Though I read recent reviews that Hurricane reflects Benet's marriage dissolution with Halle Berry, I purchased it for the songs on Hurricane that were presently appropriate for the experiences in my life. It was recommended by my friend who was going through the same experiences. It was recommended to her from another... Heretofore, I was not an Eric Benet followerer; thus, I was not disappointed because it did not typify the genre he is known. it hit me where I lived. Thanks, Eric.
I love "love songs" and he sings them better than most. I enjoyed this CD because it shows a different side of Eric as he experiments with different sounds.
Now, we all know what people say: when a singer is having a sad/stressful/or unfulfilling life, it is projected in the music. Like Mary J.'s older music...it makes you think and you can identify with her and what she's going through. Well, that's not the case with this NEW Eric Bene't! I do NOT like it. I'm a musician and I listened to it for about 2 hours listening to the music shuffled, and only 2 songs caught my attention. (I have to add them later because I can't think of them now)
His last album, was a 5 and I would give the FIRST one a 5. This album reflects what troubles he dealt with while married to Halle Berry. But the music isn't as well, although he has some wonderful people contributing on his album.
This album just DOES NOT show his SINGING talent, nor does it show his MUSICAL talent; all it shows is his struggle with his feelings and his life.
It's O.K. to write and sing about your life, but when you do-make sure that the music is worth LISTENING to.
This album is the worst album that he has. If I could've listened to it before I purchased it, I would HAVE. Instead because I LOVE Eric Bene't so MUCH-I assumed this album would be the best of FOUR (including the 1st with his sister in their group Bene't)

Pros: The dude can sing-several excellent ballads here.
Cons: Several sappy ballads and ill-advised stabs at a bluesy sound.
Once upon a time, Eric Benet was the future of "neo-soul" music. His debut, "True To Myself" got a lot of critical love (even if no one bought it and I didn't particularly like it myself). The follow-up, 1999's "A Day In The Life", was a much more realized album that won him platinum sales and a couple of Grammy nominations. Eric's star SHOULD have been on the rise. Then Hurricane Halle hit. The marriage of the up-and-comer with the film queen was the stuff of tabloid legend. Particularly after Eric got caught stepping out on Ms. Berry (ARE YOU STUPID????), and subsequently sought treatment...
