Greatest Hits - John, Elton just what it says always been his best album Elton John was to the 70's what The Beatles were to the 60's. He was the undisputed king of the 70's. This brilliant and timeless collection proves why. You get a huge chunk of Elton's first batch of hits from the early to mid 70's. You get the gorgeous ballads like "Your Song", "Daniel", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", and the overlooked "Border Song". Then there's the uptempo rockers like "Crocodile Rock", "Bennie And The Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and more. Elton showcases his brilliant genius of melodies and chords. Bernie Taupin, as Elton's lyric writer, is one of the best lyricists ever. Some people I've come across say "Crocodile Rock" is silly and weightless. Is that supposed to mean something?. Is that supposed to actually matter?. Of course not. It's catchy, bouncy, fun, and has fun lyrics. You don't need more than that. It's no surprise that this collection is one of the top 10 highest selling albums of all time. It should be. Greatest Hits 2 and 3 are also top choices to check out. Elton John is, and always will be, the true king of pop.
Great CD if you are some one who loves the old hits by Elton John---this is just the perfect CD for you. Great sound, great songs and we really enjoy listening to these ol hits while driving.
I love key songs from Elton John, and this CD really had it all. There were even some that I wasn't expecting. Believe me, when I need a quick Elton fix, I just pop this in and jam out to "Rocketman" or "Bennie and the Jets". Highly recommended buy!
I purchased the elton john cd because I wanted to get some great music for my ipod. I really like elton john. My favorite song on this cd was Bennie and the Jetts. My least favorite song on this Cd was Good By Yellow Brick Road. My other favorite song was Daniel.
Way back, before Sir Elton John became boring, he had some really good hits. More volumes of his Greatest Hits were put together after this one, but this is the one that rocks.

Pros: Every song is a winner...
Cons: ...and nothing is dated or missing. A classic must-purchase.
I behaved the entire time I went with my father on his sales call. Caught too late to arrange a babysitter and with my mother occupied at night school, my salesman father was going to have drag his nine year old on a sales call one evening. If you behave, he said, I ll buy you a present. I do not remember much of the sales call. The prospects he met that night were nice enough to let me watch television in their bedroom. Imagine, they had a second television in their bedroom. I sat on the floor, unwilling to mess their bed. Driving home, my father stopped at a five and dime. I m very proud...

The Sun Won't Be Going Down on Elton for a Long Time

Pros: terrific songs spanning Elton's early career
Cons: many great songs not included
I haven t always been a huge Elton John fan, but I started to develop an appreciation for his music around the time The Lion King came out. We had several of his records, and I no doubt had listened to them at some point, but it was really Disney that turned me on to Elton John. Well, and my brother Benjamin. He was, at one point, just as obsessed with Elton John as I am with Simon and Garfunkel though he ll deny it heartily now - so we listened to a lot of Elton around out house. This albums contains most of my favorite songs of his, other than those from The Lion King, of course. Your Song .

The Songs You Will Remember.

Pros: Great Hits
Cons: NONE
I grew up in the 70's and remember the chart topping years of Elton John. The songs on this Greatest Hits albums bring back those wonderful, carefree years of the 70's. The one thing that seems to be a constant on this album is that Elton John and long time friend and writer, Bernie Taupin wrote each and every one. The first song on this CD is Your Song. This song has wonderful lyrics and a great melody. It is a slower song telling you that this is his gift to you. Your Song brings back my memories of my carefree teenage years. As always Elton's piano playing and Taupin's lyrics are a hit....

The Songs that Made Him a Superstar
Review created: 08/25/00

Pros: Has all of his top-20 hits from 1970 to Summer 1974
Cons: Omits several early-'70s hits, like "Friends" and "Tiny Dancer"
The Songs that Made Him a Superstar This summer marks the 30th anniversary of Elton John's first chart appearance, with "Border Song." When I was a kid, I thought a "border song" was a hit that was released too late in the year to make the top 100 of that year--and too early to make the following year's top 100. Elton's first major hit was with "Your Song," a sincere recording in the singer-songwriter mold of the '70s (i.e. James Taylor, Carole King). This was my personal favorite, and it was strong on both melody and lyrics. His second top 10 hit came in the summer of 1972, with "Rocket Man..

Exception to the Rule
Review created: 08/29/01

Pros: Very strong set of Elton's best material
Cons: Can't believe they left off "Tiny Dancer" & "Levon" (though they weren't HUGE hits).<BR/>
Exception to what rule, you ask? My rule that Greatest Hits albums are unnecessary (and even demeaning) for great musicians. Making such a compilation for artists like Led Zeppelin or the Pixies is a rock'n'roll sacrilege. And even Elton's early albums were fairly consistant, sometimes conceptual. But he lends himself to compilation extremely well, and these songs are just as effective here as in their original settings. Perhaps they are just that good - but they almost seem to belong together. It's also in part thanks to his never relying on formula, so unlike some band's hit albums it never.
