I loved this movie in college, and had to buy it to share with my family. Still enjoyable! Eddie Murphy, Della Reese, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Arsenio Hall, Jasmine Guy make the movie.
Part of what I loved are the unusual and sometimes shocking lines. Be ready for strong language that works in this gangster movie.

Harlem Nights is one big disappointment

Pros:
Costumes are fun to look at, Eddie Murphy works hard.

Cons:
Humor didn't really work, and the gangster image was too light for me.

I'm as guilty of type casting actors and actresses as most of the general public. There are certain people who I associate with humor and expect to laugh when I see them. Movies like Jim Carrey's 23 or Tom Hanks' Road to Perdition nearly always suprise me...I sit around waiting for a punchline that never comes. Harlem Nights is one of those movies for me now and that's a shame. Who's in it? Harlem Nights features four stars that I associate with some of the funniest comedy ever, both stand up and situational. They are: Redd Foxx Eddie Murphy Charlie Murphy Richard Pryor In addition to these,..

Pros:
funny, entertaining, cast, set design, costumes

Cons:
slow in some spots, some implausibilities

Upon it's release in 1989, Harlem Nights met with resounding criticism. Nary a critic could be found that had anything positive to say about the film. "It's vulgar"..."It's a misogynistic mess"...."It's charmless and unoriginal"...they cried. And they were mostly right. Yet despite these things, I still found Harlem Nights to be an enjoyable and, at times, very funny film. And judging from the films box office take ($96 million worldwide) many of you did too. Featuring a good blend of comedy and drama, if you can stomach the "colorful phrases" that are used in abundance, I think you might...

Pros:
Beautiful Period Piece.

Cons:
-

Harlem Nights is an exquisite film and one of the better motion pictures starring Eddie Murphy, whose pet project this film was--as writer, director, and star. Murphy brings together an astounding array of talent, from Della Reese to the late and great Richard Pryor and Red Foxx to depict the story of a Harlem nightclub owner named Sugar(Richard Pryor) and his adopted son and protege, Quick, played by Eddie Murphy. This film brought together some amazing talents in a way that definitely won't be seen again. The crux of this film is the hassle that is being played on Sugar and Quick by the...

BLACK MOBSTERS ARE BETTER THAN ITALIAN MOBSTERS - IN THIS FILM, AT LEAST
Review created: 09/06/03
by: brotherthor -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Eddie Murphy, Red Foxx, Richard Pryor, Della Reese

Cons:
Death shouldn't be this funny - but with Eddie Murphy directing this film, it is.

Eddie Murphy seems to have captured the spirit of Harlem during the era of the speak easies and gin joints. Great orchestra numbers and dance scenes. Prohibition opened up a lot of enterprise for enterprising criminals in the 1930's. The Italian mobsters don't want to share the booty(double entendre) with the Black gangsters in Harlem. Della Reese and Red Foxx argue non-stop as an older couple who are in cahoots with Richard Pryor. The "f" word is used frequently by many of the actors, but somehow it is funny because everyone is using it. The humor is silly and effective but not as...
