Help! - Beatles (The) (Cassette 1987)

"And now my life has changed in oh so many ways"

Pros:
Lots of excellent songs

Cons:
The entire CD's less than 35 minutes

Help! is an oft-overlooked Beatles album from 1965. As you can probably tell from its title, this is the soundtrack to the film Help!. Although a lot of people believe the movie is inferior to the Beatles' first effort, A Hard Day's Night, many agree that the soundtrack is superior. Unfortunately, the album is usually overlooked because it's not as "revolutionary" as their next works, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and The Beatles (The White Album). Help! shows the Beatles' maturation as a group. George Harrison was finally seriously attempting songwriting (his..

Pros:
The songs are catchy as heck and starting to get really innovative

Cons:
A few relatively "throwaway" numbers by their standards

(Disclaimer: Those looking for a brief description of the album will find what their looking for in the "Review Body" section. The section titled "Track Reviews" is meant only for those who want to read detailed descriptions of the songs, and they do not constitute the essence of this review. Lastly and most importantly, this review is not necessarily written by the point of view of a Beatles fan.) Overall Score: 5/5 Best song: Help! and Yesterday Worst song: You Like Me Too Much Review Body: Another Beatles album and another masterpiece. This probably isn't as much of a stylistic jump...

  Another step towards Revolver
Review created: 06/14/00

Pros:
It's the Beatles, of course!

Cons:
A few less-than-sterling tracks, but some diamonds also

Help! was released in 1965, and seven of the songs on the album comprised a part of the soundtrack of the movie of the same name. This record is one of the final steps in the maturation of the Beatles and the album hints at the glories of Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and The White Album. This is the last album where the Beatles would cover songs by any of the artists who preceded them. All songs on Help! are composed by Lennon/McCartney or George Harrison, except for two. A list of the songs on the album and my analysis of each follows. 1. Help--This song opens with a...

The Only Thing You've Done Was Yesterday
Review created: 02/22/06
by: scapp70 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
All of Lennon's tracks, I've Just Seen A Face, Yesterday, I Need You

Cons:
Another Girl, The Night Before, You Like Me Too Much

The Beatles had such huge success in 1964. They arrived in America in February 1964, and Beatlemania reached such heights as never seen before. They made a movie, Hard Day's Night which acquired the praise of both fans and critics, the soundtrack just as successful. Now, in 1965 let's see if The Beatles are up to the challenge of duplicating, or continuing their success. They release another movie, Help! and a soundtrack of course to accompany the film of the same name. One road The Beatles had taken, either purposely or accidentally, had reinvented their song writing style and emerged with a.

The transition album of the Beatles
Review created: 04/09/08
by: akasashinai -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
energetic, the put their heart into it, variety

Cons:
some tracks don't stand out as much as others

When I look at the Beatles career, I see two distinct periods. On one side we have their early, simple work. Then, on the other side of things, we have their later, more creative period. Throughout these early albums we can hear Paul and John developing significantly as songwriters, an evolution that would continue more and more throughout the band s career. Help!, in my eyes, stands out as the transitional album in their career; a sort of dividing line, one that doesn t fit into either category. The music is for the most part too simple to fall into their later work, yet the writing is a...
