We know Nora from movies like Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. I had never read her screenplays or earlier books, but I enjoyed this Neck book.
Her sensahuma is charming and definately aligns with my age group...pushing 60. She fills the book with wonderful stories about her time with the Kennedy administration, protesting and marching in the 60's, women's lib in the 70's, and nothing is overdone or boringly detailed.
It's a very fast and quick read. Light. Funny. Charming.
I enjoyed this book and could easily relate to Nora's adventures.
I immensely enjoyed this very quick read. It went too fast and was sorry it ended. If you enjoy Nora Ephron's work, you will love this upbeat, realistic look at life through the decades of being a career minded household chief cook and bottle washer, daughter, wife, mother, friend and overall citizen of the world. I heard about the book from seeing Nora Ephron on Oprah (whom I seldom watch). Ms. Ephron is witty, direct and her approach to life, truthfully refreshing. Will buy more copies to give away as gifts. A must read for everywoman who is just trying to matter.
This was an easy read. Great vacation book. ( Think sitting on the beach!) I bought it after glancing through it at the local bookstore. It looked funny and was! I could totally relate to the aging process Nora was talking about. I guess it is easier to laugh with others when you can relate. I recommend this book to any woman going through mid-life issues. The forties slip up on you and before you know it, a nip here and a tuck there is NOT out of the question! If you like to laugh out loud when you read, this is the book for you. And if aging gracefully is not in your vocabulary, then this is definitely the book to read. Happy reading!
I really enjoyed Nora Ephron's book. She is so witty and real about everything. She brings such humor to the trials of everyday life. This was a fun, light read.
A quirky essay written by a typical neurotic post-menopausal, single New Yorker...and I say that affectionately...a great book to read on vacation, during your "blue" days...will make you laugh because every woman can see bits of herself in it.
My husband and I, both aged around sixty, chuckled frequently throughout the reading of this humorous account of aging, albeit among the affluent. It spurred us to get one of Ephron's novels, "Heartburn", a fictionalized account of the travails of a young single mother, apparently based loosely on the fact that Ephron was at one time married to Carl Bernstein, who fell in love with another woman. These two works are a couple of decades apart, and inbetween, Ephron wrote the screenplay for Harry met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. Her comic viewpoint and her abibility to put that into writing does not need my endorsement. The number of weeks this book was on the New York Times Best Seller list speaks for itself.
This was the most entertaining book I have ever read. I truly enjoyed Nora Ephron's laugh at women's aging. I heartily recommend it for any woman over 40 to read. It was fast reading and I could associate with many of her stories, that only a woman would find funny.
This book was a gift to friend who saw the author interviewed and thought she'd like to read it. I bought it for her birthday. She said it was very good.
Very funny and insightful reading....until the end. The book grabs your attention immediately and you feel as if the writer has been listening and watching your life! But, the end of the book took a downturn which was unexpected. Very disappointed in the end of the book.
As a woman I must say that this book was not worth what I paid for it. Author laughed all the way to the bank, but book is nothing but fluff. Save your money and buy something worthwhile that doesn't poke fun at females.
I enjoyed the book, and had a few laugh out loud moments. Not every topic works, but generally it's a worthwhile and quick read. And buying it on ebay is the way to go.
I bought this book because it was required reading for my book club. I found it enjoyable and easy to relate to. Nora Ephron has a gift for expressing herself in an easy to read way that makes for a "quick read."
I can relate to Nora and her thoughts, we are about the same age and it's so true some of the things she says. all baby bombers should read it! and young ladies could learn some things from the book, fun reading.
I got a lot of chuckles when I read this book, but most of the laughs would only be understood by a woman over 40. The first half was funnier. I thought the author sort of ran out of ideas near the end. Still a pleasant escapist read for an evening.
I love this book. It is a witty and quick read for times when you don't want to have to concentrate on a more serious subject. I checked the price at the bookstores and received a substantial savings by purchasing on ebay (as always).
Nora Ephron's book about aging, and fighting the effects, will resonate with any woman over 50, who has ever contemplated Botox, Plastic Surgery, or wondered who the wrinkly person was looking back at them from the bathroom mirror. Her wry self-deprecating humor hasn't changed over the years!
I love books that focus, in a humorous way, on the problems that all of us must face when getting older. I especially liked Nora Ephron's style of writing about these life progression trials. I laughed many times as I could relate them to myself or someone I love. I am telling alll my friends how wonderful this novel is and is definitely a GOOD read.
I read this book in about an hour, and there were parts I just laughed out loud until I cried. I certainly could relate so much! If you have never lived in New York, the parts about the rent control were kind of boring, but as a whole, I enjoyed the book!
An absolute necessary read for every woman over 50. She has a good grasp on all those subjects that we were never warned about as young woman(or we nevervpaid attention to because we could not even imagine being 50!!)...one day you turn 50 and all the rules change, whether we like to admit or not....i bought it, read it and passed it on to another "aging" friend ...e-bay has made it very easy to shop right from the comfort of home and have purchases delivered right to my door. how great is that!!!...i love it!!!
What I love about E-Bay is it is fast, honest, secure, and saves me a 120-mile round trip to town to hunt for something I need. I live out in the sticks in the Colorado mountains. Thank you for making life easier!
this book was selected for our bookclub read of the month. I was a little funny but not terrically so. there are some points of interest such as an insiders look into living in Manhattan, as if most of us really care. Cute, a bit witty, not enoujgh substance for a good read, might fare better a a movie.
BTW, I did make the cabbage streudel and is was very good!
