Sensational DVD! This is a classic DVD of a great movie musical. How can you beat the singing of Frank Sinatra along with the singing debut of one of Hollywood’s greatest actors Mr. Marlon Brando? The musical score by Frank Loesser is fantastic! This DVD is a chance to escape to an earlier era and leave all the headaches of 2008 behind. If you’re a fan of music you will love this DVD.

It is a classic musical featuring true heavyweights in their youth/prime - Sinatra and Brando. With a deep, excellent cast it was fun to watch an old favorite for the first time in a long time. The sound and color was great and we enjoyed a revisit of days gone by.

This has to be my favorite movie! The only thing I can say I was dissapointed about was that the 'Bushel and Peck' song was replaced. Still an awesome movie though. Jean Simmons and Marlon Brando and Vivian Blaine and Frank Sinatra all do an amazing job, great chemistry awesome singing as well! This is a must see movie!

I purchased this movie because I love the play so much and hadn't seen it in a long time. If you're buying it for that reason; be aware that one song is missing (Bushel and a Peck) and a couple of others are added. It isn't a true interpretation of the play, but, it's a very fun movie.

I love the story line of Guys and Dolls. It is about a "good missionary" who wants to change the world, but she meets her match in a sauve gangster played by Marlin Brando. The music is well known containing "Luck Be a Lady". It is a must see for everyone!

Guys & Dolls 1955 - Luck Be A Lady Tonight
Review created: 07/29/04
by: susidee34 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
singin & dancin

Cons:
Vivian Blaine's voice - speaking and singing

What a great celebration of sound in this great old movie starring Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and good old Stubby Kaye. Based on the dealings of roaming and mostly unsuccessful gambler, Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra), he makes a deal with his nemesis Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) to bed a certain young lady. This lady, prim and proper Salvation Army Sergeant Sarah Brown, played by Jean Simmons, is hardly one miss that Masterson will be able to fool with his sweet nothings. Throughout the movie are a slew of great songs, including Guys

Guys and Dolls - Sinatra Sings, Brando Swings, And Damon Runyon Spins in Perpetuity
Review created: 02/14/07
by: rkingfish-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Sinatra sings, though not often enough. Great unintentional period detail, in retrospect.

Cons:
The sum of the parts do not equal a whole.

According to a recent PBS American Masters documentary that covered the life and times of Schmuel Gelbfisz - aka - Samuel Goldfish - aka - Samuel Goldwyn, the film producer was as much a product of self-invention as any unlikely Hollywood success story. Legendary for his bulldog tenacity and nonsensical turns-of-phrase, his belief in making one picture at a time, and making it well put him in the upper-echelon among the pioneering moguls of the industry. Films such as the 1946 Best Picture winner The Best Years of our Lives and Ball of Fire had that celebrated Goldwyn Touch that made each a...

  Guys and Dolls (1955)
Review created: 05/27/02
by: BrianKoller -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
direction, cast, score, sets, costumes

Cons:
exaggerated characters and situations, lengthy, cartoonish

Damon Runyon's short story "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" became the unlikely subject of the biggest new Broadway musical of 1950. It was directed by the legendary George S. Kaufman, and contained memorable songs composed by Frank Loesser. It was inevitable that the play would become an MGM film, although it cost Samuel Goldwyn dearly. He paid a million dollars plus a percentage of the gross for the rights. Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who had won Oscars in consecutive years for All About Eve (1950) and A Letter to Three Wives (1949), was named as the director. With its colorful sets and costumes,..

The guy's only doin' it for some doll
Review created: 11/09/02
by: Kidnykid -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Surprising level of humor

Cons:
May give some the wrong impression of the underworld

GUYS AND DOLLS is the quintessential feel-good movie about gangsters. The premise is that Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) is operating a losing proposition. Hassled by a local precinct cop (Robert Keith), unable to commit to a wedding date with his fiancee Adelaide (Vivian Blaine, the only original Broadway cast member in the movie) and very nearly broke, Detroit finds himself making a bet with Sky Masterson (a much thinner Marlon Brando). Specifically, Detroit bets that Sky can't take out a member of the local Salvation Army knockoff - a beauty named Sarah (Jean Simmons) - for a date to...

  Adelaide: My Kind Of Doll!
Review created: 04/02/05
by: sadiesguy -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, songs, acting, comedy, set design.

Cons:
A little long (2 hours and 29 minutes).

The DVD for 1955's "Guys And Dolls" is a fantastic movie! Musicals are one my favorite kinds of movies, especially the classics. So I knew when I bought this movie that I was in for a treat! Not only that, but the cost was low. I only paid $9.99 for it, and it was worth every penny! First of all, "Guys And Dolls" is glittering with some of the most famous celebrities of all time. Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine, Marlon Brando, and Jean Simmons light up the screen with heartwarming performances. Now for a brief overview of the plot. The film begins in the busy and wild tourist attraction known as.
