A Complicated Love Story
Review created: 05/10/08
by:

I bought this book after borrowing it from the library and reading it. It is a great story about love and how sometimes you have to lose it before you can gain it. The main characters are meant to be together, however because of some past circumstances, they are unable to. The plot makes you wonder if they will ever get past those circumstances and how.
The story keeps you wondering who the heroine will end up with and is so good you won't want to put it down until you get to the end. There are some points where the storyline gets slightly boring. When it gets that way, I recommend skipping ahead, I don't think you will miss much.
I love how in the end true love prevails, even when one of the main characters pays a price for what he's done. It's amazing to me how two people, who some wouldn't consider pretty at all, could become beautiful to each other.
Overall it's a great classic that I am proud to have just added to my small collection of books. I would recommend it to anyone who loves classical stories.

Earth, water, fire and Eyre: JANE EYRE
Review created: 02/11/03
by: wordwalker -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Superb heroine, interlocking anti-hero, Christian world-view, pagan world.

Cons:
Bits of untranslated French, bit of stereotyping, bit of snobbery.

"If all the world hated you and believed you wicked, while your own conscience approved you and absolved you from guilt, you would not be without friends." JANE EYRE portrays the evolution of a consciousness and a conscience, within a Christian framework constantly shaken by pagan notions, and symbols, and themes. In the year 1800 Jane is an uneducated orphan child, miserably treated by relatives, who rouses to anger at a particular injustice and is subsequently punished not only by her cruel Aunt Reed but by her own superstitious terror when she imagines how the ghost of her late uncle might.

Jane Eyre: An Original Gothic Tale

Pros:
Strong protagonist, excellent story, good moral

Cons:
Needs to be discovered by more people

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte (1847) This literary classic is a little bit outside my usual reading material but I have it in my library and just finished reading it. The overall impression I got is it gets better as you go along and finally becomes a real page turner towards the end. Jane Eyre consists of biography, horror, mystery, and fulfillment, all combined in a framework of high romance. Jane Eyre is the story of a young woman who is an orphan and is raised until the age of ten by a widow named Mrs. Reed, who has three children of her own. The four Reeds make Jane's life a difficult...

Jane Eyre - "Still bright on clouds of suffering dim shines that soft, solemn joy"
Review created: 04/15/01
by: Greatpilgrim-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Books

Pros:
bewitching story, heroine, and message

Cons:
how can Jane Eyre have cons?

I tell you I must go! I retorted, roused to something like passion. Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automaton? a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you, and full as much heart! And if God has gifted me with some beauty, and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am..

A Study In Contrasts: 19th Century Heroine Chats With A Feminist And Me
Review created: 10/07/01
by: jankp -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
not the juvenile version, but the real thing; captivating Christian novel

Cons:
couldn't understand her devotion to a cruel, zealous preacher

Introduction to the interview: Since literally thousands of people have criticized this magnificent work of literature (which almost a hundred pages after the story offer in my 1987 Norton Critical Edition) and I do not wish to repeat their praise--or even encourage some students to use my words instead of reading and reviewing the book in their own words, I believe what would be more entertaining and informative, to my readers as well as myself, is a make-believe discussion with heroine Jane Eyre who has time-traveled into the 21st century. To make it even more helpful in distinguishing her..

 Eyre-esistible

Pros:
holds your attention, beautifully constructed sentences , unusual yet endearing heroine

Cons:
the 19th century value system can get annoying for a 21st century reader

Let me just start off by saying that I am the least likely person to enjoy classics. I lack the patience that classics require you to have. And inspite of this failing, I read Jane Eyre and I loved it from the first word. Jane Eyre is quite simply a narrative tale of a young English orphan right from her life with an aunt and cousins she despised , to convent school, to life as a governess. It might sound dull to some people, but believe me when I say that it isn't. There is something about Bronte's style that holds your attention like no one else can. I must admit that when I read Hardy or...
