  Rush is on Autopilot

Pros:
Nothing is a total bomb. This is very consistently mediocre.

Cons:
Nothing really worth remembering here.

(Disclaimer: Those looking for a brief description of the album will find what their looking for in the "Review Body" section. The section titled "Track Reviews" is meant only for those who want to read detailed descriptions of the songs, and they do not constitute the essence of this review.   Rush fires out another great album...

Pros:
More thought provoking lyrics behind increasing musical talent.

Cons:
Slower than other Rush albums, but that's not really a con.

Note: This review is part of a re-writing process I'm going through on my earlier Rush entries. Some of them clearly needed a little more polish so I felt obligated to do so. Rather than delete the original and re-submit a new review, I felt it best to simply modify the original and add a notification of the updated review in PTiemann's Notification System. Thanks for reading... ... A new sound. Their sound. That's how Rush was describing Hold Your Fire when it was released back in 1987. For the past 15 years since Rush, the Canadian Power Trio began releasing studio albums, they had allowed..

  Rush perfects pop

Pros:
Excellently balanced sound. Political and personal themes.

Cons:
None.

Hold Your Fire is at the far end of the musical spectrum from 2112. The instruments are all balanced; the layering is thick and rich and the mood of the album is mellow, almost at peace with itself. But the messages are raging in their intensity. There s not a single weak song and all have a unique personality. This is also the only Rush album featuring an outside vocalist that I m aware of, and it is a testament to their confidence as musicians that Rush was willing to invite an outsider into their fold. I ve heard many a mean critique of this album, but none, in my mind, are accurate. Most..

  Rush Turns Another Page
Review created: 04/10/02

Pros:
spiritual, thought-provoking lyrics; a nice variety of mid-tempo rockers and slower, melodic compositions

Cons:
a little too mellow at times

It's hard to believe that a band like Rush could release an album more experimental and more controversial than any of their previous records. However, any respectable Rush fan knows that the band likes to push the envelope and 1987's "Hold Your Fire" is a clear example of how far they are willing to push it. Interestingly enough, way back in '87, this Canadien power trio referred to the music on this album as being "their sound." And while it was a new and fresh sound for the band, a lot of longtime fans didn't buy into it at the time. Nevertheless, it was pretty evident that the band really.

  A spiritual lift
Review created: 04/03/00
by: Taishan -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Spiritually enlightening lyrics, outstanding musical talent

Cons:
I need a few years to think of some ;)

Spiritually enlightening, would perhaps be the best choice of words to describe this album. Most of the time Rush seems to follow a theme through their albums, take some of the others for example, Grace Under Pressure where the theme is human survival (in basic terms), or Counterparts which deals with sexuality. In Hold Your Fire, the theme could be translated as spirituality. Every song on the album deals, in one way or another, with the human spirit. Songs like Force ten with lyrics like, "tough times demand tough hearts, demand tough talk, demand tough songs." (not sure if I got the exact..
