High Spirits (2002, DVD)

I remember seeing this movie many years ago, and enjoyed it. Hence, decided to buy it on DVD. The movie is like I remembered, but there are some problems with it. The story line of the movie deals with a castle, being reposed and moved to California. The current owner (O'Toole) decides to draw attention to the castle, as it is an inn, decides to create spooks and ghosts. This he does, not too successfully, but in so doing, the real spooks and ghosts disapprove and decide to take matters in their own hands. The rest of the movie deals with the interaction between these real ghosts and the humans within the castle.

The plot is bumpy, with not consistent acting across the board. Peter O'Toole is great as the owner/descendant of the castle, and provides probably the best acting of the movie. The other characters are a not as well developed, and do not provide as good of acting as O'Toole. The only other actor that comes close is Liam Neeson as Martin Brogan, one of the spirits.

Over all though a fairly enjoyable movie, though having some sexual connotations and a simulated sex scene (both of which could have been left out as they added nothing to the movie). There are some good scenes in it, and Peter O'Toole probably is the one who keeps the entire thing going.

Oh man its 1 of the greatest and funniest movies ever. I love it it mixes fear and comedy just perfect just when u think something is going to go bad it goes totally funny and crazy. Then in the end everybody gets what he or she wants. its an older movie but the laughs just don't seem to grow old. I love how old Peter O' toole just seems to hold it all to gather when things are coming apart then he even loses it and acts like he's really lost it i am telling you if you don't see this movie your missing something that totally cool. I bought the movie because the first time i saw it i loved it.

Peter O'Toole is Peter Plunkett, the owner of a dilapidated Irish castle which acts as a bed and breakfast supplying the only employment for the local villagers. Owing money to an American businessman, Plunkett has the idea to turn the castle into "The most haunted castle in Europe" for the tourist trade. He and his wacky staff of Irish characters set about creating ghost costumes and effects for their first group of American lodgers.

At first annoyed by the inept hauntings, the American guests (including Steve Guttenberg, Beverly D'Angelo, Connie Booth and Jennifer Tilly) soon get what they paid for as the genuine ghosts of Castle Plunkett take umbrage with being cheaply exploited and stage a full scale paranormal event.

Two of the castle's ghosts, Mary Plunkett and Martin Brogan (played by Daryl Hannah and Liam Neeson) become romantically entangled with Guttenberg and D'Angelo's characters. This romantic twist is the focus of most of the plot.

I believe this to be the most entertaining movie for the entire family I have seen in a long long time.

Movie came out in 1988, not 2002 as listed by ebay.

It is a great movie and a good buy. This movie is funny and will keep you laughting the whole time. It is an older film but one that every person should see. If you get a chance you should rent or buy this item.

I love this movie! I enjoyed it the first time I saw it when it was first released. It has fun laughs and is what I like to call a great mindless movie...good to just lay back and enjoy. The cast is great! I wanted to have this movie for my DVD collection! It also makes a great halloween movie for those who like ghost but do not want the classic scary you to death movie! I think you will love it too!

High Spirits is a movie I recall watching and adoring as a kid. It's full of good humor, a great cast and is just a well-rounded movie. It's not full of all the CGI stuff of todays' films, but that's what makes it classic. It may not be the BEST movie of all time, but it'll always be one that makes me smile. :)
