If you love suspense, you'll love this!!!

Dakota Fanning is incredible as usual and Robert De Niro is awesome as her mourning father.

Mini Plot Summary:
Fanning and De Niro move to the country after the death of De Niros wife. Although a slow starter, once Fanning meets Charlie (her imaginary friend) the action really picks up.

Final Verdict:

3/5

Rent or Buy?: I've seen this movie twice and enjoyed it both times. That being said I don't feel the urge to watch this movie over and over again. Rent it once or twice, but buying it isn't necessary.

  Suspense-Packed Thriller Lives Up !!!!

Honestly, do any of us think that anything with Robert DeNiro will not be, at least, good?? Well, once again he doesn't disappoint. -- In an effort to rescue his daughter from what is seeming to be an exceptionally painful trauma of her mother's suicide, DeNiro (the father) takes his daughter (Dakota Fanning) to live far away in a rural woods suburb. Heavily isolated and peaceful. Expecting the move may begin to help her move past the trauma and begin to lay the foundations of her new life. As a psychologist himself, DeNiro's character feels he is absolutely certain as to the positive outcomes. -- BUT?? Once moved in, it's everything but helpful as his daughter begins a daily ritual of "Hide-and-Seek" games with an imaginary friend named "Charlie" that only she can see. Odd characters begin to reveal themselves and play into DeNiro's life. Desperate to help his daughter, DeNiro plunges deep into the abyss of what he believes is his daughter's mental disintegration. But is she? Or does she know more than he does? -- The cat-and-mouse game is played to a horrifying confrontation, as the mystery deepens, "Charlie" refuses to go away....and even the mother's suicide comes into question. -- A HUGE plot twist is revealed and it all comes horrifyingly full circle. Is anyone really being saved? Or is this all a descendiary fall into madness? Everything is game in this suspense-taut thrill-ride. Dakota Fanning really sells this movie so hard that she nearly steals the tension right from under DeNiro....which is saying something. Honestly, the plot is extremely believable and realistic. It could be easy to see how a trauma could have led to this and that is what it hits home here. This could happen....to you !!!! SEE THIS !!!! You won't be disappointed. I assure you !!!!

PLEASE SEE MY OTHER REVIEWS FOR GREAT FILMS !!!!

Interesting movie...You think it's innocent at first, then it turns. It continues to change over and over. You think the things that are happening are being done by a "ghost" or someone that no one can think of or find. A great movie...I can't give it away, but this one is a keeper for sure! I watched it on TV and missed a few moments. I was so interested that I immediately got online and bought it so I could see anything I may have missed. The ending is a real surprise! 4 stars from me!

Come out come out wherever you are...
Review created: 02/16/08

It's easy to disguise eleven year-old Dakota Fanning's silky strawberry tresses under a goth-black wig. But one might think that hiding her remarkable acting talents would be a bit more difficult. That's exactly what has happened with Hide and Seek. Fannning plays a character named Emily who finds her world shattered after the suicide of her mother (Amy Irving). Understandably, Emily withdraws into an emotional shell and never utters much more than a few sentences for the remainder of the film. What isn't understandable however is the choice to waste the talents of one of Hollywood's hottest and most accomplished child actors in a role that calls for her character to walk around in a wide-eyed trance-like state. It might have made more sense to enlist the services of an up-and-comer with a less known reputation for charming the pants off anyone who watches her perform.

Borrowing a similar set-up to many earlier horror plots, Emily's father, David (Robert DeNiro) moves her to a new home in a rather isolated community in hopes of avoiding any reminders of their traumatic event. But shortly after moving into their new house, Emily develops an imaginary friend named Charlie. She blames a recent spate of horrific and deadly events on Charlie, but despite Emily's insistence, her father isn't quite ready to believe that Charlie is a real person as she adamantly insists.

As events play out, it becomes evident that the entire story is evolving for the sole purpose of delivering the big unexpected twist. But by the time the deception finally arrives, not only have we already figured it out, but also the film has worn out its welcome with an endless tirade of loud noises, rapid jump cuts, shattering glass, and –I'm not kidding here - the obligatory cat that leaps from behind a closed door. Director John Polson and screenwriter Ari Schlossberg should know from the films they've emulated, that true psychological horror comes from what we feel rather than from what we see or
hear.

Good movie/Suspenseful. Great acting. A thriller to the end. Keeps one at the end of their seat throughout the entire movie. Robert Di Nero is one of the greatest actors of our time. I doubt if we'll ever see the likes of his kind again.

This is one of the best suspense movies I have seen. Has a plot that you will not expect. Heads you in one direction & turns you around! Can't say much more, I would not want to ruin anything for that person that has not seen it. This is definately a movie worth watching if you like the suspense!

Being a fan of Mr. DeNero, I bought this. I hadn't seen it.
I watched it and it was a slow starter but was kind of choppy and had a lot of things going on. It was like a good idea that had a few igredients left out, causing it not to be as good as it could of been.

As has been said before, the movie really does drag on for a while without much action, which is quite disappointing. Considering how much talent both De Niro and Fanning have, you want to actually see them doing something.

Sure, you have good ol' Robert talking to his daugter a lot, and that's all effortish of him. That's just not something I want to mainly see for a big duration of the movie. *sigh*

Surprisingly, I didn't predict the outcome, which indeed was predictable. I guess I was sleepy or something. Heh. Was there something to learn from this movie? Sure. I learned two things:

1: De Niro and Fanning are good actors, even in movies that are not so hot.
2: Never ever go in the basement at night when people have died in your house.

Bottom line: Somewhat entertaining, but don't own it. Just rent it once if you're bored.

this movie is another twister i would relate to the 6th sense (except not a ghost movie) if you only wanted to watch 6th sense once then just rent hide and seek, if you like re watching it then buy hide and seek .....
its a good movie about a phyciatrist trying to cope with his wifes "suicide" by moving and taking his younger daughter to a new atmosphere but now he has to deal with the crap going on at home since the death ....
i recommend also watching the alternative endings, the ending they choose was good but i liked the alternatives a lot ....
watch the movie, and watch it carefully, i had watched it with a few friends and they didnt really understand it in the end (they got the principal but then didnt understand how it related to the issues) i got it, and my smarty pants BF figured it out before it ended, no fun so dont watch it with people who talk to much during movies.

The suspense is getting to the suspense
Review created: 01/21/06(updated 01/24/06)

This movie drags for a long time (like 50 minutes) before finally getting to the suspense. The build up is flat and boring, but the twist in the movie is very good. I was disappointed in how it ended, because to give it the appropriate Hollywood ending a character barely involved had to be brought in and it really work. Then the ending opportunity that seems like it is happening doesn't and you are forced into an ending that makes very little sense and is anti-climatic because you are just waiting for the movie to be over.

After watching it, the story was a good idea, just poorly done. Too bad, it had good potential in retrospect.

Since this movie isn't very good, the availability of the alternate endings in the DVD aren't enough to save it. The bonus features would have been good if the movie was worth purchasing.

Don't buy it, don't rent it.

A long beautiful yet deadly game of hide and seek.

Pros:
Wonderful surprise ending.

Cons:
Takes way to long to get to the ending.

I recently purchased Hide and Seek (2005) at my local video store for pennies on the dollar. The film starts off with the following words, "First day of the New Year", "New York City", in white set in a black background. The movie finally begins with a tranquil and happy setting immediately introducing the viewer to the main characters. Emily Callaway (Dakota Fanning) is being spun around in circles on a carousel by her mother Alison Callaway (Amy Irving) who is eventually joined by her husband Dr. David Callaway (Robert De Niro). Jumping right into the movies plot Emily s mother engages in a.

Pros:
Dakota Fanning has some intimidating facial expressions, nice parts that will make you jump

Cons:
not scary enough, not one of Deniro's best

Fifteen minutes into Hide and Seek, maybe even twenty, I loudly expressed my opinion to my girlfriend sitting next to me how the movie was going to end. I made the same assumption in White Noise, though I was only half right with it during that movie. With Hide and Seek though, I nailed it on the head. Scary movies are starting to trickle into theaters now, and while I can t comment on Boogeyman, Hide and Seek did exactly what it s intentions are - it made me jump. Boy did it make me jump good. Jumpiness aside, Hide and Seek didn t exactly stack up to what I thought it would be, and I was...

by: flamepillar -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A little suspenseful in spots

Cons:
Slow-moving, not terribly engaging

Watch out, Dakota Fanning is a force to be reckoned with. At the tender age of 10, she has already made her face known via a series of successful films including I Am Sam, Man On Fire, The Cat In The Hat and now this one, Hide And Seek. Aside from playing a startling variety of roles, Dakota is now (gasp!) dying her hair too. (And is it just me or are those teeth an awful lot bigger than just a year ago?) At this rate, she'll be married in another 3 years and go on to become the first female president of the United States. Stranger things have happened. In H

Pros:
Dakota Fanning

Cons:
Script and weak ending

When I saw the previews for this movie, it looked like a sure winner. Looks can be deceiving. Not even the incredible acting talents of Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning could save this film. Why did I not like the movie? Here's a few reasons: 1. There are huge inconsistencies in the plot. Without giving away the "surprise" ending, one of the main characters apparently has mastered the ability to be in two places at the same time. At least that is what director John Polson leads us to believe. 2. I found the script to be incredibly weak for a film starring first rate actors. De Nero,...

You go seek another movie and hide from this one!
Review created: 07/08/05
by: jbrd -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Powerful cast, few really good scares and some of the sound effects.

Cons:
Concept, really slow moving, everything seems forced and the R rating is silly.

At their new home in upstate New York, newly widowed psychologist David Callaway tries desperately to help his traumatized daughter Emily deal with her mother's death but before long, both David and Emily are being terrorized by someone or something named Charlie: a "friend" who may or may not be imaginary but is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of! Spoilers are in this review. Cast/Acting: Powerful cast is in Hide And Seek. Staring Robert De Niro, Dakota Fanning, Elizabeth Shue and Famke Janssen. Robert De Niro is THE type of guy that would be found in mobster movies...not in a scary.
