I've loved this movie since I was little. Now my son enjoys it too! It's full of lots of different animals, and you learn about the culture of the real life tribes in Africa. It's a movie the whole family can enjoy and learn from. I like the fact that it has a little bit of everything...from fun, comedy, romance, and action. A must have for your DVD collection!!!

  Animal Fun in Africa~ John Wayne~ GEM~
Review created: 05/06/08(updated 05/09/08)

Hatari is swahili for DANGER~
John Wayne has a group of Professional Game Hunters (Animal Wranglers) who help capture animals for Zoos. The fun is the way they do it~ John Wayne as the MOODY "boss" ADD Red Buttons who has many fun schemes that work but not always well to creatively capture animals along with Hardy Kruger and the LOVELY ELSA MARTINELLI. As the photographer who NO one wants there but ends up STAYING against their wishes to do an article on the group~ she is smart and funny and makes the GRUMPY Wayne see what a beauty she is~ ADD the great theme by Henry Mancini "Baby Elephant Walk"~ The fun part is where a HERD of baby orphaned elephants chases the girl down (Elsa) all over the town~ very cute and funny~

silly no real plot~ WE love Wayne~ he never disappoints~ fun comedy relief from Red Buttons and Elsa who we have not seen much since is the girl that "captures" HER man~

I GIVE IT A SOLID 7 OUT OF 10 FOR ADVENTURE AND GREAT FUN~

IF YOU FOUND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE~

A rather different role for the "Duke", John Wayne but he pulls it off well playing a big game hunter in Africa. Film ia well done while on location in Africa. I give it 4 1/2 stars.

This is a great John Wayne movie, set in Africa the scenery is awesome and so is the action. If you like John Wayne and are looking for something a little different then this movie is for you.
The movie is about a group of rugged men living in Africa catching animals for zoos in the states. The chase scenes are real, the stunts are done by the actors themselves and photography is great. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a break in the traditional John Wayne western genre.

Not "classic" John Wayne (a shoot 'em up Western), but a classic that we love. Have probably watched it 20 times and we never tire of it.

Have loved the movie and score since I was a kid.

The Mancini score has some of the most dramatic and beautiful music I've enjoyed in any movie. Some schmoozy jazz numbers are great, but I particularly enjoy the Theme and Sounds of Hatari numbers. But the real attraction comes from the beauty of the African scenery and the delightful, if totally predictable romances that make such fare so watchable. Throw in the fact that it's a John Wayne non-western and the Red Buttons humor, and it's a movie worth spending time on.

I've always enjoyed "The Duke's" movies. This is one of my favorites, and believe it or not, one that my parents (also fans of "The Duke") had not yet seen. So I actually purchased 2 separate copies, 1 for myself, and the other was an anniversary gift for my parents. They very much enjoyed the movie as much as I do. And now that I have my own copy, I can watch it whenever I want.
It's really a great movie.

I paid for this item on 5/30/07 with the DVD Big Jake. I receivecd an e-mail from the seller that both were shipped 6/1/07. I requested info on tracking when I didn't receive in 5 days. They finally responded w/ a new ship date & I did receive this one in a reasonable time. I don't think the buyer should have to request the items to be shipped. I paid right after I won the auction, but have yet to receive all the items. Probably won't buy from this seller again.

This is great John Wayne film. It features wonderful action of the capture of wild african animals for exhibit in zoos. The danger of trying to capture a Rhino. Good chance to see the DUKE in a roll which is not war or cowboy related.
Animal lovers may not like do to underlying theme.

I BOUGHT HATARI FOR ME AND MY SON. WE ARE BOTH JOHN WAYNE FANS. IT WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND SHIPPED WONDERFULLY. I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH THIS SELECTION. UNLIKE THE JUNGLE BOOK I BOUGHT ON JULY 7,2006 THAT I NEVER RECEIVED BUT THE SELLER CASHED MY CHECK AND GOT AWAY WITH ROBBING ME. SO BUT I WILL NEVER BUY AGAIN FROM EBAY. BECAUSE I WAS LET DOWN BY EBAY AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM.

  Hatari!
Review created: 09/08/06

John Wayne is collecting animals in Africa for Zoos in the USA. The scenic beauty of the areas, the animals in their native habitat alone make it a film worth seeing. But there's a story and a love interest that works out exceedingly well.
A young woman joins the group and find some baby elephants to care for, and soon she has several. The elephants follow her everywhere and are some of the best comedians you ever saw.
When the woman falls in love with John Wayne and he rebuffs her, she can't leave the country because these little elephants follow her everywhere and John rescues her from escaping and professes his love after all.
It's a blockbuster movie with everything going for it.
To me, it's a "must see."

  Hatari - John Wayne
Review created: 07/07/06
by:

I am a John Wayne fan and really like his movies those especially when directed by John Ford and are western's. Hatari wasn't one of John Wayne's better movies as I thought the script was weak with to much smoking, drinking, and swearing which I am not fond of. I like him in the western movies best and I am trying to collect as many of the good one's as I can. But Hatari does show some very exciting scenes and some beautiful scenery as well of Africa. He also had some pretty good support actors.

Home, Home on the Veldt: Hatari
Review created: 05/05/07
by: George_Chabot-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Thrilling chase scenes, buffalo, rhino, leopards, ostriches, monkeys - good for whole family

Cons:
Not much story other than that

Hatari (1962) Hatari means "danger" in Swahili. film tagline In addition to playing all sorts of cowboys, veteran actor John Wayne played a large variety of roles that may surprise you. Did you know he played a hard-boiled detective? A boxer? A gold miner? An oil roughneck? Of course he played many soldiers and sailors, but Genghis Khan? Try this one on for size - a guy who catches African animals for zoos? Yep, John Wayne played all those roles, and even a few other types. Hatari is a movie about Africa, the last frontier, and the people who risked their lives to bring wild animals back for..

  John Wayne goes to Africa
Review created: 12/09/01
by: Stephen_Murray-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
African animals, sometimes amusing, sometimes very dangerous

Cons:
n counterweight for John Wayne as the aging alpha male

Hatari! (Swahili for danger ) was probably the first Howard Hawks film that I saw. At age twelve I didn t know what a Howard Hawks film was. Now it seems very much one, that is, one of the collections of portraits of males who routinely face danger, are good at what they do, and mingle with a few women who can banter with them and who understand the men s inability to speak of love and willingness to give them up if a friend want them more. Screenwriter Leigh Brackett was female and wrote most of Hawks s Westerns (not Red River, my favorite, though) and coauthored The Big Sleep scenario (with.

by: pyfr -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
John Wayne, the romanticism of Africa. Very light and humorous at times.

Cons:
The rocket part was kinda dumb. The ending went on a bit too long.

John Wayne, sigh. I don't know what to do with him. Part of me really wants to like him, but something inside me is in rebellion against the things that were crammed down my throat as a child. Like country music and Spaghetti-O's. It seemed that every time a cowboy hat popped up on the television screen back in the 1970's, whose squinty-eyed visage appeared beneath it? If you were about to say "John Cleese" or "Gene Simmons", you're only half right. I've expressed my preference for Clint over John and complained about American Westerns before. With few exceptions, I'm not fond of ol' Marion...

Hatari! shows Howard Hawk's "Hawksian" style at its best!
Review created: 03/20/07
by: jarjess -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Visually stimulating, great characters, great acting

Cons:
A tad bit long.

Howard Hawks Hatari! (Howard Hawks, USA 1962) was among the last of his works as a film director. Released in 1962, Hatari! is an excellent example of a standard Howard hawks comedy-adventure. Set in the African jungles, Shawn (John Wayne) and his group of comrades go an daily adventures to catch wild animals to sell to a Swiss zoo. The film runs over two and a half hours and includes amazing chase sequences as well as reoccurring banter between the sexes. Hatari! is an excellent example of Hawks Hawksian style of film making with the use of themes, plot devices and his signature invisible...

An unusual Wayne flick you must see
Review created: 01/21/00
by: hestand -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great family entertainment

Cons:
No violence, no sex, no cons

"Hatari" is not the run of the mill Wayne picture, but he still manages to come up smelling like a rose. He's still the boss and as big as a mountain, and gives us a good performance. Wayne tames African Wildlife in this one and with the help of the animals this movie is very entertaining. Nice to see Red Buttons again, doing a fine acting job as usual. If you like lots of action and good wildlife scenes you will enjoy this movie. One thing that captures your attention and awe in this one is the way the big game hunters go about capturing the animals live for the zoos. No easy feat. No...
