A Classic Animated Comic Book Flashback for Adults
Review created: 12/17/05

Reviewing a cult classic like Heavy Metal is not easy. If you’re in your 35-50, watching this movie will undoubtedly bring back memories of Midnight Movies and the vexing decision of whether to go to Heavy Metal, Rocky Horror Picture Show or the laser light show at the local planetarium. It is best viewed in the same "altered state" many of us first saw it in.

Compared to current standards, the animation in Heavy Metal is simplistic and "special effects" (SFx) are non-existent. Despite the lack of SFx the talent of the various animators is evident and if your expectations don't exceed a comic book come to life, you won't be disappointed.

All of the animated shorts feature women with exaggerated breasts and artfully trimmed pubic hair, who willingly engage in consensual sex. Obviously this is something designed to appeal to teenage males and those who never quite outgrew that stage in their life. This is definately NOT a movie for families, children under the age of 16 or women with a feminist chip on their shoulders!

Because of its memorable part in my own personal movie-going history, this movie has a permanent place in my library. If you are a comic book or animation collector, you will want to own a copy.

  With Spanish Subtitles (non-removable)
Review created: 07/23/08
by:

I was looking for a copy of this old cult classic and bid before I read the fine print..."Spanish Subtitles". I won, and of course, I paid, then hoped for the best.

I feel that the itself film is a well-made solid bit of late 70's to mid-80's animation that has settled into a certain cult genre...but I could certainly do without the large, rather poorly-added subtitles that have been run across the bottom fourth of the screen. There is no way to watch the film without them, and even if I spoke only Spanish, they would still detract from the film. A DVD at least can have the subtitles dumped, but the VHS doesn't have that happy feature!

It's very difficult to enjoy a film when you can't see the screen and get distracted by the subtitles.

I would definitely buy the movie in the future, but never again without reading the fine print. :)

  Enjoy!

Enjoy this movie, it is trippy as none other. Beware of the sweet bird, he will steal your heart. The weirdness of having a bunch of stories following eachother is rather pleasurable to watch, as it keeps you thoroughly entertained.

This movie is a true classic. One of the best fantasy cartoons every
I don't recomend it to teens or child. It dose have graphic scenes, but

  Pedal To The Metal
Review created: 07/16/01
by: MrsNormanMaine -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Interesting animation. Fun musical selections.

Cons:
Episodic and hokey.

Madame Rose, my publicist, called this morning; she's still trying to finalize the details of my appearance as cohost of the Tip-Top awards at the Apollo Theater later this summer. She's having some difficulty getting the right coverage as the producers insist that I, MNM, am a young man with a blond crew cut and a foul mouth. She needed to inform them repeatedly that I am a perennially youthful, 39 year old living legend, screen icon and tap star. She did admit that my hair is depressingly short these days following the little accident at the Utah concert; I am, however, covering it up...

  Absolutely brilliant (if you're high!)

Pros:
Wholly original concept.

Cons:
Way too bizarre to appreciate sober; poor production values; sexist.

The fantasy genre often deals with mythological themes but it hardly ever presents them in relatable terms. "Heavy Metal" is an anthology somehow connected by a story of "The Ultimate Evil in the Universe," but it's too strange and poorly assembled to appreciate. The evil symbol is a green orb that talks in a menacing voice which speaks in allegories and villainous clich s (oooh scary). The orb is somehow bounced around the universe and through time and the stories are about how it affects the people it interacts with. The first story takes place on Earth in the 21st century. A girl who knows.

The Epitome of Cool: Gerald Potterton's Heavy Metal
Review created: 03/21/08
by: xxxxer -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
"B-17," "Harry Canyon;" soundtrack, really quality animation, it's creative and original

Cons:
"Captain Sternn," content may be too much for some

Based on the fantasy/sci-fi magazine of the same name, 1981's Heavy Metal is perhaps one of the coolest movies I've ever seen. I remember seeing this on cable back in the day (it still astonishes me that this movie could be edited to even be acceptable to run on cable), and being blown away by the nature of the film. In a world where cartoons mainly are aimed at children, here was an animated film geared strictly for older audiences, replete with graphic violence, full nudity and sex; generally containing all the stuff that was off-limits in most cartoons I had previously seen. Heavy Metal...

Heavy Metal - Still Shines After 20 Years
Review created: 03/05/00
by: swoeste -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Very creative and imaginative, excellent sound track with top 1980 groups, humorous, some superb animation, many voices by John Candy.

Cons:
Very violent, sexist, coarse humor, disturbing scenes.

I was frantically cramming for a biochemistry summer school final when I glanced at the newspaper in the campus library, and saw the advertisement for "Heavy Metal". In less than 60 seconds, the biochemistry notes were slapped shut and thrown in the back seat of my car, and I was on my way to the matinee showing. I got to the theater just in time to get in as the house lights went down, and the first episode cranked up. And I do mean CRANKED UP, as a 1960 Corvette Roadster dropped from a space shuttle's cargo bay, entered the atmosphere in flames, parachuted to the ground, and raced to a...

  One Way Ticket...

by: blackelve -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
music, animation, memories

Cons:
none

Heavy Metal is a movie that is a classic that in the pass year they have brought back to the public. For years this movie was extremely hard to locate. I saw Heavy Metal for the first time in a drive in when I was in my teens and the movie and the music had stuck me long into my thirties. (in fact, I have gone through two albums, three tapes and now a CD of the soundtrack) This movie is all based around a green globe of light that for some strange reason brings upon disaster. There is six animation stories that all relate around each other (loosely) with that green globe appearing in the...
