Being a fan of underground, foreign or independent films I have heard much about this flick and the controversy surrounding it. Hearing that this movie can be likened to a car wreck (so disturbing you have to look) I decided to purchase it. I would have to say while the movie was disturbing, violent and odd (one of the worst rape scenes I have ever scene) I would have to say I just could not get over the fact that this movie was made for the sake of violence and sex, there was no point or beauty around it no depth of characters, no reason for the movie to be made. Basically the movie is shown from ending to beginning which was intriguing, but fell way short in the end. I believe in cinema disturbing scenes have a place as it is the dark side of humanity however, the dark side should have a reason and this movie had none.
This was an interesting movie. Beginning at the "end" of the story, we move backwards to see how things came to pass as they did. The camera work at the start is, by director's choice, dizzying to the point of giving the viewer motion sickness. I guess he wanted the viewer to feel as unsettled as the characters. The camera eventually becomes stable, until the end of the film when we again are "treated" to a dizzying camera shot that induces motion sickness once again. If you got sick from the hand held camera work in"Cloverfield and "Blair Witch Project" then avoid this at all costs. If you are not so sensitive, and like to be challenged then you may like this movie. The story becomes engrossing as the story unfolds and we get the WHY of earlier scenes. A similar movie would be "Memento", which is a better movie but along the set up of moving backward with the story so we see how things turn out but only as the movie progresses/regresses do we find out how the characters got to the point they were at when the movie began for us. This is an ADULTS ONLY movie due to a very graphic 10 minute rape scene that is excruciatingly painful to watch on so many levels. This scene is one of two very graphic depictions of violence in this film. The other occuring earlier in the movie (but later in the story.)(If you look closely, the two male characters get the WRONG guy!) I am going to recommend this movie but only for those who can tolerate subtitles (it is in French) and who have a strong stomach for not only the camera work but the subject matter. Good performances from everyone involved. Full nudity of several main characters, both male and female. Worth a peak but again, don't eat a heavy meal first!! You have been warned!
I can't even tell you how INCREDIBLY STUPID this movie was and I felt like I completely wasted 10 minutes of my life on TRYING to watch this ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE movie - It makes you say to yourself "How does CRAP like this get made??? - Don't even waste your time - It's NOTHING like "Momento" (which I LOVED, by the way, so don't think I don't know a good movie when I see it!)
Perhaps the most gruesome murder and rape scenes ever filmed in a motion picture. THE BEST! The dvd is MINT! The seller is SECOND TO NONE: FABULOUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! THANKS AGAIN, LOUIS.
Far and away the best film I have seen this year, Gaspar Noé’s harrowing, powerful film is one which etches itself into memory and doesn’t let go. While the film is as shocking as it is made out to be, the film’s largest detriment has been it’s reputation. Far from the worthless sleaze-fest it has been made out to be, it is a tender and at times beautiful study of out baseset emotions/reactions. Every moment rings true, and the backwards sequence makes the film all the more moving when it reaches it’s startling finale. I was glued to my seat, sweating and feeling a tremendous intensity, anger, and sadness I feel from only the best films I see.
i bought Irreversible (2003, DVD) with good condition and excellent service but shipping is average. I am happy to order the product and received with good condition. The owner supplying good product and excellent service but shipping is average.
I bought the movie because I like the "out of chronological order" concept in movies like Pulp Fiction. Being an English speaker, I had to follow along via subtitles, but still was able to keep up. However, Irreversible was a bit too intense at times - two vicious murders, one of them following a brutal rape scene. I think the same message / ending could have been pulled off with alternative tradgedies.
I have nothing against violence or sex in film, but this movie is pretty pointless except to exploit a very graphic rape scene.
The movie goes backward (maybe trying to be artsy and Memento-like) but it just makes everything more confusing. very violent and dark, starts with 2 men being dragged from a gay club. One of them murdered a man inside. Then you go back and discover the reason the guy was murdered and the relationship between the 2 men and a woman.
If you must watch it, then just go chapter by chapter from the end to the begining. But I really do not recommend this film, it is a waste of Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel.
