  GREAT PRODUCT
Review created: 06/10/08

Great product, higly recommended, bought the NewPhone 74205 three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive phone. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone thanks again! A+++++

  Wax On, Wax Off
Review created: 03/07/08

What more can be said of these classic movies (I refer of course to the first three only)? The Karate Kid movies are packed full of comedy, wisdom, and 1980's style martial arts. Mr. Miyagi is up there with Yoda on the wisdom chart! "Never choose passion over principle....even if you win, you lose!"

The kids just think that it is a cool set and they watch it all the time. Its great for the whole family. It has a wounderful point to the kids that fighting is not always the way to go.

Karate Kid Collection Box Set (2005, DVD Set)
Review created: 02/24/08

An excellent way to preserve a movie treasure from the 80's and early 90's which inspired more than one generation to embrace the path of Budo through the practice of karate, not just for looks or fitness but also as an excellent way to learn discipline, self-control, increase awareness and self-esteem... A great movie to get the young ones initiated in the way of Karate, stop reading, start watching and remember: Lots of; "Wax on, wax off, breath in and breath out, Daniel San..."

Karate Kid Box Set....A Great, Inspirational gift!
Review created: 02/07/08
by:

I have a young family friend who happens to be enrolled in karate classes. I was told he also loves karate movies, so I thought a boxed set of all the 'Karate Kid' movies would be a great find- originally, I had no idea that something like this was even available for purchase. I was impressed with the price and value for my money. I watched a couple of the movies with my friend, and was instantly transported back in time! I was very much inspired by the continuous messages of determination, believing in one's self, dedication and devotion to dreams, no matter how big or small. This boxed set is great for people of all ages, and my friend loved it (as a belated Christmas gift.) I would highly recommend it to others.

  Karate Kid Collection Box Set(2005,DVD)
Review created: 02/04/08

Wow what a great buy on E-bay! A few years ago when my children were younger, these Karate Kid movies were very popular.Who would have thought 16 plus years later my grandson ,a Karate student, would be wanting these same DVD's. I was very nervous waiting on the winning bid of this collection.I was ready to bid no matter what to get thes for him for Christmas. He played the first DVD Christmas day and followed up watching them all. He loves them.We all enjoyed re-watching them too. I love the whole story line behind these well written and directed stories. There are many life lessons in this collection to help many young teen cope with challenges they face daily. This is done in a way for them to relate to their own life and help guide them into right choices. Kids(young) people need more DVD's like these. Very worth the price and watching.Everyone should buy or rent this collection and see for themself how great they are. Thank You

Awesome DVD Set of the Karate Kid films
Review created: 01/09/08
by:

I bought this for my son, who is 9, because he is in Karate lessons for 3 years now and is a current Red belt and Junior Leader at the studio. He is understanding the importance behind karate and why he is there to learn. These movies help reinstate what Master Cannon is teaching to the youth. Karate is not for fighting to win, karate is not used to pick fights, karate is not who is the strongest physically but who had the connection between body mind and spirit and knowing when to use and when not to use karate. THese movies are great for the whole family and I believe will be around forever as classics and great actors. I loved these movies as a kid as well. These movies were great to get my son for Christmas. He loves to watch them often.

Excellent Box Set for any Karate Student
Review created: 09/06/07
by:

The Karate Kid Collection is a must have for any karate student who likes traditional karate. The positive messages that Mr. Myagi reinforces in Daniel are so true to the traditional style of karate. I love the way he teaches with discipline and care. I also love the 80's feel of the movies as well, especially the first one. Even if you aren't into karate but love a good story line, having the karate kid set makes it nice to watch as each movie leads into the other, with the exception of the next karate kid with Hillary Swank (but it's still a great movie).

Great Movies - good for kids to watch
Review created: 09/04/07
by:

I loved all the movies. The adults can watch with their kids and enjoy the morals and lessons behind the movies. It was exciting, and after watching it, you will even quote parts of the movies. The movie with the girl in it, was okay. Seemed like it was missing something, but is a great movie for girls to watch, to know they can conquer and win too!

I grew up with these movies and got them for my boys, who have been practicing their Karate Kid Black Belt on everything in the house, including themselves. The movies are good and arrived in great condition. These are good movies for children to teach them of honor, truth and right from wrong.

Karate Kid Collection Box Set (2005, DVD)
Review created: 01/03/07

I finally found an older movie that my 9 and 11 year old kids enjoyed as much as I did... With today's special effects and action, it is hard to find an older movie that kids will enjoy. This is that set.

We watched all 4 movies and they brough enjoyment to all.

  A can't-miss classic
Review created: 09/05/06

These movies are great to watch for the first time or the fiftieth time. The DVDs however came in small, flimsy cases that could potentially bend or break the DVD so be careful!
