  Solid PDA, poor accessories

I purchased this PDA primarily for use as a mobile contact and appointment manager (to be sync'd up with Outlook 2003 at work). I was also hoping to enjoy some of the side benefits such as mobile media (MP3, photos, video) and wireless (802.11b). Although it worked great for it's primary purpose, I found it rather disappointing in the "extras" category. I'm not sure if this is the fault of HP or just the current state of technology and Windows Mobile 2003.

If you're in the market for a true hand-held multimedia device, you should first consider the limitations of hardware and technology. For instance, if you've got a TiVo and want to use TiVo ToGo to transfer a 1-hour show to the device, it could take more than an hour just to transfer that 1Gig mpeg to the memory card over a USB connection. Plus you might be surprised to find (as I was) that the clip won't even play on the video software installed on the IPAQ. If you want to try it, be sure to pick a short clip (less than 5 minutes) so you don't waste your time.

My experience with the WiFi capabilities was disappointing as well. I usually found that I could access the network for a few seconds and then it would fail. It would have been nice if HP had provided software to diagnose the WiFi signal and configuration. If you're planning on WiFi at home or around the house, save yourself the hassle and use a BlueTooth Class A connection instead. It's much more reliable and easier to debug.

One sad final note: buy a better protective case than the one provided. My IPAQ happened to slip out of my pocket one day and landed on the exposed top corner. Although the unit still works, something seems to have busted in the memory card slot and the memory card no longer locks into place (which I later found out when I realized that I'd lost my memory card).

In summary, I would probably buy an IPAQ again. (In fact I'll probably try to buy one for parts and repair my busted memory slot.) I think many of the shortcomings I've encountered are due to Windows Mobile and not necessarily the HP unit itself.

You have two types of people that purchase these types of devices and you have to decide what person you are. 1) The person who needs/wants help with many details so you leave the PDA to handle that problem. You aren't interested in how stuff works, just as long as it works. You may not even be aware of all the things this device can do, but as long as it does the basics, then you are ok with that. 2) You are truly interested in technology. You like to take things apart and put them back together. You know every possible way to get the most out of every penny you spend on electronics and you expect your devices to keep up with you and not the other way around like person #1. I was person #1 and over a period of time, I decided to educate myself and slowly move over to becoming more like person #2.

If you are person #1, than this device if for you. You can’t go wrong. Tasks, email, contacts, calendar, music library and all the other things that Windows mobile offers are available with this device and at a reasonable price. No reason to ever spend $500 or more for a device that will only perform the same tasks as a device for less than half. You don’t need to know about TiVo downloads and 802.11b and 802.11g are two apartments within the same building. You may have to upgrade to take pictures, but if you have this device, than you will probably already have a mobile phone that can take pictures. I installed exercise and nutrition software on it and they worked great. Result, 5 stars for Person #1

If you are person #2, then you will be disappointed. This PDA will not be a device that will tickle your fancy…as a matter of fact, as mentioned in previous reviews; this device might actually make you angry. Nevo worked perfectly. I could control TV’s, VCR, DVD, Satellite in one room, and then do the same thing in another room and add my stereo to the list of devices all with the touch of a button. I had a heck of a time logging on to the internet with WEP enabled and I still couldn’t transfer files via Bluetooth from my laptop. Maybe it’s just me. Some of the features you hear people talking about with newer devices makes you question if you should have just paid more money and got the latest bells and whistles. Yes, Techno Envy is alive and well. Many of the games I’ve purchased over the years performed better on older but faster Ipaqs. It’s almost like this device is stuck in the middle between better performing devices using Windows Mobile prior to 2003 and devices using Windows Mobile after 2003. The many older versions are faster and the newer models just had more things you could do with greater capacity to do them. For Person #2, I’d give it 2 stars.

Once you figure out which of these two people is more like you, then you will be able to make a more informed decision. Hope this helps.

  Still Problems
Review created: 06/11/08

The product was shipped quickly, however it has been 6 weeks and I have not been able to get the IPAQ's Internet explorer to work, so no email, no web. everything else works, but I wanted for my wife so she could get online. So very disappointed. I even had some computer geeks look at it but to no avail.

  GET AN iPHONE FOR FREE!!!
Review created: 02/26/08
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Get one for FREE!!! Have a look at this video first:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFKYVE__Mug

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). The best offer to do is STAMPS.com. Its free, all you need to do is register and follow the instructions. And you’re on your way to your free prize for just completing this offer!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free PS3, flat screen TV, iPHONE, ipod or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 4 week free trial and it is free! I don’t have to do anything with it). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 5-14 people or friends (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay or any other message board, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your selected item for free. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after your orders placed.

Step 1: http://www.YourFreeiPhone.com/index.php?ref=4687874

Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and best).

Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (like Blockbuster or Stamps.com) and refer up to 13 people to do the same (use eBay! Do what I did, copy my ad).

Step 4: Receive your IPHONE, FLAT SCREEN TV, IPOD, PS3, or CASH for FREE!!!!!!!!!! (Even The Shipping Is Free!!!)

For proof that this is for real, click on the link below. It's the company that is behind everything.

http://www.trainn.org/reviews.php

Please take advantage of this offer!!!

Please Check It out NOW, I did!

Check my feedback, this is for real - I chose the cash and i JUST got it yesterday!!!Now I'm going for an IPHONE! You can get free stuff too!

When I bought it I was looking for an electronic an portable agend, so the graphics are really bad,
I had have more expectations about it, So it works great, I'd recomend you if you don't need to take pictures, or carry a lot of information, pictures and video resolution are really poor, The windows mobile version not support all games, and have big problems with some programs and games like sudoku they turn completely inestable your pocket.

I like it because it's a great all around media device that can function pretty closely to a laptop. It's size makes it easy for me to use when I'm warming up with the football team and it's look makes it profesional looking when I'm using it at work or in a meeting.

I have had an HP iPAQ for about 2 years and my wife had a Palm for about the same time. One day her Palm just stopped working. So I let her borrow mine and she had it figured out by herself in no time. I use mine for business and I got hers for a Christmas present. She uses hers to keep our families schedule, share pictures and listen to music. I knew going into the purchase what to expect from the product. I would recommend an iPAQ to anyone looking to get organized, share photos, listen to music, have mobile email and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth. Awesome product!!!

I was ripped off by the seller who intentionally sells broken items so beware of popular electronic devices being purchased on EBAY, if its too good to be true it is not and don't expect EBAY to police itself, it makes money off of every bogus item listed and sold

  great versatile device
Review created: 09/19/06

I love this device. I have added a 1gb memory card to the unit and I have about 40 ebooks, lots of mp3, have found some decent video software. I got it instead of a laptop for grad school and also got a think outside bluetooth keyboard which really turns it into a little laptop. I have even found software to view powerpoint presentations (which is great for grad school). I live by this device. It keeps me on schedule, wakes me in the morning and I listen to internet radio at night before bed. I have had 2 different palm devices which were nice but having wireless internet and bluetooth is the way to go. I did get a larger battery which really helps make it last thru the day. Using the Nevo universal remote I can control every tv and stereo in my house. The case leaves something to be desired but there are plenty of great cases on the market. I can't say enough about this device.

Great Starter Device, Wish I had more features
Review created: 08/14/06

This is my first PDA, well second but the palm I bought 6 years ago and promptly lost doesnt count. I decided to buy the 3115 becuase it had both WIFI and Bluetooth. I wanted the WIFI to connect to the internet and the Bluetooth for connection to a GPS reciever. I realize that there are newer more expensive models out there with these features but I decided to try to be frugal with this purchase. Well, I honestly think I should have spent a little more and gotten a newer/more capable model. I love the Pocket PC Operating System (better than the Palm OS) and I love the internet conectivity but it is a little slow and I havent had a chance to test the Bluetooth, thats next. What it really comes down to is wanting a few more features (like a camera) and a little more speed. I guess I havent tapped into the multimedia features yet so i cant speak for that but I use the HP for notes, contacts, appointments, and internet (when i can find a hot spot). Overall I love the thing, it allows me to keep track of my life and also those fleeting thoughts that I would otherwise forget. It wasnt until I used a co-worker's Trio 700 that I wished I would have bought the latest and greatest. That way I could reduce the load my messenger bag has to carry, if only by a few ounces.

I have had 2 of the same in the past, which I lost, and found that this devise is the most efficient tool I have come across. It is user friendly, and it does everything I need it to do. But most important is the fact that it is the most reliable tool, in my experience of course, that I have had. It never lets me down, even though this is the 3rd one, but only because I have lost the previous 2.

Awesome pocket PC! WiFi is reliable and so useful!!
Review created: 05/08/06
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The best part about this pocket PC is that you can use all your windows programs on it.. there is a scaled down version of Microsoft Word, Outlook Express, Excel, etc..

I can also use it to control my TV with the Universal Remote Nevo feature.

I like how it can play MP3's, Wav files, has a headphone jack, that you can record short voice memos.. it's especially useful with the bluetooth keyboard.. it's like bringing a mini laptop to class. I love being able to take notes in class with it and it takes up almost no room in my backpack!

Having windows based programs means I can just use Excel and Word etc, without having to convert anything like with palm.

The battery is great, 9 hours of battery life (a bit less when watching a movie or playing games), but it re-charges quickly as well.

AWESOME handheld, would recommend to anyone!
