It is a clean movie, about issues that exist still today. It is a great film... Hollywood should make more like this.

  HART'S WAR
Review created: 01/11/08

Upon first watching this movie, I thought it to be quite dull. The fighting was typical and uninspiring. However, as I watched, this movie had such a powerful and non-stereotypical message, that I began to follow each scene while wondering what was coming up next? The murder of the Black Army Lieutenant seemed so brutal and shocking, that I fell for the passion and emotion of the scene rather than a way to steer me away from the underlying truth of the moment. The court trial and the control of their commander (the Colonel played by Bruce Willis) was very mean and uncaring. I even wanted to set him on his can, after the way he talked to the young Lieutenant (Colin Farrell) during the second day of the trial.

As the real message and drama finally lets you in, you will become inspired beyond belief. You will be gripped by the quandary as to which side you will be loyal to (even among your fellow POW's)? Which role will you now portray, so your role will be believable and essential to help the subterfuge succeed? Will you help with the "tunnel" and keep certain secrets, or will you sacrifice your life to save another's?!? Will you really understand the plan and what role you must now play? Wouldn't you have shot the German Commander after quietly reassembling his pistol and no guards to stop you?? It would have been so easy, right? Would you come back after successfully escaping the POW camp??? hmmmmm...

If you have ever been a soldier, and if you have ever taken your role truly seriously, you understand words like "HONOR" "PATRIOTISM" "LOYALTY" and "LOVE" (yes LOVE) for our country. These words are said many times in each of our lives, for one reason or another, but as you watch this movie to its conclusion you cannot help but to believe these words capturing your complete attention and wish to live each of these words....and so much more. You cannot help but to find your eyes well-up as you remember your loved ones, even in war-torn countries, even today, and while praying for their safety and safe return to your loving arms soon. I live the word "HONOR" every day of my life and will always feel the "DIGNITY" and the "PRIDE" in my country and its people every day of my life. My wife is the same way, and these are distinct reasons we married each other.

Wow, this movie was powerful in many ways! It shows the persistence, drive and determination, as POW's worked on plans to escape. Traitors were disgusting, vile, and given the justice they deserved, but there was still someone who wanted to defend their right to trial...even back then. So many twists and turns in this movie made it a very good movie that will find its way into my DVD movie collection.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. And to those who serve, may God lead and protect you, every minute you are away from your families and loved ones!!

Hart's War: Strange justice, strange honor
Review created: 09/02/02
by: telynor-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Has a grim, gritty look that's appropriate.

Cons:
Has a kitchen sink feel to it - namely, it tries to cover everything.

Browsing over the recent selections, I chose this one on a whim. I wish now that I hadn't. Despite the novel by John Katzenbach of the same name, this is a dismal, depressing and jingoistic wannabe WWII film. Taking a tried and true formula - WWII and the idealistic young man in a POW camp - this is a moralizing, racist view of the war. True, the sets, tone, and atmosphere of the film are correct and give the film a gritty look, it's the lack of depth and too many elements tossed in for gratuitous effect that ultimately ruins the story. Center to the tale is a young lieutenant, Thomas Hart ...

Pros:
Iures, Farrell, Willis, Hauser and Howard. Attention to detail, and story

Cons:
poorly edited, humorless, pacing

At this point I don t much mind that no one agrees with my assessment of this movie. And I will not apologize for liking it. But I can say I feel very bad that the values represented in this film are lost upon a new generation of movie goers. Because it means that we failed to transmit them. Why is it, I wonder that a movie that has a hero (or three heroes) is automatically rejected in such a way? This movie is in many ways a tribute to the generation praised in Tom Brokaw s book, The Greatest Generation. It is based on a novel by John Katzenback, which in turn has much of its grounding in...

  Harts War:Slow and dark,yet satisfying
Review created: 04/22/05
by: smarterthan3 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good ending,Farrell, most of the other actors

Cons:
Willis has done better, slow pacing takes the viewer out of the movie at times

One look at the cover of Hart's War and one might assume it to be just another WWII movie about a group of American soldiers captured by the Nazi's and sent to a POW camp. And,in a nutshell, that is what you have in this movie. But at the same time, the cover, the whole advertising approach the movie took upon its release, the viewer will most likely be also expecting lots of gunplay and plenty of action and suspense to keep them glued to there seat, and to have a good sense of honor supposing one of the main heroic characters dies giving up his life for another. Well, going into this movie don't.

Hart s War should be sent to the firing squad

Pros:
A great start, effective POW recreation.

Cons:
The acting, goes downhill after first 20 minutes. Not much action to keep the momentum.

A great, promising screenwriter once declared the only things that matter are the beginning and the very last scene. Everything in between is just coming down, or leading up from those two things. I argued with him for a good hour, saying, okay then, if I wrote a terrific introduction and a terrific denouement, then that s all I need? Nothing else? It could be f king boring for the whole other hour, hour and a half? His contention was yes and his main example was Jacob s Ladder, a film he proclaimed as a chaotic mess, yet still holds your attention and leaves you talking afterwards simply...

War of Hearts... Hart's War isn't his
Review created: 06/06/02
by: lamiable -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good acting, excellent atmosphere, for those wanting a break from action.

Cons:
Misleading marketing campaign, this is NOT an action movie. A rather thin plot.

I chose to see this movie only months after the stupid marketing campaign that lured all to think it's an ACTION movie, when it's a relatively calm (not slow) paced drama after all. I would advise you to do the same, and rent this movie for a calm and 'serious' evening with your friends. Sex/Nudity: No Violence: War violence, no gore. Pretty calm film, though. Action: No. Don't expect to see much action. It's a film about human dramas, not human stupidity. When it exists, it's well done. Date film: Would you REALLY want to invite your date to a WAR film?? Drama: Excellent Suspense: Good PLOT:.
