So let's be honest - how much do you really expect from a printer that retails for about $40? We can dog this printer all we want, but it is what it is - a very inexpensive inkjet printer for the individual that doesn't do a lot of printing.
That said, I have been really impressed with the 3940. The print speed is antirely adequate, the paper handling is more reliable than it looks, and the printer folds up into a fairly unobtrusive package.
My only criticism is the external power brick; this should be integrated into the printer, with a standard power cable.
That said, I'm going to keep the 3940 on my desk for as long as I have the need to print the occasional document.
This printer (almost identical to the 3930V & D1455 with the exception that it is all white with no gray highlights) is an excellent buy if you just need a no frills color printer. Prints excellently, takes readily available cartridges, and comes with cartridges too.
This printer is relatively fast & certainly compact. It looks attractive on your desk especially with white iMacs or Macbooks, iBooks.
Be careful of buying one on eBay though, these printers are as low as $18.88 at discount retail stores like Big Lots & WalMart.
And don't forget that HP cartridges are recyclable at almost all Office Stores - so it's kinda like you get a $6 rebate once your cartridges are used up.
I was sceptical of purchasing a used printer not knowing the original owner, but I have purchased many items from this seller, and decided to risk the few dollars involved. The printer works splendidly for the general kind of letter and form printing I need, and I am thrilled to once again have my "trash to treasure" instincts validated!
Never get stuck with anything but an HP when you are buying a printer. We happen to own this model among other HP models we also already won, and we have just a couple of comments for what is a nice unit.
First of all I suggest you refill the cartridges for ten bucks rather than replace them for $24 each time. Youll feel better about your prints.
Next, be aware that often the sort of thicker glossy/photo paper you might find in stores offering discounts may not work in this printer as it has a certain sensitivity to paper thickness and simply wont pull through and feed paper which is rated to work in it by certain manufacturers of the paper, but which nevertheless simply dont do so well in this model of printer.
Youd be amazed at how far the ink will take you. You can get a great many letterhead and color photo prints done - more than you might expect certainly, before you have to head off for some expensive colored water in the form of an ink refill for it.
This printer has worked out great. I needed a printer for just small things and it works great. I like that it was a low cost printer and that it is compact.
I like the simpleness about it, the speed and the clearness of the copies. I do not like that it seems to get jammed up, but, it is easy to take care of so that is not really a big problem either. A good buy.
i needed a printer and everyone i talked to at the stores said they haven't come out with the printer for windows vista and this one matched with my computer so i boutht it. I love the printer it works great.
HP is known for its quality but this model is by far the sharpest in its class. Photos come out crisp and clear (if proper used), and the speed is a definite plus!
Highly recommend it! I got it at eBay for $19.99 a month ago. Only regret is the price is even lower now ($12.99!!!).

Pros: Very cheap, print quality is good, cartridges inexpensive, takes up little space.
Cons: Print cartridges low volume, low speed for normal quality printing.
If you're wanting a speedy printer, this may not be what you're looking for. Top speed is 16ppm black and 12ppm color, in draft mode. I do most of my printing in fast draft since the documents are unimportant. The quality in normal mode is acceptable for school assignments or maybe even for work documents as the text is almost laser quality. The printer comes completely stocked with both a 3-color cartridge and a black cartridge. The cartridges are: Black- 21 5ml (about $16) Color- 22 5ml (about $15) Exterior Design: Dimensions: w/d/h When ready to print: 16.6/13.6/5.6 inches, With media tray.

Pros: Inexpensive, this is the hook.
Cons: Ink way too expensive, jams frequently. Was missing power cord when it arrived new.
I researched this printer and bought it just after it came out. The literature said it was good for low volume printing and the output quality was good. I thought it would be a good, inexpensive choice for my son for printing papers at college. Now that he's used it for a couple months, I can genuinely make this recommendation: Save your money and buy something else! "Low volume" printing is an understatement. Each ink cartridge holds only 5 ml of ink and costs in the neighborhood of $15. (The black cartridges for my older HP 932 printer hold 42 ml each and I pay about $30; the color...
