Honky Chateau [Remaster] - John, Elton (CD 1996)

Turn Around and Say Good Morning to the Night

Pros:
Contains some absolutely brilliant songs, particularly "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters"

Cons:
There are only ten tracks on the album - I wish it would go on

Sic Transit Gloria - Glory fades... It's sad to watch a once great musician fade into an adult-contemporary, easy-listening malaise. On some level it's like watching a loved one wasting away. Fortunately, in a situation like that, we can always fall back on stories of the old days, complete with pictures and treasured souvenirs. Likewise, as our once-cherished musicians fumble towards mediocrity, we have their old albums to fall back on and to comfort us. For me, Elton John is one of these musicians. Sure, he's been a powerful force in the music industry for more than thirty years. He rightly.

Elton John - Honky Chateau SACD Hybrid

Pros:
Rocket Man, Mona Lisas..., Honky Cat, Susie, the SACD mix

Cons:
Slave, Amy, Hercules. The original production sounds very limited here.

First A Side Note I was rooting for the DVD-Audio format, and I guess I still am, but the titles are not as forthcoming as they are in the SACD format. Having said that, I must add that the SACD titles are being released a lot more scarcely. It seems that the record labels are opting more in favor of the Enhanced or DualDisc formats these days. From their point of view I suppose it makes sense, the DualDisc is more accessible to a bigger audience. Almost everybody has a DVD player these days, and that's pretty much all you need to play the DualDiscs. The DVD-Audio/SACDs also must be played in.

Say Good Morning To The Night...

Pros:
Fantastic early Elton

Cons:
Hercules is a lousy song, and my standard 'ten songs isn't enough' gripe.

In the last 31 years, Elton John has released 38 albums, at a rate of at least one per year (often two or three), missing only four years in which he didn't record an album. Pretty prolific guy, pretty brilliant musician. Honky Chateau was his seventh release, and his second really big one (following Madman Across The Water). It is also one of my favorites of all of his albums. Recorded in his early years, this is Elton without the glitter and the glamour, just good solid rock and roll with no hype. Honky Cat - Honky tonk rock and roll at its finest, a song about a young man heading for life..
