Writing as J.D. Robb, Nora Roberts has a found a rare combination in her "Death" series; a consistently entertaining group of recurring characters AND, consistently entertaining and twisting plot lines. Oh, maybe there are a few too many serial killers and a rather large number of conspiracies but, hey! Let's see you come up with 20 or 30 ways to (almost) get away with murder.

Lt. Eve Dallas is a homicide cop in 2058. She comes from dirt poor but marries super rich. Between her and her more-than-slightly dangerous hubby, Roarke, she takes on the top murders in a slightly futuristic NYC. Starting with "Origins in Death" and continuing through her latest effort, "Born in Death", Dallas tries to juggle blood stains and cocktail parties, all while training the erstwhile Peabody and staying one step ahead various killers.

Some of the plot lines are strained, but not to the breaking point. Dallas is constantly trying to come to grips with her sudden wealth and the fact that much of it was accumulated illegally. Her husband, now a legitimate businessman, conveniently handles all the hi-tech stuff Dallas abhors but they still make a believable and likable pair. Each story seems to add a new character or two but the cast doesn't seem crowded, even after 20 some-odd episodes.

The violence is graphic; the sex, though hot and heavy, is muted. The dialogue is crisp and rings true. J.D. Robb writes male dialogue better than any other female writer today.

I recommend this series to anyone who likes a good yarn, fast paced action, and colorful characters with more than just a bit of spice thrown in. Get the whole series. Start with book one and just enjoy the ride.

A Copycat Killer Terrorizes New York in Imitation in Death by J.D. Robb

Pros:
New book in a series. Wonderful characters.

Cons:
Not enough information about a few things

A few years ago I discovered a futuristic suspense series by J.D. Robb. I had heard that the books were good, so I decided to try them. I read the first book, Naked in Death, and was hooked. I got the rest of the books in the series as fast I could and have been reading the series ever since. I just finished reading Imitation in Death. The In Death series is set in New York in the future. The first book took place in 2058. Imitation in Death took place in the summer of 2059. It is the seventeenth book in the series. There have also been two short stories in the series. In each book, Eve...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery
Review created: 03/04/07

Pros:
characters are evolving at an even pace

Cons:
no cons with the book

The adage is Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But, if those being imitated are no longer alive, who is receiving the flattery? The deceased? Or the imitators? If imitator does a great thing, I would imagine the compliment would go to both. However, if the imitator does something horrible, there are no compliments, no honors bestowed, no glory except in his own mind. Now, imagine you re a cop and you catch a case that reminds you of something that happened more than a hundred years ago. There is no compliment, no honor and glory on the copycat or originator of the crime. Just a...

A Spectacular Installment in a Wonderful Series
Review created: 08/29/03

Pros:
Riveting mystery, character development and interaction

Cons:
None

I was thrilled with this book. The two aspects of the "In Death" series that keep readers coming back to it are the mysteries and the development of the characters. In Imitation in Death, the mystery was top notch, and the character development was wonderful. Eve displayed more softness in dealing with her personal connections while still being the tough cop on duty, the mystery kept me guessing up until the culprit was revealed [and I was wrong :)], Roarke displayed an amusing imperfection in character (which I think he needs, one of his flaws in most of the earlier books is that he is too...

Excellent Mystery, Great Evolving Characters makes this book a hit

Pros:
fast paced, cleverly written, and always a surprise ending.

Cons:
reintroduction of characters from previous books can be tedious

I love Nora Roberts, and I was introduced to J. D. Robb, her alternate pen name, by a friend. As soon as I read the first book in the "In Death" series, I was hooked. All of the "In Death" books are wonderful, and you can read them alone or out of order, but they flow wonderfully when read in order and keep up the fun subplots graciously. The only con I can see to these is that sometimes it gets a bit repetitive description wise, but that is a necessary evil for those who haven't read all in the series. I can easily skim through the reintroductions of characters if I need to, but I do find...

  Imitation in Death Review

Pros:
A complete book and a good read from beginning to end.

Cons:
I can not find a negative to report.

As usual J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) has written another compelling thriller with Eve Dallas continuing in her roll of crime fighter with Rork at her side. I am amazed at the depth of character that she continues to develop not only with Eve but each of the sub-characters - Peabody, even the cat! You know when you pick up the book that you will be completely enthralled from page one to the end of the book.
