  Joe Kidd
Review created: 12/21/06

This is another Clint Eastwood flick from the '70's that doesn't come to mind
immediately, when thinking of his body of work.
I like the film because it has a good blend of action and humor. The way in
which Joe deals with Lamar (Don Stroud),for example,is a good case in point.
Maybe not a classic movie like 'High Noon'....BUT it does capture on film
a time when the western was fighting like hell to try & make a comeback in
popularity.
Thanks for reading my review.

Joe Kidd : Not a Fistful of Leone
Review created: 08/10/04
by: ChrisJarmick -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Duvall, some memorable shots and only 86 minutes long.

Cons:
Un-inspired, predictable revisionist western. Not Leone.

Clint Eastwood nova-hot off Dirty Harry decided to work with director John (Magnificent Seven) Sturges and an Elmore Leonard script, Americanizing Sergio Leone with another revisionist Western. The film s script is minimalist, with Eastwood breathing a few lines here and there as he becomes a walking clich of his former Fistful Trilogy self. When we first meet Joe Kidd (Eastwood) he s in Jail sleeping one off. Wealthy land-owner Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall liked playing guys named Frank) and the nearly milquetoast sheriff Mitchell (Gregory Walcott) try to enlist Kidd (who s an expert tracker).

Pros:
Passable story; great scenery; Clint Easwood; Robert Duvall; Don Stroud's comic over-acting.

Cons:
Slow to get going; no real surprises; and everybody's way too clean.

Just another vehicle for Dirty Harry in the west? Well, not quite. This time round, Clint plays the title role an individualist, of course, and one with a sense of justice not unlike Dirty Harry; where Joe Kidd differs is that he has no truck with the law and prefers the hunter s life on the range. Which, in turn, causes him to wind up in jail because, in the opener, we find Joe in jail having been charged with hunting deer on reservation land. After being summarily fined $10 and deciding to work out the fine in jail instead, the court proceedings are interrupted by a large band of Mexicans...
