  My Favorite James Taylor Disc
Review created: 10/28/07

If you are a fan of James Taylor (the REAL JT) then you have to have this disc. It highlights an artist hitting his stride and really getting comfortable in the studio. There is a lot of creativity on this disc with some incredible songs. Everybody knows "Your Smiling Face" but "Secret o' Life" and "If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight" all deserve their time in the sun.

If you are only familiar with James Taylor's hits, then I highly recommend this disc. Shoot, I recommend this regardless!

Reflections of James Taylor's many moods...

Pros:
Some wonderful old songs by James Taylor circa 1977.

Cons:
None, really, other than a couple of songs I don't like as much as others.

I clearly recall my first memories of James Taylor's 1977 album JT. I was five years old and my father was stationed at Mildenhall Air Force Base in England. My three older sisters were teenagers and living at home. One of them was playing JT on a tape deck and I was immediately thunderstruck by a voice I would come to love more and more as the years went by. I distinctly remember the first time I heard If I Keep My Heart Out Of Sight, the last song on this album. At the time, I didn't know it was James Taylor doing the singing. Imagine my surprise when I bought this CD about fifteen years...

Screw Timberlake, This Is The Original "JT"

Pros:
Guys like James Taylor make terms like "easy listening" much easier to enjoy.

Cons:
One skippable song, and it's only two minutes long.

John Mayer famously called him "The Blueprint" during a televised award show, and it's true that James Taylor is the Daddy of male singer-songwriters (in much the same way most female singer-songwriters look up to Joni Mitchell). Armed with an acoustic guitar, confessional lyrics, and that plain-spoken yet emotional voice, Taylor went from being one of the initial signings to The Beatles' Apple label to one of the biggest stars in the universe by the mid Seventies. In the process of achieving his success, he went on to spawn just about every young male singer armed with a guitar that has come.
