I love this movie because it was made during an era when Hollywood cared about quality and not shock factor. It is well acted and the script is funny. It goes kindof fast at times, so you have to keep up with the plot, but it is a wonderful movie. The was another version made in the 1980's with Kathleen Turner and Burt Reynolds, but it wasn't as good of a movie. They changed the storyline enough to take away alot of the quality of the the theme of the movie. If you like quality black and white movies, then you will love this movie.

His Girl Friday is His X-Wife
Review created: 10/21/07

Cary Grant plays Walter Burns, the editor of a major newspaper in this 1940 movie. When the movie opens, his x-wife and best reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) arrives to tell Walter of her impending marriage to Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy). Walter is not happy about losing his best reporter and wife one bit and pulls a rabbit out of a hat to keep her from going.

The rabbit is a big story that is about to break about Earl Williams (John Qualen), a convicted murderer who is about to be executed. Walter talks Hildy into going for the last interview of Williams at the prison and sabotages Baldwin with various tricks that land him in jail 3 times. Hildy does interview Williams, and then he later escapes and ends up in the reporters' room of the prison where Hildy is waiting for her beau. Then, Hildy hides him in a roll-top desk in hope of having another big story. In other words, she still has the passion to be a reporter.

This movie moves entirely too fast, and the dialog is so fast that it is impossible to keep up with. You would have to be a manic personality to enjoy it. In addition, the quality of the playing of this DVD is not real good in spite of the fact that I bought it sealed and brand new. There are no subtitles and no special features.

The movie is based on a famous play by Charles MacArthur called "The Front Page" and has been remade into movies over and over again. This version is not the best in spite of the critics' opinions in the movie books that I have.

The Newspaper Bidness: His Girl Friday
Review created: 07/07/07
by: George_Chabot-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Story, Supporting Cast

Cons:
Some tragic issues are dealt with rather lightly

His Girl Friday (1940) He's not so bad; he's got a lot of charm. Bruce He comes by it naturally; his grandfather was a snake. Hildy A remake of The Front Page - this version takes the ace reporter, Hildy, played by Pat O'Brien and changes it to a woman reporter played by the beautiful and funny Rosalind Russell. Howard Hawks His Girl Friday gives fast paced action with rapid-fire repartee between ace reporter Hildy (Rosalind Russell) - who wants to leave the paper and get married - and Walter Burns (Cary Grant), the tough NYC editor who is also her ex-husband. Burns will try anything he can...

  His Girl Anyday.

Pros:
Grant, Russell, supporting cast, direction, screenplay.

Cons:
Plot is as twisting and rapid as river rapids.

Based upon the Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur play The Front Page , His Girl Friday is one of the most terrific and enjoyable of screwball comedies, as well as a satire of the newspaper business (Which explains it lack of Oscars). Cary Grant is Walter Burns, the chief editor of the Morning Daily newspaper. He runs into trouble with his ex-wife Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell), who is also the best writer at the paper. Hildy tells Walter that she is moving to Albany and is getting married to an insurance man, Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy). Thus, she's quitting her job. This comes at a bad...

  Crazy 1940 low-budget comedy
Review created: 12/01/01
by: Pisces -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Dynamic and charming Rosalind Russell, always dashing Cary Grant

Cons:
No music-orchestrals, no costume changes, too much fast talking and running around

Granted, Columbia was not the powerhouse that MGM was in the 30's and 40's, but this film has absolutely no production values. As opposed to the glossy way MGM's films of the day were shot, Columbia's 1940 "His Girl Friday" doesn't have a single location shot, practically no costume changes; and, I guess they must have spent all their money on the Principals, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, because there's no apparent musical score. And, there's no all-out romantic scenes between Grant and Russell who are playing two ex-spouses who are divorced but still have a thing for each other. Rosalind.

I'd Be Grant's Girl Any Day

Pros:
Clever, witty, funny dialogue.

Cons:
Gets a little slow towards the end.

Being a big fan of Cary Grant, I've seen many of his films, but HIS GIRL FRIDAY is definitely one of my favorites. Grant, who never won much recognition in the way of awards, is an amazing comic actor and physical comedian while still being extremely sexy. HIS GIRL FRIDAY is one of his better roles, pitting him against Rosalind Russell in the screwball comedy to end all screwball comedies. The dialogue is not only witty, intelligent and sarcastic it fairly crackles off the screen. The banter between Grant and Russell also manages to be intimate and sweet even when they're putting each other...

  Grant at His Comedic Best
Review created: 01/09/00
by: Der_Kaiser -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Casting, Plot, Whit, Humor, Direction

Cons:
NONE

It is extremely difficult to determine what Grant comedy is the best. In fact, I say that it is imposible to do so. Therefore, why try. Each Grant comedy has its own flair and stamp on the genre. "His Girl Friday" is one of those gems, which perhaps shines a little bit more than most. I have viewed this movie at least 30 times in my life, and never once did it seem old or stale. There were earlier attempts and remakes, but NOTHING is like the Hawks version. The entire cast is like a treasure chest of movie greats from leading stars to the supporting actors. Cary Grant...Rosalind Rssell.....
