So happy to be able to replace this CD lost in Katrina. It was just as advertised - great buy and fast service! Takes me back to Broadway. I would buy from them again.

"Into the Woods" - Ms. Peters/Gleason (Tony Winner)

With Into the Woods, songwriter Stephen Sondheim and librettist/director James Lapine retold a group of children's stories an intricate, moving way that worked on many levels. In the show, which opened on Broadway on November 5, 1987, and ran 764 performances before closing on September 3, 1989 (making it Sondheim's most popular work in 25 years), Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel, and other familiar fairy-tale characters, joined by a few newly invented ones, engage in interrelated adventures. Sondheim and Lapine's interpretation is informed by child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim's book "The Uses of Enchantment", and they not only retain some of the gorier aspects of the original tales, but also add adult complexities. Sondheim's score, one of his most tuneful, slyly acknowledges the melodic simplicity of the Walt Disney movie versions of some of these fairy tales, but his lyrics are typically witty and, not infrequently, employ tongue twisters. Song highlights include Cinderella's "On The Steps Of The Palace"; the two versions of "Agony," sung by two princes; and "Hello, Little Girl," sung to Little Red Ridinghood by the wolf. An ensemble cast led by Bernadette Peters (as a witch) navigates those words well. Particularly impressive are Danielle Ferland as Little Red Ridinghood; Robert Westenberg, who plays both the wolf and Cinderella's Prince; and Tony winner Joanna Gleason. Into the Woods succeeded in enchanting children (some of whom, it must be admitted, probably could have left after the deceptive "happy ending" that closed the first act) and adults who understood the grownup references. Recorded at a time when the advent of CDs was expanding the previous length limitations of albums, the original Broadway cast recording used its 69-minute running time to give a good sense of the show as a whole rather than being just a collection of musical highlights. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Bernadette Peters is Such a WITCH!!! (and other reasons to get this CD)
Review created: 07/29/01

Pros:
Great orchestrations, supreme vocals, Sondheim's twisted lyrics and underlying message

Cons:
Some oft-repeated themes get stuck in your head OVER and OVER and OVER...

When Dorothy Gale of Kansas got to Oz, one of the first questions she was asked was, "Are you a Good Witch, or a Bad Witch?" ....and that's how black-and-white (even though it was in the Very Colorful portion of the film) the world was back in 1939. In Hollywood. Stephen Sondheim, through Bernadette Peters, on Track 16 of this album, gives us a third option: neither a Good Witch or a Bad Witch..."I'm not good, I'm not nice, I'm just RIGHT!" And this album, like the excellent play that it comes from, is just that. Right. It's full of excellent performances, but is at times uncomfortable, as it.

  Into Ourselves!

Pros:
Deep psychological allegory hidden in familiar fairy tales, fascinating score

Cons:
You really do need to LISTEN!

It's a mystery to me why this show is so often characterized as a "family" show --- the subject matter has a lot more to do with issues we adults wrestle. I suppose it's because this show, on the surface, is an amalgam of several well-known fairy tales. Many theatre-goers probably suppose they're going to be treated to an evening of Disney-esque "sanitized for your protection" stories woven together by Snow White and Her Singing Bunnies. (She does make an appearance very late in the show, but the singing bunnies are nowhere to be found.) Instead, Sondheim gives us a show that deliberately...
