Haunted Honeymoon (2001, DVD)

For fans of "Young Frankenstein" & "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother", the creepy comedy "Haunted Honeymoon" is writer/director/star Gene Wilder's love letter to both the scary radio dramas of his youth like "Inner Sanctum" & "I Love A Mystery" & the old B-movies made from them & to his beloved wife Gilda Radner, an undeniably plain-faced but extremely talented comedienne who earns every one of her loving close-ups.
In this period piece that carefully recreates the look & atmosphere of the terror tales of old, Wilder plays a radio star on the verge of a nervous breakdown who goes with his wisecracking fiancee Radner to a family reunion in the spooky old dark house he grew up in & confronts werewolves & other ghoulish figures, a mysterious murderer & a terrible family secret buried in his past, plus a bevy of weird relatives including a surly psychiatrist, a sinister hypnotist...& Dom DeLuise in drag as his overacting aunt!
The disc is very sparse on the extras with only the original trailer being offered & no commentary track which is a shame because Wilder's work on other discs has always been enjoyably informative.
Still, considering that the flick was such a major disappointment at the box office &, more importantly, that Gilda died not too long after it was released, I guess it's not so surprising that he probably doesn't want to talk about it.
That said, while not to everyone's taste, "Haunted Honeymoon" is bizarre & inventive & funny in that old-fashioned way that doesn't require constantly going for the gross-out.
Oh, & for an extra bit of fun, go check out the Spanish language audio track...seems that creepy "Inner Sanctum"-style narrator has a few more lines there than in the English original, probably because this kind of radio spook show is still popular throughout the Spanish-speaking world to this day.

This is by far my favorite horror spoof of all time. Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner absolutely glow together, and Dom DeLuise in drag is just an added bonus. There is a catchy dance number, a mysterious werewolf, a threatening magician, and a butler named Fister. Who could ask for anything more? Be sure to see the bit where the police catch Gene Wilder standing in the cellar's woodpile. It leaves me weak with laughter every time! If you've never seen it, it's definately worth checking out. I'm certain your entire family will love it!

I had a great deal of fun watching and rewatching this movie. Gilda Radner is wonderful, Mel Brooks is nuts as usual, and Dom Deluise is adorable in drag!

The package and DVD was in new condition and I enjoyed the movie because my favorite movie stars are staring in it. I decided to by the dvd because I am adding it to my collection.

Haunted Honeymoon has everything you could want... a kooky couple, crazy relatives and an unlikely killer. I love classic movies and the old style humor that this movie is filled to the brim with. Pop some popcorn and just enjoy a classic.

I like the whole comedy and horror mix to the movie and gene wilder and gilda radner are very funny when they play in a movie together.
