Schwinn M3 Jogging Stroller: An Honest Review!

We recently purchased a Schwinn Single Jogging Stroller. The stroller is made by Pacific Cycle, one of the largest bicycle distributors in the world. The particular model we purchased did not carry the InSTEP name, but is essentially the same stroller. It seems that Pacific had previously licensed the InSTEP name, but then began manufacturing the InSTEP products themselves. When this happened, they combined their Schwinn stroller line with the InSTEP line, creating the InSTEP Schwinn line.
The M3 is one of several models being discontinued by Pacific. Fortunately, what this means is that the price of the M3 should be going down as they clear them out to make room for newer models. Our M3 was purchased on eBay. We were very fortunate in that we were able to purchase ours for an exceptionally low price. The suggested retail price is about $199.00. Prices on eBay have ranged between about $100 to $220.
The M3 is designed for jogging, but also works very well for those who walk. The 16" bicycle-type tires provide a very smooth ride, even in snow. For those who live in rugged areas, I recommend you pick up 16" thorn resistant inner tubes, and replace the standard tubes. These tubes are available at most any bike shop (or on eBay!). It only takes a couple of minutes each to swap out the tubes. Also be sure to buy a tire pump (I recommend a small bike pump that you can take with you) and a tire gauge. The quick release lever on the front rim makes it very easy to align or re-align the wheel. A bicycle like handle brake is somewhat difficult to adjust, and the way it is set up, is more functional for a left-handed person (at least ours is set up that way). A back foot brake very effectively locks the back tires, but is somewhat difficult to release. Because the front wheel doesn't swivel, forget about turning on a dime! Tight spaces don't work well when turning is necessary.
The handle, while it doesn't adjust, is set higher than most. This is a definite plus for average to tall dads who usually have to bend in order to push a standard stroller. A quick fold lever on the handle does enable easy folding. Unfortunately, when folded, the stroller does not stand up on its own, and is rather awkward as it doesn't stand up even when propped against something. There isn't a latch to hold the folded stroller together, which makes for an awkward situation when trying to carry the stroller on to a bus or to your car trunk. It keeps trying to "unfold" itself. We found that a short bungie cord can be a lifesaver. The stroller is lighter than many standard strollers, a definite plus.
The fabric isn't cushy, but is adequate to carry a child from infancy to about age 4. Plan on bundling the little one in the winter. The stroller doesn't provide any warmth. Optional bugshields and weathershields can be purchased separately. The seat does not have adjusted positions, but rather is either "down" or "up". A strap behind the seat is released to recline. The canopy is adequate. There is a small basket underneath for carrying things, and a parent's caddy by the handle.
Overall, the M3 is a good jogging stroller. Buy it at the right price and it will serve you well. It isn't a Cadillac, but it definitely isn't a Yugo either! The M3 provides a smooth ride on any terrain, is lighter than most, folds easily, and provides an adequate level of comfort for your little one.
