Good movie, but with extra drama
Review created: 09/09/06

Wonderful movie that gives viewers a glimpse into the recovery process following the legal abolition of apartid in south africa. However, the time was tense and the romantic relationship between the reporters was extra drama that was unnecessary and took away from what should have been the main focus of the movie

Not a "feel-good" kinda movie but an extremely important one. How do you rebuild a nation after apartheid, racism, hatred and all the many unspeakable crimes that took place during South Africa's long history? Nelson Mandela's "confess and receive forgiveness" was hard, especially for those who had been wronged yet it was necessary in order heal the nation and move it into the future.
Stellar preformances by Juliet Binoche. She shines as does Samuel L. Jackson.
I don't own a large collection of DVDs, but this is one of the movies that I felt I needed to own because I will return to it many times in the future. The lessons we can learn through it would serve us well if we could just learn them.

Growing up a teenager in Newport, RI, I admit to being largely insulated from the terrible goings-on in South Africa during that time period (1973 -1980). The atrocities taking place in the most southern country on the African continent went largely unnoticed in America until the mid-to-late s despite their sad parallel to the Black American experience in the 100+ years following the Civil War. And I have to admit, with all I know now about Apartheid, I still know very little about the policy of forced racial segregation, torture, brutality, and subjugation. I had hoped to learn more from the.

Pros:
Decent casting, beautiful cinematography

Cons:
Soundtrack & some scenes felt like they were in the wrong order.

I am South African by birth. I was born in Cape Town in the early '80s, and my family moved away in '93 or '94, right before apartheid ended. SA will always have a special place in my heart - the people, the beaches, the sports and the overall environment are all amazing. But when I left, and on the occasions that I've been back,I just have not felt safe. Even now, some 11 years after Mandela got the peace process started, South Africa is still very much a country in pain. In My Country is a movie based in South Africa after the apartheid period has come to an end. It's loosely based upon a...
