I love this novel. I was actually turned on to it after seeing the Movie on DVD. There is by far more imagery in the novel that allows your mind to run free. You can almost sense the smells and the feelings that are being portrayed. Its a great read for any age.
I first watched Hayao Miyasaki's film by the same title last summer and I was intrigued by the plot depth. I could tell that he had taken the idea from a book. I had loved the wistful charming quality of the movie and thought the book would have to have the same kind of aura. So I set out on google to find it, having never heard of Diana Wynne Jones or any of her work. I have to say that the book did not disapoint. It had me laughing out loud at times and Jones wry take on fairy tale cliches is adorable. It has a similar atmosphere and turn of phrase to Barry's Peter Pan. I loved it to bits and plan on making it a valued member of my bookshelf.
I liked it. I watched the movie first and then bought a book. Two different things. Book is not as romantic as a movie (only few last pages are) but I liked it anyways. Many characters and intriguing plot.
When I hear Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle was coming to America I was very excited and went to look online for more info and found out it was based on a book. I went to buy the book to get an idea on the movie. I later found out it was quite different from the movie (as most books to movies are). The book is in the point of view of a very apathetic girl who just seems to have given up or not care about a thing. It has a somewhat strange feel to be reading a book from the perspective of someone like that. As the book progresses though you can sense her views of the world changing just by the writing. It is written VERY well and is an excellent and enchanting story. If you've seen the movie already, just be prepared for the apathetic feel of the begining.
This is a wonderful book!!! It it beautifully written and very entertaining!!! I bought it because I've seen the animated movie with the same name which is based on this book. I recomment both the book and the movie, they make a great set!!
After I Netflixed the movie, I came to buy my own copy from half.com. I was estatic when I saw the book, and bought it right away. I couldn't put it down without finishing it, and neither could my boyfriend or roomate.. and we're all 21 years old. The only big opinion we had was that the story moved along fine, then suddenly rushed to a finish.
I really like the book. There were a lot of differences from the Miyazaki film that is was adapted from but it still is a really good book to read. Highly recommended
