WHY I BOUGHT THE BOOK HAWAII BY JAMES MICHENER
Review created: 07/08/08

I FIRST BOUGHT AND READ THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN YEARS OLD, 45 YEARS AGO. EVEN THOUGH IT IS A NOVEL IT HAS A LOT OF TRUE HISTORY ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND AND THEIR CULTURE. WE WENT TO HAWAII, THE ISLAND OF KONA, THE LARGEST, LAST SEPTEMBER (2007) AND I WISHED THAT I HAD READ THE BOOK MORE RECENTLY. WELL, WE HAVE A TRIP SCHEDULED TO MAUI THIS DECEMBER (2008) AND I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO FIND THIS BOOK ON HALF COM FOR $1.75. I HAD LOOKED IN BORDERS BOOK STORE EARLIER AND THE PAPERBACK EDITION WAS $17.00, SO THOUGHT I'D LOOK ON EBAY BEFORE PURCHASING. THE BOOK I RECEIVED IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND CAN SURELY BE HANDED DOWN TO SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY WHO IS INTERESTED.

I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE AND WILL CONTINUE TO SEARCH HALFCOM FOR BOOKS AND MUSIC, WHICH I HAVE ALSO PURCHASED ON HALFCOM, WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS. HALFCOM IS A GREAT PLACE TO PURCHASE CD'S AND BOOKS WHICH ARE NO LONGER FOR SALE IN THE STORES, AND SOLD A VERY GOOD PRICES.

  Hawaii

I bought this because when I was in Hawaii I went to the palace museum and heard about how the US raped this tiny island and put their Christian Queen in prison just because we wanted Pearl Harbor. This book is hard to read at the beginning because of much speculation as to how and when the islands were formed, but I am wading through it. Also it it too long and I don't know how long it will take me to read, but all of Michener's books are long (over 1,000 pages).

Hawaii, a must read for everyone.

Growing up I was a typical male child of the 50's. I played sports, was into cars and drag racing, and enjoyed rock music. The one thing I didn't do was read. I was dating a girl in the 9th grade who was carrying around this huge book with her everywhwere she went. One day I asked her about the book and she handed it to me. It was Hawaii, by some guy named James Michener, who I had never heard of in my life. I looked the book over and asked her what class it was for. She told me it was just 'fun reading'. I had never heard the expression and thought it an odd pairing of words kind of like army intelligence, government worker, and jumbo shrimp. She told me I was missing an entire world of enjoyment. I told her I see it it came to the movies. When she finished the book she gave it to me and dared me to read the first 100 pages, which I did. I have no idea what happened to the girl, but I know the book made a big, big impression on me. I laughed. I cried. I even enjoyed myself. The worst was the day I read the last page. It had been many years since I'd thought of Hawaii. Years ago, I read all of Michener's books, but Hawaii is still my favorite. I saw it the other day on EBay, so I bid and got it. I am on page 101 and loving it all over again. I plan to give it to my 26 year old daughter when I am finished. Read the first 100 pages, I dare you.

  Michener at his best.

Pros:
vivid, engrossing, informative story of culture clash and evolution.

Cons:
very long; lots of characters can get confusing.

James Michener is not an author for the light reader - most of his works top 1000 pages, and Hawaii is no exception. However, if your reading stamina is up to the task, Michener takes you on a journey across all of time, from the volcanic origins of the islands to the present, weaving a gripping story of the families and cultures that shaped and were shaped by Hawaii. The novel begins by following the geological formation of the islands and the arrival of plant and animal life. This section can be a little boring, but adds much depth to the coming story, so it's worth putting up with until...

History and Fiction - Michener's Formula
Review created: 09/14/00

Pros:
Highly detailed, incredible use of prose

Cons:
Sleep-inducing

When I was younger, my father always tried to get me to read James Michener's works - after all, he (my father) wrote the definitive bibliography of James Michener's work. That bibliography (Hardcover, "James A. Michener: A Bibliography," by David Groseclose, ISBN: 1880510235) is 336 pages of entries. This is almost as long as some of Michener's less-hefty works. "Hawaii" weighs in at 1140 pages in paperback. Don't drop it on your foot. It's also one of only a few of Michener's books that I've managed to get all the way through. James Michener appears to have followed a formula for his works..
